How polite it was of the Saxons to stand back and give the vikings plenty of space to climb out from the sewers. Really sporting of them to wait until all of the vikings were up and out to start fighting, too.
you did notice that the civilians were in the way, right?
This is vikings, vikings have to win. In that tv serie is a lot of bullshit, like when they were conquering france, rollo&ragnar, french warriors had bows aimed at rollo 20 metres from him where noone was in their way yet they decided to not to shot untill rollo will come and kille them all :D
yep it was so nice of the Japanese to have their carriers just sit their with little or know escort so the Americans can sink them at midway. Stupid shit like that has happened in battle before. It is only in hindsight that we see what went wrong.
Dude rewatch there was a lot of civilians, and the first things Vikings do was to use Archer to control the Soldiers and force them to not move and just protecting themselves with the shield, damn even a kid would saw that
you fucking idiot in that spot even one man could have killed all climbing Viking it was plain stupid of writers remember petyr belish even one man can act 100 if placed on right position
Father there's a Viking coming up through the sealed sewer, what should we do? Give him some room to ambush us.
You clearly didn't have the mindset of a christian at that time. Besiedes there are civilians there
@@MartinAslaksen that doesnt make sense!?
Well here is the deal notice there's two ladders on the seal two archers come out everyone panics another two come out four archers guarding the seal to let warriors come out cuz by the time they draw there sword archers are firing protecting the seal to let everyone out then hisvker comes out game changer then Ivar game over ambush that's actually a good ambush done well
@@blakeland6528 no, it's stupid. Vikings are confined to narrow space where only 2 or 3 people can come out at a time. Britons have upper ground and more space so in reality, instead of ambushing Britons, they would ambushed easily.
This scene is just for viewers pleasure, no real tactics.
Martin Aslaksen man fuck them civilians
I love how Hvitserk is like a shark. Soon as the blood splashed his face he went full Viking.
Hvitserk shark do do do do do do
Rollo Jr.
In my opinion, Hvitserk's actor tried wayyyyy too hard to try and be like Ragnar. They made it cringey. I think they casted him badly.
@@backyardbiologist6468 way too hard to be ragnar? That will be 100 percent Bjorn.
He’s also on shrooms
Hvitserk has been a clueless clown outside of battle, but once he's in the middle of it its like a different creature.Half crazed walking death machine with zero empathy or care.Just rape, slaughter ,pillage and laugh maniacially while doing it.
The stereotypical viking!
Yeah...people claim that Ivar's a psychopath, but it is in fact Hvitserk who shows absolutely no empathy!
Abhishek Dhar he raped a nun. Definitely a nasty Viking.
Archetype: war
Ragnar Lothbrok DNA
I thought, "Wouldnt that Saxons just stab them in the face as they emerged in twos?", but no, apparently the Saxons just sit and watch them emerge with shocked faces. Makes perfect sense. 👍👌
English sense of sportsmanship before they were even English?
Yeah this scene, though awesome, pretty impractical. Granted, there also were a LOT of the sewer grates, so they took them by surprise and were popping up in various places, but the civilians were standing in the way at first as well
@@MisterAcker Literally all it would've took is one guy to each sewer gate stabbing down; he wouldn't even have to look. He'd have the terrain advantage, not to mention the strength advantage (since stabbing down is far more practical than stabbing up).
@@6ixlxrdHence why I said, it's awesome theatrically, but otherwise impractical. That's what it focuses on is theatrics, as it's a drama. This, 9 times out of 10, would never have worked. Unless they came up at night when there weren't so many soldiers in the streets. If they really wanted to make it realistic in a sense that the Vikings would actually win this scenario, they would have just had it be a night raid when there are less people out and about. More people could come up quietly. Cool scene, but again, impractical
@@MisterAcker That's the thing though: Ivar's entire character has been set up (up until this point, and then the following God-Complex bs) to literally be as practical as possible. In fact, he's one of (if not THE) most practical person on the show, the son who's name will surpass even Ragnar's. They've completely messed up his character, leaving us to only hope they make him good again in the next season.
Hvitserk changed completely in the battle! He looks like a death machine! I really like him!
