This is such a fun song. I think BJ's reaction proves it.
This is still a jam 40+ years later. One of the first times we ever saw a drummer singing lead on a song. You should see the official video. They are rocking it!!!
Don Henley, the Eagles? But maybe we didn't see him sing and drum unless it was live in concert. Also Phil Collins w/ Genesis. But he gave the drums to Chester Thompson after a little while.
Of course, can’t forget the great Karen Carpenter, even if it’s not true classic rock
@@posesepulu3771 Karen Carpenter playing "Caravan" is vicious!
I saw them at our university and became an instant fan of their music. The drummer sang this song, and he was simply great. I remember us calling him "animal" after the Muppets character as he was especially animated.
Jesse....what year was that? Lol
@@michaelasay8587 1983 Wang Chung was the other act that night.
This is STILL a banger and still one of my favorite songs. Always an immediate feel good.
We had such a good time dancing to this back in the day. Such great memories!!
Ikr?
The Romantics, so named because they formed on Valentine's Day 1977 in Detroit, have had only two US Top 40 hits - and this, now their best-known song, wasn't one of them. It attracted little attention and was only a minor hit when first released in 1980 on their debut album, but found new life later in the decade when it became a popular choice for an advertising jingle, particularly for Budweiser beer. Since then the song has also become a fixture at sporting events, bars and nightclubs, and parties and celebrations of all kinds, and has taken its place as one of the most popular rock anthems of all time.
The Romantics' two Top 40 hits were "Talking In Your Sleep" (#3) and "One In A Million" (#37). Both came in 1983, from their fourth album In Heat.

Funny this was a huge hit and staple among western NY colleges in the early 80s. It was played at every dance social and bar I can think of.
This song was on regular rotation on MTV. The drummer sings this song I believe.
I remember 1980, in college, at any party this song plays and everyone is immediately dancing. Good times!
I caught them live in Ann Arbor when they came out and they still had their red leather outfits. We met some of them in a bar in Detroit....great guys!
How can this video not have more likes?! The song is fantastic and Asia and BJ are adorable.
Eagles fans 😋
This is one of those classic MTV hits that gained an audience primarily from its video on constant rotation back in the 80s. It didn't have any special effects, it was just a straight fun band Jam and no one could sit still listening to it😃
Always hit the dance floor for this one!
Wish I could ! Too old now !
A LONG time ago! When it was popular lol!
Asia & BJ, you’ll love their “Talking In Your Sleep "Tell It To Carrie" and "When I Look in Your Eyes"!!!
When this, their first album came into the radio station, I thought it was the second coming of the Beatles!
One in a million another good song by the Romantics !! Your right Talking in your sleep is very good !!
Back when New Wave was actually New. A really good song. It has stood the test of time.
I absolutely loved his head bobbing while she looked on! Great band...great song...great reactions, guys!
What I Like About You reached Number 2 on the Australian National Charts for 2 weeks in September 1980.
Still rocks 42 years later.
This song brought fans of many genres together, often to dance. Many good times were had with “What I Like About You” as the highlight of the evening’s music! Merry Christmas Asia & BJ. Enjoy those kids and your time together. Thank you for the contribution your YT channel has made to the thoughtful enjoyment of music and the people we listen to it with.
Our pleasure!
Released In 1980...I Would Strongly Suggest Watching The Official Music Video For This One.
Saw them at the Agora in Dallas, early 80s. Played this song in several bands. Definite crowd pleaser.
Great song!
I love that BJ loves the romantic songs♥️
He’s so into you, Asia🥰
It's an oldie but an absolute goodie!
There is a recent band named "The Empty Hearts" thst is comprised of the singer from The Romantics, the drummer from Blondie, the guitarist from The Cras, and the baas player from The Chesterfield Kings.
The Romantics, Power Pop from Detroit, Michigan. Got to see them live one time, April Fools Day 1983, and the show was a ton o' fun. The boys rocked hard. HEY!!!
Use to see them playing at my favorite bars in Detroit in the late 70 early 80's. Good times.
Just goes to show like AC/DC the guys in the band are vertically challenged, so you play harder !
This was so much fun to dance to at the frats and bars at college in the 80s!! We had such a blast bouncing around singing this song at parties!
