the thing I honestly love about it the most is the shape of it on wheels. With the normal shopvac being a narrow top heavy round object, any time I tried rolling it around connected to something it always wanted to tip over.
...and you probably know this already, but Festool also makes a cyclone separator (and of course its expensive) that pairs with the midi. I've been using a homemade cyclone separator made from a 5 gal bucket paired with my shop vac for years and I will tell you that it makes a huge difference. I only empty my shopvac about once a year, because the separator catches the majority of the debris. I mounted my separator on the top of my shopvac, and although it looks a bit Frankenstein-ish, it works great and is super easy to empty. It also has the added benefit of keeping the internal pleated filter on the vac much cleaner, and hence the improves the suction. Let me know if you want more info on it and I'll send you the info and some pics. Thanks again for the great review!
Wow, the new MIDI seems to do better than I thought it would. It's interesting that when you pulled on the handle of the old Shop Vac one side came loose, which is one of my beef's with that brand and it does the same thing on my old Shop Vac. I also had similar concerns with using it for sanding and with my Kreg track saw in that it was loud and only had one speed--full on and super loud. I really like that Festool sander and will probably pick one up the next time I'm near a WoodCraft store. I just got the Festool TS55 track saw and the same model dust extractor you have and I also love using both of them together. I'm on the road full time with my wife in our Fifth-Wheel RV, but I didn't want to give up my woodworking hobby full-time, so now I make things for the RV. Thanks for the nice overview.
How do you like the track saw? I've been eyeing one for awhile now. I'd love to add it to my Festool collection. Now that I own a house I have some projects that I'd like to tackle and feel the track saw would be useful (redoing my deck and front stairs). That's pretty cool you and the wife are on the road full time in an RV. I'd love to do that even for a few months time. I love road trips and grew up in the midwest.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 I got the Kreg Track Saw and work table first and while it was nice and got the job done I felt that it was a little underpowered. When I mounted the track onto the workstation I lost the ease and ability to cross cut pieces offsite. Now that I have used the Festool track saw with the supplied 55” track it’s a world of difference by comparison. It’s so much easier to use and it works much better than the Kreg Track Saw system does. While the cost of the MFT is way above what I paid for the Kreg System, I feel that it would have been smarter just to get the Festool system first and be done with it. There are a couple different tracks and getting the one with the cutouts in it would be a smarter move if you plan to take the saw and track offsite for any projects. Also you will need the second track with connectors if you need to cut full size sheets of plywood.
A nice saver for me was adding a cyclone in between my vac and tools. It means I really have no need to change filters which is a nice money saver. The noise of a shop vac is really killing me though. I'm very keen to get a festool or perhaps Makita or milwuakee but the festool seems to be the smallest.
Shop vacs can be hard on the ear drums for sure! A standard shop vac measures at 90 dB or more. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) states we can tolerate 8-hours of exposure to 85 dB of sound a day. Festool’s dust extractors they have a low noise level between 62 dB and 67 dB. I couldn’t believe how quiet it was when I first used mine. I’m three years in now and still absolutely love my Festool dust extractor. Worth every penny!
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 That's a comment that convinces me to make the change. I've been unsure of brand choice as festool has pushed others to become better and Makita and milwuakee now have great units at comparable level. Festool is the most compact though. I kind of regret not going festool "gear" over Milwuakee for compatibility of boxes etc but festool is SOOOO expensive here in Australia compared to others and its not the tool cost but the accessories that they sting you on. $400 for a hose... :(
Madelaine I *really* think a DIY cyclone is a great choice if you find the Festool unit filling up too often. I bought a $25 cyclone attachment on ebay, found a rigid plastic box (must be rigid or vacuum will colapse it) and then bolted it to the cyclone attachment. to form a perfect seal I placed cling wrap on the lip of container then filled lid with expanding foam before locking it onto container. Let set then trimmed foam excess. A plumbing 90 deg bend added on top of cyclone and I now have an extra 30L of volume AND very little dust is even reaching the filters. My vacuum stay empty. I have been looking carefully at the Festool Systainer vacuum to use with my cyclone for this reason. Tiny, seems powerful and QUIET. I don't know if it can run as long as the unit you have though :). Hope this helps give back a little help to you - and thank ytou for your very helpful review!