I loved how frightened athelwulf looked after he got punched in the face by hvitserk and watched him go berserk and chop down 3 soldiers effortlessly
I absolutely love the escort of Ivar, with that music and his "zombie" like walk, it's amazing
Alex Hogh Andersen has undeniable stage presence, and the characteristic walk he does as Ivar is even more impressive once you've seen him in some of his other work...he's actually an even better dancer than he is an actor!
It is safe to say that Ivar got one of his legs injured badly
It is getting rather irritating how useless the Saxons are being portrayed, early on when the vikings were an unknown threat sure you can exaggerate them as idiots, but it's been decades and even when they have the tactical advantage like a bunch of dude climbing up ladders straight into a bottleneck they get defeated.
Totally agree. This was a truly unbelievable scene. King Athelwulf is an experienced, battle-hardened warrior in his own right who has fought both against AND with the vikings. For them to stand there and watch the vikings crawl out of that hole is ridiculous; and if this wasn't a sill TV show - it would be an insult to our intelligence. Ivar is supposed to be a genius, so make him one. This isn't a very good example of that.
i as a viking still enjoy your "english" buttpain :) pls whine some more! then reply to me in my language :)
thought so.. :)
its a shame there are no original eng boys... do a DNA test :))))))
I don't feel a need to know your language; and I'm very German... LOTS of Slavic & Viking blood runs through my veins. That doesn't mean that I feel a need to fight incompetantly-written warriors. The English weren't nearly so weak. Which religion won in the end? If you wish to consider calling the creators of this show out for one amatuerish scene as 'whiney' - I'm guessing you're someone who can't handle to take criticism, yourself. This part of this scene was below this show's writing standards.
I'm Scottish not English, weeabo boy. Also best to troll in a language you're fluent in because no one is going to switch for you. :)))))
Ok, so a bunch of guys climb out of a manhole right between the Saxon army being surrounded from both sides, who thought that was a good idea?
Alex Joseph Ivar wants to spread fear among the christians. More civilians in broad daylight
@alex joseph I think the bishop would have sent his men to the sewers before he let his guard down and celebrated. He noticed that the rats were above ground which means something is disturbing their natural habitat. That being said the rest of this scene is unrealistic for sure.
The lazy writers.
D&D new player
Ivar has quickly become one of my favourite characters
I have always hated him, even more with the newer seasons.
@@1yoan3 No one ask for your opinion
@@1yoan3
If an actor made you hate his character, that is a sign he is an amazing actor!
Btw, I would recommend you watch the BTS, Alex Andersen (Ivar) pulls so many pranks on people lol
@@moshco23 Yes, I've watched a couple, Alex Andersen is an amazing actor, he truly made me hate Ivar. He's very funny BTS.
i loved ivar once i understood him... even knew his mental disorder its called reactive attachment disorder..starts as a child then evolves into psychopathic like traits...he did things i don't condone but i understood why he would... anger, the fact he was expected to triple prove himself due to his disability... but he also had other sides to him..he just wanted to be loved or feared and remembered.. "The child who is unloved by the village will burn it down just to feel its warmth."
Hvitserk is a damn berserker. He represents Ragnar's rage
That's not rage, it's passion.
Ragnar didn’t rage on the battlefield tho he was calm but when he was mad oh shit dude was crazy
Viking next to Ivar at 2:40 will die very bravely yet very quickly, holding his axe that way..
I just realized 😂
LOL))
When you skipped the games tutorial
2:39 that badass moment Heahmund sees Ivar and is like, "crap, him again."
i love how ivar can barely walk but that doesnt stop him from trowing shit across the battlefield and sniping a few dudes xD
So... they were able to climb up unopposed and start shooting arrows?
There also were a lot of women and children mixed in there.
Hollywood sure makes it seem that way but then again look at what they did to the film Braveheart, they butchered it.
God not how the element of surprise works
@Aymane R yeah they were shocked of the stupidity and cry in joyment , then they start stabbing everyone one by one.
Yea this was super unrealistic
Hvitserk vs Aethewold was the first and only time that any of ragnars sons actually directly fought him
I think the writer needs to learn about combat tactics, sewer gates are extremely easy to defend against, whomever goes up will be immediately surrounded and killed and the rest wont be able to get up without suffering from blows everywhich direction. I would have been impressed if they waited until midnight and kill all the sleeping saxons. That actually would have worked. See, im making shit up on the spot that's better than this show's writing. Just disappointing...
