  • Mobile Survival is finally happening! Welcome to a new Space Engineers series where we can only build base stuff on our rover. This series is part base building limitation and part race against the sun as we try to get a functioning base up and running while still outpacing the sun on our quest to circumnavigate the Earth! On this first day (episode 1) of our new 2023 mobile survival series, we set off in our small grid rover to cover as much ground as possible!
Our Mission: To go around the entire Earth using our rover base without losing daylight. And to take some scenic photos!
    Rules:
    1) The base must be on a mobile rover, meaning NO stationary base
    2) Flying is allowed, but only for little remote recon drones
    3) Bridges and other static grids to help get around obstacles are allowed
If you like the video, be sure to leave comments and hit that like button! That's how I know to make more of these!

I agree. The start is where the concept truly shines. With economy it got progressively more and more of a regular series. Same with The Center, though maybe to a lesser degree. That's why they've gotta stay miniseries!

for immersion, it's a great idea. But, I think it there would need to be the stipulation to not grind away everything. Perhaps, no grid destruction, but some grinding and looting allowed.

@@MrTehNoms Surviving by salvage is 100% one of the best ways to play SE. Grinding everything down, however, quickly shows it's downsides. You gotta haul all that material around and on a small rover you just don't have the budget to be cargo-hauling, fast, and safe.
Just starting this series, I'm curious as to how Andrew is gonna manage large steel tubes, and later, cobalt/metal grids. In the salvage playstyle you can usually scavenge enough of these components to scrape by.

Working on the rover will be much easier with some piston near the wheels to act like jacks. Perhaps, reduce the friction setting on the wheels or make the rover wider. The grip rolls are the bane of my existence.

the start of a new series
very good video, now for some advice:
for your rover, a smart idea would be to increase the wheelbase (distance between front axle and rear axle); this would increase stability at low and high speed, and prevent you from flipping over forwards as much. in addition, if possible, softening the suspension should lessen the effects of the bumps at speed and allow you to move faster. as it is, your rover is way too compact for any high speed use and is too likely to go end over end or spin out due to its short length and its wide body.

I've circumnavigated all of the planets in SE survival in a custom small grid rover, both around the equator and pole to pole. The earthlike is without a doubt the most difficult with the Alien coming a close second.
A good tip i can provide is build your next rover with an open space between the bottom and any important components. I built my final rover with a bottom made out of heavy armor blocks and blast door edges, then put light armor blocks connecting the bottom with things like storage and the survival kit but i only placed a single connecting light armor block between each functional block and the bottom, this was to make sure if anything got broken if/when i flipped everything else stayed put, however, i kept the attachments as few as possible to make sure when i took any hits to the bottom while driving no damage got transferred up.
Doing it this way you can completely bottom out the rover and destroy armor blocks on the bottom but all of your critical stuff will not take any damage at all.
I even had one specific incident where i dropped a rover from orbit during a survival playthrough but forgot to add canvases to my parachute hatches and slammed into ground hard enough to lose two wheels yet even then none of the critical components took any damage. It wasn't a planned impact test but it's proven the concept to me enough to swear by it.

Just a thought if one of your goals is the remain in the sun a solar panel on the roof would be beneficial. Even if it's flat on the top you'll get nonstop passive charging. And if you haven't disabling the braking on your front wheels will help prevent flipping forward.

It would be kind of funny to have enemy ships spawning, but you're not allowed to have guns, so you would have to run away and maybe hide inside a makeshift cave or something similar. Especially if there was a mod that primarily spawned enemy rovers. Outrunning the enemy and the sun would be interesting to watch. I'm certain there is a mod that modifies their behavior to leave you alone after a set amount of time

that sheer drop you found is known as the world edge. found only because the world generation is done in a rounded cube. the ends of the 4 long section (when opened up in a cross like shape) is what causes it as they dont always meet up due to small variations in the height map

    • @imadethiscomment5663
      @imadethiscomment5663 Год назад

Yup it's 6 flat heightmaps that stitch together like a cube, which the game engine then 'inflates' so to speak to get a spherical planet. Keen did a much better job blending Earthlike stitches than on the Alien planet ;) It's really hard to blend them together in Photoshop so that you end up with no seams.

Frankly, it would serve you better to upgrade your rover instead of trying to go as far as possible at the beginning.
You are only going to lose more and more time because your vehicle is pretty basic and doesn't allow you to drive as fast and as far as you potentially could.
Investing time now into mining and upgrading the rover will ultimately help you reach your destination faster in the long run.
Like, at least get some safety armor around your vehicle (like a rolling cage or something) so that you don't land on your functional blocks the whole time...