Thank you so much for this review! This is got to be one of the most complete reviews I have seen. I am getting my start in woodworking and have a bent on the Festool brand. Yes certainly on the pricier side but you get what you pay for. The tools are quite impressive and you can tell the quality just by picking them up. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing more videos from you!
Thank you for leaving such a nice comment! I appreciate the feedback immensely. In my opinion the Festool line of power tools is the absolute best, you can’t go wrong. I now have four sanders and the dust extractor. They make my work actually enjoyable.
So true! You have to invest back into your business if you want it to grow. This addition was vital for me. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a nice comment. 😊
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Festool initially is a hit to anyone's pocket book but once past that, as you know, you enjoy using the tool and value the earning power it provides to your business. Wishing you a safe and prosperous 2021!
@@kiwdwks Your comment sums it up perfectly for those on the fence about buying any a Festool product. It’s a hit for sure to the wallet but the post-positives it brings it well worth it. Happy New Year to you and thank you for sharing your thoughts. 😊
You are so welcome! Yeah I kick myself for not purchasing the dust extractor earlier. It's made a world of difference. You'll have to report back and let me know what you think of it.
I’m not into refinishing but I have the CT26 for my domino, track saw, and router. The thing about the CT26 is that I have the festool ct cyclone on it which extends the life of the filter bags 10 to 1, or more. I like that you midi has Bluetooth included, I had to add it to mine. Nice upgrade. Don’t ever feel like you have to justify a tool purchase for your business to anyone, especially anyone on the internet. It’s your business, you only have to satisfy yourself.
Man I imagine just gaining the flexibility of the ETS by ditching the gerry rigged connector tube you had on the previous setup was liberating, and helped with that two handed fighting feeling you had prior. I've been on the Festool train for about 10yrs. Most all of my use is out in the field and I bought into Festool sanders and extractors as a selling feature for on site in customers homes. Started with a CT 26 and a few sanders. These days I have two CT 26's and a CT 36ac which is dedicated to a drywall sander. My original CT 26 is still running and has never been sent in for any kind of service, so I think your investment will serve you for many many years. I have replaced some exterior parts like the hose garage and the coil wrap. That's the cost of being tossed in and out of work vans I reckon. Even though my og 26 still performs well I have decided to replace it with a midi. I like the idea of a slightly smaller footprint for ease of transport, vehicle space, and mobility in the field. Vid is almost a year old but I have opted to not use the long life bags as they are not recommended for fine dust and sanding typically is fine dust. Instead a cyclone would preserve bag life and would work well in a shop environment. Thanks for the vid on the midi and hope you are enjoying your investment.
I have the CT MIDI also. I'm pretty amazed at how much capacity the bag has. I'm still on my first bag. If you ever need to vacuum fluid, they make a separate sponge filter which replaces the HEPA filter. Overall I'm super impressed.
Your comment reminded me I need to check my bag! Good to know the tip about vacuuming up liquid. I haven't needed to do that yet but that's valuable information, so thank you!
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 You’re welcome! Yeah, I was told that if you don’t remove the HEPA filter and use it to suck up water, the filter gets destroyed and possible harm to the motor too. Also, sometimes I browse Etsy for specific hose adapters/nozzles Festool might not make.
HI, i am saving up for one. One item you have not mentioned. That it also have a manual dust filter cleaner, You cover the end of the hose to cause it to go into high volume and you press down the green level you see on the size. This help clean the filter, of course in time its will becomes too dirty, but this method will prolong its life and more importantly keep the CFM flow rate at the right pressure.
You can buy the "hose garage" separately for the cheaper CT 15 model (it's around $50). In fact, you can pretty much turn the CT 15 into the MIDI by buying the extra parts (hose storage, brake pedal, filter cleaner, anti-static hose). The only things I think you can't add to the CT 15 is the Bluetooth module and the flow sensor included in the CTM versions.
@@interceptor7905 - Only if you need _all_ the extra features of the MIDI. If, like me, you don't need the buetooth module, the filter-cleaning lever, the brake pedal or the anti-static hose, there's no point in paying nearly twice as much for the MIDI, compared to getting the CT-15 and upgrading just the hose storage.
great purchase and a great match with the sander. You end up with 99% dust extraction and to me, that is worth a ton. Not having to breath in all that dust, no need to clean up all that dust etc is worth the money to me.
