Two major developments have improved this TV substantially since the time of the review: (1) The "black crush" or "detail crush" associated with the local dimming has been solved through a firmware update. (2) It has been frequently made available for $999, making it hundreds of dollars cheaper than the other sets it is being compared with. To be clear, this was a fantastic, thorough, accurate review at the time it was performed, and I appreciate all your work!!!

Agreed, however, after owning a Tizen TV for about six months now I've only seen ads about twice because I just Do Not allow my TV to connect to the Internet.
I do not trust the security of Samsung's software (a very temporary exception being just to retrieve updates, after that I disable all connections).
Without a connection the ads just don't show up... So far at least. I certainly agree it's a trend that needs to die nonetheless.

Got this TV for $999 on sale. Checked out the scenes from Stranger Things and Our Planet and they look nothing like the ones in the review. They were almost identical to the thumbnail version and black crush was very minimal, if any. That was straight out of the box, with Picture set to Dark and HDR Dark. To me, it looks like they patched that issue pretty well. This is a steal for a thousand bucks.

TCL is known for delivering good value sets at price points that are much lower than the competition so some compromise is to be expected. My son has the TCL 65 inch 615/617 and is very happy with it in spite of the very slight banding and gray uniformity shortcomings (and he watches a lot of sports programming). If corrections can be made to the dimming algorithm, then the Q825 will be a 2020 award winner.

Price just dropped this week to $1999 on BestBuy. [Oops! That lasted for a DAY! BestBuy price back up to the original $2,999 today! 5/5/20] Black crush might be better than indicated in this review - check out Caleb Denison's review on Digital Trends (see review at 3:40 minutes; Starfield display at 5:30 in the review). Although this is puzzling, because DT's review was submitted in November 2019 and claimed to have the "latest algorithm download" which supposedly improved the local dimming "black crush" performance. I would be surprised if RTINGS.com did not have the same update for this review in December...?

Had high hopes for this one. The bad local dimming crushing everything is a deal breaker for the price. Also, at his point, new TVs without HDMI 2.1 are just aggravating. I found many of the scenes in Stranger Things to be a challenge for TVs and an excellent example of the need for proper black levels and contrast. Some of these scenes have actually caused me to question my current TV's viewing quality and has me on a quest to find better ever since.

  • @StephenRutan
    @StephenRutan 4 года назад +1

I love the RTINGS.com reviews - consistent format, highly technical, professional. However, I STRONGLY DISAGREE with the "black crushing" evaluation for this TCL 8 series TV. I "home calibrated" my 75" 8 series with the blue ray disk from Spears & Munsil for Dark picture and Dark Dolby Vision setting (i.e., I am an amateur TV consumer...who can follow the simple instructions on this calibration disk. No problemo!). The scenes from the beginning of "Our Planet" on Netflix (1. View of earth from the moon, stars in the background are completely visible and 2. Close-up of the earth rotating from daylight to night - again, all of the stars to right and left of the planet are visible AND there is no annoying/marching dimming zones marching along with the edges of night-time Europe as the planet rotates). Similar results that are far superior to what is shown in this review for the scenes from Stranger Things. BTW: I am so grateful when online reviewers use actual, consumer-available scenes to illustrate their performance claims so we can test them out for ourselves!
I can only assume that RTINGS.com set the local dimming to High and did nothing to adjust the TV to achieve its best performance. I absolutely LOVE this TV. I picked it up 3 months ago for $1,800 at BestBuy. News Flash: It is now on sale at BBuy for $1,500! My only misgiving is that this TV is not future-proofed with HDMI 2.1 inputs...but I do not have the latest gaming console and don't expect to have one soon.
If you can wait just a few more months, the new TCL lineup (and, I suppose, the 2020 lineups from all of the other mfrs!) will be coming out soon. I expect that they will come with the new technology price tags too. If you want a great TV now, I highly recommend picking up this TV - especially at the current bargain price of $1,499 (vs. original MSRP of $2,999).
One last footnote, because I did a lot of research (see Digital Trends review of this TV - he LOVED it!): My son just bought the 65" LG OLED C9 and, in my opinion, there is no debate: the true blacks on that OLED do outgun the excellent LED performance of this TV. I just could not shell out the $3,500-4,000 for the 75" version. I am very pleased with this TCL 8 series TV.