Yeah, but there are no awesome fighting scenes, so..
Yeah I would rather have them retake the towers, The towers and the walls surrounding york, that would have been shooting fish in a barrel. Totally more viable then letting in and coming onto them two men at a time, that stuff would never work in the real world, you surrounded by enemies around all sides ,you cant defend all side simply with 2 men, unless these men were high on a very powerfull narcotic the saxons would have immediately noticed and started killing them two men a time.If your argument is that they would have taken a foothold by then ,that is comepltely stupid,no matter what ,there is no way you can hold any ground coming out a small tunnel ,2 men at a time ,when people can clearly notice that you have to open the damm sewer cover ( id ont know what they are called )
I laughed my ass off when I saw that scene, totally defensible!
dandini0698 Yeah man you would write it better. You‘re the real Steven Spielberg:)
sometimes, its better to ignore plot holes in order to enjoy an otherwise great series. ignorance is bliss
I really love Hvitserk on the battlefield, his scream at the end is amazing!
He was a berserker shock trooper. He and ubbe both would sit with the berserkers that wore animal skins high on mushrooms. Their primal scream was them being the animal they are portraying..bear wolf mountain lion
2:42 holding axe backwards , love it
Iknow it looks weird but it can be intentional. Cause the back of a axe is almost just like a (sledge)hammer. What you can use for a heavy attack on a shield or something like that, to push the enemy backwards and not taking the risk that you axe would be stuck in the shield.
@@035gogmofo6 no its not. there isn't enough weight to mimic a bludgeoning weapon. plus the backside usually does not have a lot of metal on it unless it has a counter weight.
He probably meant to throw it
He was spinning the ax
4:42 when althewulf realised Hvitserk was crazy
Cool scene but the writers really need to learn about tactics. This would have worked better if the Saxons had gathered in the centre of town and then the Vikings came up with them surrounded. It's similar to when Lagertha had an *amazing* defensive terrain advantage in the final episode but she just charges despite the fact she knows they are outnumbered now.
It seems more of a directional fault than a writing fault. I can see they were trying to portray civilians running away from the Vikings who emerged but didn't show them really blocking the way for the Anglo-Saxon warriors.
+Andrew Stagg good point the director(s) tend to be more responsible for how battle scenes turn out.
IVAR THE BONELESS
It would have been far more effective to make the ambush during the dead of night when most of the Saxons were asleep. As far as the history records show, Vikings were skilled skirmishers and harassers that practiced guerilla warefare. Attacking in the dead of night wouldn't be too farfetched for them. This was just bad, bad, baaaad writing.
03:09 when u join the server and it's complete mayhem but thats what u're here for
Don't care about the stupid tactics, this scene is made by Hvitserk at 3:10 just laughing and then going beserk!
how I watched this scene:
me: O Yeah I tought they were in the sewers, now they'll just wait until dark to ambush them, clever move!
*vikings prepare to climb out*
me: Wait what they're going out now? But the entire Saxon army is right there!
*vikings climbs out one by one*
me: This is insane they just gave up both their numerical AND fortified advantages!!!
*vikings actually defeat Saxons*
me:....Ok this show is really losing it...
lmao same reaction
To be honest it is wise attack now. Reason is, they knows Saxon army won't able to react and take an action immediately since civilians are caught in the raid. Plus vikings wear random armour and shirt, so it is hard for them to identify which or who the raiders and civilians. They used the confusion tactic.
Well at least better than GOT8
@@kalgeriax1016 Not really wise, tbh. The Saxons were already suspicious due to the rats, and it would've been fairly easy to "shield-wall" the sewers while simultaneously pushing any stray civilians out of harm's way. In fact, all the Saxons had to do was stab down, not slashing forward (so no civilians would've been hurt anyway). Instead they stood still even AFTER all the civilians were gone, allowed the viking's full force to climb out of the sewers, THEN decided to attack. The vikings may have had the element of surprise, but the Saxons had the "high-ground". They shouldn't have lost.