I should have watched this prior to yesterday. Last night I upgraded and got a Festool Dust Extractor and sander. I got the Rotex 90. I was super nervous about the dust extractor. I kept questioning... does it really work as well as I think it will? So I'm curious how you have enjoyed it since your purchase back in January. I feel like my biggest battle in the shop is dust from sanding. So this was primarily why I decided to get it.
I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE my Festool dust extractor. I have three sanders I have it hooked up to...I have two orbital sanders and then their RTS 400 (rectangular sander). It's made a world of difference with my sanding game. I'm sanding faster, cleaner and overall working more efficiently.
Looks like you're using the Festool sandpaper. After reading about it for a while, I tried the 3M Cubitron paper for the first time recently, and it's amazing. Cuts super fast and smoothly. Amazing stuff. I've got a MIDI on order myself, and I'm looking for one of the EC 125/3 sanders. Such quality products!
Don’t forget to put your systainers on top of the vac so your accessories to your tools are handy. I own the CT36 AC. I love the auto clean function!!!!
I’m going to be buying this dust extractor now @ I will be using your link! Do you know if it works well with a wood planer? It creates very thick wood shavings vs fine dust from sanding. Would like to know the answer to that. Thanks!
Yes I believe it can! I was doing a little research and found this link: www.festoolusa.com/products/planing/planer/576612---hl-850-eb-plus-usa#Overview You might have to get a special attachment to hook it up. I hope this helps.
For a DeWalt planer, adding dust extraction is ill advised as the planer can stall out the motor on an extractor because it cannot keep up with the airflow.
Sounds like we bought our Festools at the same time. I used my CT-26 ($740!) on my latest project and the sander is louder then the vacuum! For me, that was the best part. I have a Makita random orbit sander that I used a pipe clamp on for the hose and that worked fine. So I paid for SILENCE.
Yeah the dust extractors are not cheap that's for sure! You are right they are super quiet. I've been enjoying mine so far. It's been a good investment.
That machine has got to be a godsend for people with allergies. This is why I don't do many sanding projects in winter, as even in the garage it's way too much dust. BTW, what grit did you use to take that top finish off? Looked effortless!
Yes I would think so too. I was dumbfounded there was absolutely no dust after I sanded the top of that dresser. I was expecting there might be a tiny bit. Nope! Nada! Crazy!!! I started with 150 grit then changed to 120 grit. I can tell my sander works even better than that it’s paired with the dust extractor.
Thanks! Well, I might have to wait on the next stimulus check for mine, lol - as that unit sure isn't cheap. But I bet it will last you a very long time! And sometimes, the great benefits and advantages a quality tool or device brings one is ultimately worth every penny.
@@philipatoz Festool tools certainly aren’t cheap! Worth the investment? Absolutely! I wish I could get them all! Haha! I heard the Powerball and MegaMillions lottery’s are both at 500 million this week....😳 Hmmmmm! Well best of luck with your decision. Whatever model you choose you really can’t go wrong.
One thing you should do often with your midi is use the cleaning function on the side of the vacuum, set the vacuum to full suction, hold your hand over the hose and push the cleaning function down a few times. Try doing this quickly after every sanding. It retains the great suction on the extractor but most important it keeps your expensive HEPA filter brand new and super clean
Great purchase. Happy to see those excited about new tools. I have the same dust extractor (older model). Only suggestion is to be mindful of the long life bags if your primary function is sanding. I feel they work much better with larger particles such as saw dust from power saws/routers for the longevity to be realized. Fine sanding seems to reduce the life of the long life bags. 😜
Great review! I'm with you on the festool bandwagon. I'm shopping for a mini or midi on ebay along with a Rotex 125 sander, but i may even breakdown and buy new. there is nothing that comes remotely close to the festool eco-system.