I just saw this TV on sale at Bestbuy for the $1500 that you mentioned. I am really considering this TV now. I do have a question for you as you own it. How is the stand? Is there any wobble? Never buy the first model of a tv using new technology.
The mini led has a lot of potential, but it's not ready for prime time yet. TCL needs to step up their processing performance, and meet all the expectations of premium products in the space they are competing in.
No HDMI 2.1, and a crappy remote control, are a huge problem for a television TCL is pushing as their premium product.

Hello, I am a subscriber of your channel and watch all your honest reviews when posted including all the ones for the TCL 8 Series Mini-Led which I just picked up the 65 inch from Best Buy. I have come across a curious issue. I steam my television watching almost entirely from my Amazon Fire TV 4K stick. I have two. I have one plugged directly into the HDMI 1 of the 8 Series via HDMI High Speed Cable with Ethernet cable of the HDCP 2.2.2 decoding, and the other directly into my new Sony DH590 receiver with HDCP, 2.2.2 4K pass through and the Receiver to the TCL via ARC. I am an IPTV subscriber and get plenty of 4K content to watch. The issue I am having is with the HDR movies. All the 4K HDR movies are very dull and dark and totally not what I was expecting to see from HDR content which is suppose to be very bright images. The image is the same no matter which Fire TV 4K stick I am streaming from. It;'s the same when watching HDR encoded content on RUclips as well and changing the setting on the TCL makes no difference. However! The movies in 4K that do not say that they are HDR looks amazing like Gemini Man. I have gone over the settings of both the TCL 8 Series TV and the Firestick 4K to make sure all the setting are for 4K HDR output. Have you any suggestions to help me to resolve this issue. The 8 Series has an amazing picture when it's working as expected. But I was not expecting to have a dark, dull, lack of brightness from watching HDR content. I have reached out to TCL already for their help.

Got this TV when it was $1,000 at Best Buy, but my first panel had 5 pixels stuck or dead, and had horrible DSE, with a big black blotch right in the middle of the panel. Returned it hoping for a better one, but was worried already about TCL horror stories of poor quality control. Sure enough, my second panel had 8 dead or stuck pixels. That said, it was a cleaner panel with less DSE. But after returning this TV twice, I wasn't going to risk a third. That said, the panel does better with black crush, but the dark gradient is very, very bad. I don't think the picture processing algorithm is very good. But that dark gradient is so bad, once you see it, you can't unsee it. It's not as smooth as the white gradient. At $1,000 if you're not picky about imperfect panels, I'd get it. But any more than that, I'd pass. It's definitely a first gen product.

Does this TCl TV have the same problem as their others where the audio output is delayed if sending sound to a home theater system over optical cable? Please connect via optical and test. I have tried everything short of ARC over HDMI. Problem with ARC is I mostly use the TV for Direct TV so the source is DTV via HDMI so I don't think returning audio to the AVR via HDMI will work. My work around is to output audio from the DTV receiver to the AVR via optical and video to the TV over HDMI. This works fine for satellite but any of the apps from the TV are out of sync. If I had know of this issue with ROKU and TCL I would not have purchased.

This would be a great $1800 75" and $1100 65" tv.. but not at 3k, you would be an early adopter of their new technology that i doubt would have more than 2 firmware patches at this time of the year, 2 months before other manufacturers announce their new models for 2020 which might bring better or more competitive technology, and at the time of year where competitive early year models are heavily discounted. This tv is headed for a huge discount as a compromise on TCL part to feel free to move on to the drawing board next years model. Probably not on a commercial level for many years. Consoles are replaced every 5-7 years and their hardware becomes somewhat dated pretty quick. More than enough time to upgrade a television (since TVs generally don’t last that long either). The lack of games for Xbox is also not adding to its “future proofing”. By all means, if you feel HDMI 2.1 is relevant enough to not buy a certain console than so be it. It’s very minor in the grand scheme of things though.