@Iron Man but you are the big gay. More gayer than normal gay
The show made the Saxons look like idiots. You see so many rats and the Vikings suddenly disappeared. That would have been a clue that something is not right.
Manny Lugz I dont understand what the rats had to do with anything. Care to explain?
The rats live underground. They came above ground because the vikings were hiding in the basement.
Fu'Shao Baine Aah Thanks bud
Tsai Chou Zhang maybe the ones that hasn't seen battle or Vikings would think that, but they had been fighting the Vikings for a while during this point in history and would have know that unless you burned their bodies or saw them sail away, they weren't gone
They have yet to see underground tunnels .. so the thought that the vikings are underground would never have occurred to them.
Every time that Hvitsek screams. It hits different👏🍻
So they just let them climb up the ladder before engaging them?
Joprey Mar bad writing by the show writers
@@lightning2436 Extremely bad
The element of surprise led to a moment of saturation for the Christians, its psychological trick done by a maniac (Ivar) that was trained by a psycho (Floki)
@@rahulkancherla3466 no... just no
The Rats are actors too :) they were given something to keep them calm during the scene and are also pets. They get hired out for other movies and shows
Fun Fact: Absolutely everyone misses Ragnar
Another fun fact
Season 5 and 6 were jokes
@@youshallnotpass2156 Yes...... But they have to continue with a history
@@youshallnotpass2156 In my opinion only second half of 5 and all of 6, they have fossilized the entire show in the battle between Bjorn and Ivar and the Rus when they should have elaborate on the Great Heathen Army and the Ragnarrsson unite in England against saxons, with different arcs always in correlation with each other, Ivarr making his reign in Scottish isles and Dublin, Hvitzerk in York, Bjorn in Sweden and Sigurd in Denmark. That would have been awesome and more loyal to history
I don't. there are other characters stronger than Ragnar.
Travis was too good of an actor for this series’s own good, everybody else just seems like complete ass when compared to him, only flokis actor is close to his ability in acting
I enjoy Hvitserk more when he is in combat mode, he acts like a beserker.
He got rocked though. The king stunned him with two big punches...just saying.
Can we get some appreciation for Prince Aethelwulf. The man is a great character and the actor is amazing at it. I can't help but root for him
Moe is an awesome physical and emotional actor. He really came on in the later seasons before his death
@@kkonacreed8638 and it shows
the best thing about Hvitserk is how has the epic switch button that just makes unstoppable
It's okay to be SAXON!!!⚔
13BRAVO REDLEG saxon lives matter
Ivar was unpredictable 🔥
No. The show is mind numbingly stupid. It's so consistently moronic it's predictable
Aethelwulf and Heahmund.. new favorites
Same! Except that I liked Aethelwulf right from the start.
Pickle Rick Yeah so? Do I have to justify liking his character to you? Is he any different from basically ANY other character in the show? Mister Moral over here...
Pickle Rick who’s honorable on this show? Who? Do I hear crickets?
first his wife fucked another man and was carrying his child even though he was dutiful husband those people he killed were all rapers pillagers and killers they were Vikings
Rip
- Saxons: "It's over, we have the high ground"
- Vikings: "But show's name it's Vikings"
- Saxons: "OK, let's continue two seaons more"
Love how this scene portrates medieval close combat. Its not the usual glorified scene where the major characters mows down any enemies one by one and emerging unbothered, it's pure chaos where everything is your weapon, people clashing swords and shields at every direction, blood and mud all mixed up together, numerous bodies littered in the ground unsure if they are dead or just injured and unconscious, no rules and you just have to win.
3:10 i miss this hvitserk 😞
Same. Good thing he is healing and returning to his old self in the new season.
@@kristiyangrigorov5232 but again with Ivar 😂
Hvitserk reminds me a lot of Rollo
Hvitserks is in a battle trance fucking amazing
Aethelwulf vs Hvitserk ⚔⚔❤❤
I jumped ship midway through season 4 lol but I still come back to watch random clips on RUclips. The show started off so incredibly strong. Btw, Travis Fimmel has been great on Raised by Wolves
I really like that the Saxons allowed the Northmen time to come out of the two holes they appeared out of. Ivars 3 inch knives cutting into armor like butter is also a funny touch.