Well said! You are absolutely right on with your comment. Nothing compares. Best of luck with getting a Festool set up. I finally just bit the bullet. Money well spent.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Thanks; I have a hard time spending that kind of money, but that's just my personality. I'll have no regrets when I finally do! Festool products work really well, and are integrated to all work together, and thats what really matters! (I think your just braver than me)
@@barry3400 I’m so cheap in all other aspects of my life trust me. Haha! I finally realized why am I working so hard when I could be working smarter with a better line of power tools. It’s an all around win win!
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Well, Bethany due in large part to you and your motivational dust collector review, I have purged all of my old sanders (? dust generators) sold them all on eBay and taken the “Festool plunge” I bought myself a very lightly used Festool Rotex 125!! I’m so excited to enter the high tech dust free (almost) world of modern sanding. I saved my old belt sander just in case, but if the Rotex works as well as I think it will, that may get eBay’d too.
So happy for you! Just last week I started researching Festool after hearing so many great things. Saw your video with the sander n how you hooked it up to your shop vac n now this video. I am so so happy for you! I think I have decided to get the same sander n now trying to decide between the Midi or CT 15 - my husband wants me to bite the bullet n go for the MIDI but the $$$ is making me sweat! 😂 😓 Love your videos! Congratulations n enjoy your new Festool Midi.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the review. I spoke with a gentleman who has the CT 15 and the most annoying thing to him is it lacks the hose storage and he can’t stack his Festool cases on top. Sounds like petty little issues but day after day little nuisances like that can be bothersome. The hose is also anti static and the unit has a brake. I guess it all depends how often you will be using it and if you need to take it to job sites or around a big workshop. You’ll like the sander. It gets the job done. I use it A LOT! Well I hope my insight helps you make the most sound decision for you and the hubby. Thank you for commenting! 😁

It’s expensive, but it’ll be worth it. It only seems outrageously priced because you’re comparing it to a home center shop vacuum. If you look into true HEPA certified vacs, Festool isn’t out of line with their prices at all. Just a bit above the middle of the field price wise, but near the top performance wise. Thanks for the review.
All very good points! You are correct! Festool’s pricing is right in line with other dust extractors, especially with their high level of performance. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.

:Edited: I also upgraded to Festool recently, and had a similar experience, it's totally worth the money to me. You did kind of bury the lead about the auto triggering outlet, people new to Festool probably didn't understand the significance. That and variable suction are THE reason to go with these setups. Another good point is that Festool sanders have better dust removal than other sanders, especially any homestore brand. One minor correction, The Midi is the Third In the line-up. The CT-15 is $350, then the Mini for $590, then the Midi for $640... and up from there. The CT-15, Mini and Midi are all based on the same internals, so the same motor, same suction power. The Mini/Midi adds: Bluetooth trigger, Anti-static hose, hose garage, Systainer mount and Brake. The CT-15 and Midi have about the same 4 gallon capacity and the Mini is 2.6 Gallon. I choose the CT-15 because it has the advantages of a Festool Vac at almost half the price. You do get the auto triggering outlet, variable suction and almost the same capacity as the Midi... and they do give you two noozles with the CT-15. I ended up also buying an antistatic hose, so I spent about $460 in total, I keep my "good" hose in the shop. All the Mini/Midi features would have made my life a bit easier, and it was what I afford, but I will probably go to the Midi in the future. Another handy use of the Bluetooth function is that you can purchase a trigger that attaches to the hose end so you can power the vac on/off without going back to the unit. I am a bit annoyed that there is no path forward to upgrading the CT-15. At the very least they could make a hose garage/ systainer dock. The CT-15 does have door on top, but it's a very shallow storage area that can only hold the nozzles and a few small items. You can get the power cord inside if you carefully wrap it in a small coil, but it's not worth the time.
Fantastic information! Thank you for going in-depth with all the advantages Festool has to offer. Great comment! I appreciate you giving your first hand experience with the CT 15. Listing pros and cons is helpful to those on the fence with what model to consider buying.
@@fotopdo Thank you for the correction on the line up of the dust extractors. I’ll be doing two more reviews on the third generation sanders behind me. 😊
I always say whatever works for you keep doing it. That’s a real good run! 13 years?! Impressive! I’ve had my $40 Ryobi sander for 6 years and it’s been good to me.
