2-Stroke BOG DOWN - Why Metering Levers can cause it - Two-Stroke Carburetor

  • VISUALLY EXPLAINED
In the world of 2-stroke engines and carburetor systems, the term "bog down" refers to a common issue where the engine loses power, hesitates, or stalls during operation. This problem can be frustrating and inconvenient, particularly when using equipment like chainsaws, string trimmers, or outboard motors. One often underestimated factor behind these bogging down issues is the metering lever in the carburetor.
The Crucial Role of the Metering Lever:
The metering lever is a critical component within the carburetor of a 2-stroke engine. Its primary function is to control the flow of fuel from the carburetor's fuel bowl into the engine's intake. The metering lever's position determines the amount of fuel that is mixed with the incoming air, creating the air-fuel mixture that is necessary for combustion and engine performance.
    Metering Lever-Induced Bog Down Issues:
Several factors related to the metering lever can contribute to bogging down problems:
    1. Incorrect Position: The position of the metering lever is crucial for carburetor adjustment. If it is set too high or too low, it can disrupt the balance of air and fuel, causing the engine to bog down. An incorrectly positioned metering lever can result in a too lean or too rich fuel mixture, both of which can lead to performance problems.
    2. Wear and Tear: Over time, the metering lever and the hinge or pivot point can experience wear and tear due to the constant movement and vibration within the carburetor. This wear can affect the metering lever's ability to maintain the desired position, leading to inconsistent fuel metering.
    3. Environmental Factors: Changes in environmental conditions, such as temperature and altitude, can influence the behavior of the metering lever. These variations can impact the air density, affecting the ideal position of the lever for optimal fuel metering. Ignoring these environmental factors can result in bogging down issues.
Diagnosing and Addressing Metering Lever-Related Bog Down:
When a 2-stroke engine experiences bogging down problems, the metering lever is a key element to consider during the diagnostic process. This typically involves:
Visual Inspection: Examining the metering lever for signs of wear, damage, or incorrect positioning.
Lever Adjustment: Ensuring the metering lever is correctly adjusted to maintain the appropriate position for fuel metering.
Environmental Considerations: Accounting for changes in temperature and altitude and adjusting the metering lever as needed.
    The Importance of Proper Maintenance:
Proper maintenance and regular inspection of the metering lever and the overall carburetor system are crucial for preventing bogging down issues. Addressing any metering lever-related problems can help restore correct fuel metering, ensuring the engine operates at its best.
In conclusion, the metering lever, although a seemingly small component, plays a substantial role in the operation of 2-stroke engines. Problems related to this lever can lead to bogging down by disrupting the correct fuel metering, and recognizing its role and ensuring proper maintenance is essential for optimal engine performance.
This principle works for most types of Chainsaw saws, and the following also helps with Chainsaw maintenance. So, whether you are using a Stihl Chainsaw, Husquvarna Chainsaw, basically, all types of Petrol Chainsaw are valid for this principle, as well as many types of or a 2 Stroke Engine. The Electric Chainsaw, of course, escapes this whole principle!
Some of the symptoms for this type of issue can be:
    -the engine will not start,
-engine will start but not run correctly (loss of power, over revving, under revving, uneven running, carburettor will not adjust correctly, and many more)
    -engine will BOG down
    Many thanks indeed

Working on a 96' GSX, and I think the replacement part is bent too far down, preventing the valve from opening around 3k RPM, and causing it to bog heavily and die after 3k RPM, but will go above 3k rpm if the choke is breifly tugged.

two questions or comments. 1: do you ever see a primer bulb in the supply side- meaning all fuel must run thru primer. 2: I removed the screen from my walbro carb as fuel did not flow properly. I found a tiny droplet of water UNDER it -any insight?

great video I'm struggling with a cagiva mito evo 1999 125 2 stroke. she bogs and dies when I pull clutch out in 1st gear even if I ride the clutch at 9000 rpm she bogs down after moving a couple of yards. from your videos I'm assuming maybe low screw is set wrong and restricting fuel so pull away is dead but ive adjusted and tried to ride so many times any ideas would be much appreciated

On those "variable jet types with rotating barrel and needle down into tube, what is the starting screw position and with only one screw, what speed do you adjust it or all three, idle, mid and high and get best for all three?

Hi. My next video should explain a lot about these carbs for you. It’s not ready quite yet as I’m still working in it and it’s detail, but it should be uploaded in about a week or two. It’s quite a large in depth video about them so it’s taking me some time to complete

exellent video thanks for sharing !!!! does the metering diaphram pulse up and down with the pulse of the piston or does it pulse only when throttle is applied ?

I have an issue I hope you can help me with. I have a 2 cycle ice auger that will start but will not idle. I can keep it running with the throttle but when I close the throttle the engine will not idle and will stop. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Hi, thank you for your motivating comment, I really do appreciate it. Now, it sounds to me that your carburettor may need some tuning, that's providing there's no blockage inside and that the components are in good order of course. There could be many causes for your idling issues but generally it's caused by the need for some tuning. I do have a vid on carb tuning as well as there being some other great content on RUclips from others already. I would start with setting the idling screw then go for the full tune up. It wont take long once you have seen one of these vids. I hope helps. Thanks again

Thank you so much for your quick reply.
This carburator is a Tecumseh fixed carb so it has no adjustments. I have replaced every part that can be. The only thing I can think of is possibly the inlet valve lever is either too high or too low. What are your thoughts? Thank you for insight. I really appreciate it.