That English guy was a real viking at heart!
This is a very risky plan on Ivar part because they can easily knock them down as they're climbing up but sometimes you can to take a gamble plus there is nowhere else to hide in this town.
Hvitserk~
Master of the drunken axe.
The moment "leaving the sewer" became synonymous with "jumping the shark."
I wanted to see Hvitserk vs Aethelwolf SO BAD
Same
Intense Battle !and also ....great meet between Aetherwulf and Hvitserk
I think if memory serves me the accounts of this battle were that they waited till they were asleep and drunk and they attacked under the cover of night taking key points of York such as the gates and the keep then just closed in on the surrounded and trapped Saxons. This is just an educated guess though.
Jorvik to be precise. I'm from York & was on the archeology dig that discovered the longboat. I also did the welding for the hut frames in the Jorvik Viking Museum. I come from Stamford Bridge where the last great battle was fought. When we were kids we knew where it was fought because of the ploughing & flooding around the river Derwent. The soil is very heavy clay & you could find artifacts (something the Time Team could not establish). York was also known as Eborcaerum by the Romans.
This must be where the ninja turtles learned it from. sewer hiding/warfare.
2:35 what a scene
btw with Ivar that crazed smile on his face just makes u like him even more 👌
Ivar should have planned the defend of Winterfell
Oh my god he would have ROCKED as part of the Nights watch....or hell...I could see him as a badass Wildling. He and that ginger who loved Brienne would have been 2 peas in a pod
Ivar quickly became one of my favorite characters
What is best in life?
To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you and to hear the lamentation of their women!
Ah, good times
Love the interaction between Aethewulf and Hvitserk
3:08 savage
I like how bishop hegmund is just spouting gospel verses while killing vikings left and right
Although not particularly historically accurate (did they actually have sewers in York at the time?) this is a very intense battle scene, and extremely well filmed on a tight budget. A lot of people comment on how "hot" they think Alex Hogh Anderson is, but he scuttles around here like a big, badass Norway rat, and he's utterly terrifying. I should know, I used to live in a place that was infested with Norway rats, and they're fracking AWFUL!
Sewers predate even the Romans. Pretty sure the Briton Celts already had sewers before the Roman invasion, and we know for sure that sewers were already used in the Near East by the Assyrians, Phoenicians and Israelites.
At least 1 intact Roman sewer has been found in York, it is however way smaller than depicted in the show, the Vikings would have to crawl single file through it. It is also made of stone blocks not bricks.
Ahh yes, I remember this. We trekked across the marshlands of the Fens to get to York. Took a bloody long time..
Hvitzerk has the best war cry by far🙌🏻

Hi love your uploads I was wondering when the other part of this battle is gonna be uploaded?
It is also well known that the norse where very clean people who bathed regular, cleaned their clothes and took an interest in their appearance. trimmed hair and beards etc . not the image that sells films but true none the less . ....... Never let a fact get in the way of a good story !
Nice of them to let them all come out, before doing anything, that's fair play
Its weird to think that the Vikings once fought battles only a few miles away from where I live
this video ended in the beginning of an epic scene...
The vikings ambush the saxons ambushing the vikings ambushing the saxons
Ivar should have won like 500 awards for his acting in S5
Soo truee
Ivar "here's the plan: we move through the methane gas filled sewers with lit torches and attack...."
Lol
Ever the gentlemen these Brits. Waiting patiently for everyone to arrive to the tea party before starting.
Basically yanks haven't got the slightest clue about British history
After the Vikings state their claim to York, some leave but most of them stay and live in the place, after Alfred becomes the new king, this is when the story of The Last Kingdom begins...
First of all, the Army had to protect their people from the Vikings, their were multiple holes, there was confusion and the soldiers were unprepared for the assault.
Don't even try to defend the shit writing, cuz it's impossible
Ragnarr's true legacy was bearing warfighters who created the heathen army. Even Ivar "the boneless", whose name could've meant he had a bone disease or translated could also mean Ivar "the despicable".
Pretty silly how this show makes the Vikings into the cool rock stars whilst the Saxons are bumbling idiots. In fact they weren't that different culturally, the Saxons also had a warrior culture, but there were also Christians and builders by this point. Just around 300 years before this the Saxons had been barbarian northern raiders from the ocean themselves.