Thats a random orbital, not an orbital, you could try a festool rotex with 3m xtract paper and you might find you get the job done in a fraction of the time so you can do way more and buy even more cool new tools
Great product review! I felt your joy. Congrats on the new upgrade. Due to the cold weather (and not heating my shop) I am doing my glue-ups and sanding in one of the spare rooms in my house. I am jealous! But, spring is coming and things will be back to normal soon. So I will put one of these on the list behind upgrading my table saw, bandsaw, and getting a wide belt sander. I'm in my 50's and well.... there is always that next tool I just have to have. Lol As always, thank you!
Thank you for watching! I'm still so in love with my new set up. Well worth the investment and I regret not pulling the trigger sooner. Hopefully once Spring arrives you can get yourself one too!
Some festool units are only different because of filter and still $200 difference so be very careful any shoppers in what model you look at for the hardware.

Great choice. Get some Mirka pad savers and Mirka Abranet abrasive disks from Amazon for your Festool sander. They are superior to Festools abrasive discs. That will make your sanding even more dust free. The screen abrasives last a long time and aren’t crazy expensive. Don’t buy the reusable Festool bag, the filtration is worse than the paper bags. Just go outside with a dust mask and dump the dust out of the bag into trash bag. I do it all the time with sawdust that fills the bags fast. Best of luck to you.
I love all this valuable information! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I’m going to definitely look into those Mirka pad savers and abrasive disks. Anything to save a little $$$ and if they work just as well or even better that’s a no brainer. Thanks again!
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 I just bought the Midi for $659, so it didn't go up too much. I bought the Midi (and the Rotex 150 and 90), just after watching your video and I LOVE them, so thanks :). I honesty am shocked at how it sucks up practically all of the dust!
Dont think cordless sander is the best option... you will have a hose attached anyway and batteries die eventually (and maybe they wont sell replacements years later) and you cant use the festool sander batteries for any other tool.
Good advice! A logical thinker. I appreciate your thoughts. For the time being I’m going to stay with the corded power tools. The only cordless one I have is a nail gun.
God why are you so adorable yet so hot 🥵 . She’s my wifey. Also I believe you left out the CT mini, either that one or you left out the CT 15 E Which is the cheapest model. The CT mini is exactly like the MIDI but it has less capacity, usually 99% of people pay the extra $50 to get the larger capacity MIDI, not much people buy the mini. I just bought my festool Midi last week and absolutely love it, I use it along with my Mirka Deros 6” orbital sander, which costed nearly $900 alone for the sander. I don’t have a lot of money but I think when you buy quality tools, it pays you over more than you can even think of. People need to consider that high quality tools make your job fun, make you finish your jobs sooner, so more money is made, puts less wear on your own body (my Mirka sander is only 2 pounds compared to my old sander that was 6 pounds, I immediately feel it much easier for me to sand all day long), high quality tools make you as a professional look extremely high end, the first impressions given to the customers from having high quality tools like festool or Mirka ALONE is worth the price, people know you take your work seriously and are the real deal. Lastly, high end tools like festool and Mirka usually have the best warranties. For example my Mirka sander, the plug was coming loose once and I took it to my festool dealer and they basically gave me a brand new Mirka Deros no questions asked. All the benefits out weigh the main con which is the price
Best thing I love about the midi is that it’s so square and compact, it also fits my one festool sustainer which houses my vacuum cleaning attachments, AND then I connect my 2 Mirka systainers on top and even with everything I can still pick up the entire vacuum, and 3 systainers
I would say there are numerous high quality tools available. In many cases the competing brands offer quality for far less money. I think it is unlikely customers generally care what tools someone uses and they are rarely going to know Festool versus Bosch, Dewalt or any of the other options, all of whom make very good power tools.
Might be 2 years too late, but since you talk about upgrading to cordless versions of sanders, there is not much practical point. Since you all the tools associated with dust collection (sanders, routers, saws, etc.) Will be on a hose, the cable is not that much of the hassle. I am jealous of festool users because you can tape one cord to the hose and then just connect whichever tool you need. Also as battery powered tools go, sanders do not last that long even with higher Amp/hour batteries. Your setup is pretty well off as seen in this video.