Love how ivar tells everyone to be quiet than fuckin yells 5 seconds later😂😂
Hvitserk was lowkey handling Athelwulf
Nah it was a tie at best idk why athelwulf always seems soooo gasses in fights lmao but he stronger than hvisterk here combat wise experience wise and strength wise
The best ailment that you can inflict upon your enemies, is complacency.
Ivar is so smart..... the first hit was to the moral and hope
I agree with the minority of comments about the majority of dults talking about how unrealistic it is the Saxons just "stood around and let the Vikings pop out one by one". You gotta use your brain and remember that almost none of us have ever fought in a mideivol weapons-style battle. The Saxon army is celebrating in the streets mixed in with the countryfolk. Do you think that every soldier has a Birdseye view or the view we see from a camera?...just staring at the random spots of ground that go to the the sewers? Some aren't armed soldiers, most are distracted with their guard down, and a TON of them have their view blocked by the crowd of people they're surrounded by. When you go to a giant concert and stand in the middle of a huge crowd, will you be able to see what a handful of people are doing 15 feet away? No. You are going to see bodies or the back of heads or who you are directly interacting with. It is also to note that the attack is coming from the ground up, making it even harder to spot in a crowd. And out of the few that do, they have to try to alert the rest and get them to mobilize or into into formation as they stand around distracted and scattered. By the time you get enough soldiers to understand the situation, you already have arrows flying and bodies dropping and random combat happening all around while most don't even know where it's coming from by the time they realize it is happening. Commanding officers can't just order formations in a blindside attack. Maybe the directing is done a bit exaggerated, but that is to give us the viewers a clear view and understanding of the strategy as with most movie/TV battles. All cinematic battles are exaggerated. Plus, the tactical strategy of using arrows, throwing knives, etc means the first few Vikings who make their way up through will be quickly picking off those close enough to spot the breach. It's not that farfetched if you use your head.
Aethulwulf was always lowkey a beast in combat.. Hes a brawler, its like when u think he's about to be done in he just keeps going nuts lol I was hype for him to fight Hvitserk who's like a berkserker on the battlefield... Didn't disappoint
I read the title as “The Vikings ambush the saxons in New York” and i was like, *They WHAT*
People are mistaking and forgetting the part there were archers shooting from both sides sandwiching them allowing people to come out of the sewers
True. And having the terrified civilians and the king caught right in the mix contributed to the confusion. I'm sure the soldiers were pretty terrified too. And perhaps they initially thought they were stragglers burrowing out, not an entire army.
@@Sup_Mate This scene is nonesense, stop trying to make excuses to make it look realistic, they completely butchered this show with scenes like this, in real life these vikings would have died one by one if they did what they did in this scene.
Shock and awe at its finest. No one knows what they would truly do if this exact thing happened. You might just watch or act accordingly. A matter of seconds to decide is a bitch especially if you go cold and the adrenaline kicks.
We must follow the rules! Let them club out of the manholes so we can right them better!
The way Aethelwulf looked at Hvitserk like literally "Jesus Chirs 😨... for the love of God someone get me away from this little mf".
Not gana lie. This is pretty gay. Maby if the archers where hidden on the roofs and the shield bearers came from the ground and buildings I'd belive it. But this is a little ridiculous how they just started to destroy them
Saxons are cowards, they were always scared of the raiding Vikings.
is it just me or would these battles be better without the music
Aethalwulf fights like a pagan that shows experience In combat I love it
Aethelwulf was just a complete badass
one of my favourite fight scenes so far
You got to be kidding
It was more drama then realistic but whatever

Why didn't they just attack as they where climbing up???
terrible plot armor from a hack director
Our school when it’s dinner
Hahahahhahahah
This is actually something I'd HOPE my enemies would do in their stupidity. Never a worse tactic I've seen on television.
Now that’s a battle scene 👍
Whats the point in having shields that arrows literally still hit you through lol
Well i mean it depends on the kind of shield and how its made. Time?
Better than nothing
Now the world knows that Whales is separate from the rest of humanity.
This is pretty unrealistic