Not trying to be rude or super negative here, just a little input about people like myself. I like detailed explanations, BUT you totally lost me @15 minutes into video when you still hadn't even turned the machines on yet. Sorry!!
The title of the video is my FULL REVIEW. Awesome! I waited too long as well. Kicking myself!
the thing I honestly love about it the most is the shape of it on wheels. With the normal shopvac being a narrow top heavy round object, any time I tried rolling it around connected to something it always wanted to tip over.
I totally agree! The weight is distributed evenly on the dust extractor. You pull it towards you and it comes over, no tipping like a Shop Vac.
...and you probably know this already, but Festool also makes a cyclone separator (and of course its expensive) that pairs with the midi.
Thank you for your very informative information on the CT MIDID I HEPA DUST EXTRATOR
You’re very welcome! It was one of my smartest purchases for my workshop.

I just got mine! I’m excited!
That’s a reason to celebrate! You will absolutely love it!
Great review thanks, you missed the blow facility, a useful thing for blowing off dust etc, cheers as we say in the UK, stay safe and keep 'em coming
You are correct. I did miss highlighting that feature. It's such a useful feature too!
Great review!! I’ve been on the fence about buying one, I think I’m going to get one. Thanks jus found your Chanel really enjoying all your tutorials.

You are so welcome! Yeah I kick myself for not purchasing the dust extractor earlier. It's made a world of difference. You'll have to report back and let me know what you think of it.
Can you use different brand sanders and routers with the festool?
Not to my knowledge. The dust extractor hose has specific connectors that fit perfectly with the Festool sanders.
Yes, check Rockler's connectors
You can also rig up your own adaptors.
Solid advice! Thanks for watching my video. Nothing compares to Festool products. They are phenomenal!
Great tip! Yes I totally forgot to mention that very important feature! Thanks for bringing it up here in the comments!
More efficient would be to buy Midi
@@interceptor7905 - Only if you need _all_ the extra features of the MIDI.
If, like me, you don't need the buetooth module, the filter-cleaning lever, the brake pedal or the anti-static hose, there's no point in paying nearly twice as much for the MIDI, compared to getting the CT-15 and upgrading just the hose storage.
I understand but pricewise end up being the same
@@interceptor7905 - No, it doesn't. Not even close. The MIDI costs 585 euros, the CT-15 costs 285 (+50 for the hose storage upgrade = 335)

great purchase and a great match with the sander. You end up with 99% dust extraction and to me, that is worth a ton. Not having to breath in all that dust, no need to clean up all that dust etc is worth the money to me.
BINGO! Those are exactly my thoughts as well. Thanks for watching!
Great presentation..careful with your hair when using machines..I’m bald so no problem!! Thanks..very informative
Thank you! Will do!
Yes good point! Thanks for watching!
I’m going to be buying this dust extractor now @ I will be using your link! Do you know if it works well with a wood planer? It creates very thick wood shavings vs fine dust from sanding. Would like to know the answer to that. Thanks!
Yes I believe it can! I was doing a little research and found this link:
www.festoolusa.com/products/planing/planer/576612---hl-850-eb-plus-usa#Overview
You might have to get a special attachment to hook it up.
Correct! I forgot to mention this function. Great advice!
I LIVE IN NH TOO!!!!!! I wish I could visit you and see the Festool in person :)
Thanks for the tips! That's good to know.
@@barry3400 I’m so cheap in all other aspects of my life trust me. Haha! I finally realized why am I working so hard when I could be working smarter with a better line of power tools.
I also upgraded to Festool recently, and had a similar experience, it's totally worth the money to me.

This site is great comparing all the different models of Festool dust extractors.
Was using other sanders... Never again. The "expensive" festool sanding paper is actually cheaper cuz it really lasts longer.
I totally agree! Festool sanders are a game changer!
The one in the high $300's is the 15, then it goes Mini (lower $600s), then Midi, which is yours (higher $600s)...
I paid $600 for mine 2 years ago. I can only imagine the price now.
Hi. Please, please, please put your hair up when you are working. Accident waiting to happen. Lean over once and it will not be pretty. Thanks.
I normally do when I'm working. When I film tutorials I leave my hair down often. Yes anyone with long hair should put it up for safety reasons.
This is $680 now lol