Doing The Pogo!!!!!
Man, stomping on the dance floor at The Cellar in Charlotte, NC in the 80's. This one alwasy got everyone on the floor. Great times....
❤ Your Reactions && ❤❤❤ This ! gave me a Great LOL ... I'm 64 & had Great R&R life in the 80's...Met Lots of famous people by making stage clothes or friends in Bands,( BEST 1983 friend Rob Hyman of Band called The Hooters...got to sit in a studio in Manayunk/Philly Pa while he & Cyndi Lauper were working on song Time after Time) The Romantics LOL...had friends in a band called The Sharks open for them..I danced through their set then went backstage( was taking shirts I made for them ) before Romantics went on...both bands were in the room,Romantics singer Wally said " Saw you dancing, I'd love to buy you a drink later" ...I said " that's fine , but doesn't mean you'll get anywhere" Whole room fell out laughing & their drummer said " She's got your number!" 🤣 Thanks for the Blast from the Past !!
they played this song in every bar and club back in the day!! a legitimate BANGER!
A group out of Austin called the Spazmatics sing this song. They make it a lot of fun to watch them sing it. You can find them on RUclips.
Loved dancing to this at the club. Never missed a chance when this was played
Oh wow, haven't heard this one in a while. It is such a cool, fun song - hard to sit still (like BJ!) The Romantics have other good tunes as well. Check them out. Thanks guys, love your reaction as always🧡
Yeah, If this song doesn't get your blood flowing and your toes tapping, you must be in a coma.
Glad you enjoyed it
What a great tune, this song always packed the dance floors. This song makes you move
You should check out the video. One of those rare instances when the drummer is the singer. This is DEFINITELY before your time. Seen these guys open up for Cheap Trick in 1980. I’m so old.😂
This is just one of those fantastic rock songs! The entire thing is a masterpiece! 👍
This song was released in December 1979 as a single. Then in 1980 it was on their Album. The song for the Romantics made it to number 49 in Billboards top 100 list.
You didn't know this was by The Romantics?! No problem at all. I think most people probably know this song but couldn't tell you who the band was! The official music video for this song is worth checking out, all high energy and fun.
My band back in the 90s did a cover of "What I Like About You" and we followed it with "I Hate Everything About You" by Ugly Kid Joe. The dance floor was crowded for both songs.😝
Hahaha! Both songs on my Spotify Sing Along playlist.
Thanks for a reaction to another great song guys. Love from Australia 🇦🇺
I'm from that era, and I always love hearing this song. (It's the only reason I came to your channel) You can't hear it and not headbang. Even I didn't know the name of the group, lol. It is now a staple at celebrations and parties as others have stated.
Some of these guys are friends of friends, band mates and acquaintances... Mainly Jimmy Marino's the drummer. After the romantics disbanded Jimmy set out to put his own band together, that's when one of my old band mates and best friend became Jimmy's drummer. Jimmy was a front man that just did lead vocals, played harmonica, played percussion and tambourine and maracas. He was quite the character to see live and my friend was a hell of a drummer who only got better. The band was called the motor City rockers. They all wore black leather and their hair was black and long. My understanding was they couldn't get a record deal so they also disbanded after playing many shows and opening for several major bands across the United States...
The only thing that would have made this better, would be if you had reacted to the video that shows them playing this. It isn’t a live video, just them miming to the studio version you just heard. But nevertheless, they put on a very entertaining performance in it!
No. MTV didn't debut until August 1, 1981, and that's where a lot of alternative bands got their first exposure.
Saw the Romantics in '86, great show.
"You're not supposed to know". Exactly! that's what makes reactions interesting is watching someone experience songs for the first time. What would be the point in reacting to something you're already familiar with?
Great band from Detroit!
The dance for this song was just jumping up and down, swinging your arms and head. From start to finish lol.
the drummer is also playing the harmonica
0:28 Asia's though bubble (the thinking to oneself thought bubble three circles not the pointy arrow) is "What are BJ's ulterior motives."
This brings back SO many memories. Ocean City, MD, '85. My girlfriend's sister. Okay; already said too much.
You are so right, this song as been used in so many commercials and movies. Even playing in the grocery stores. They were a fune band of the 80s for sure🤙😍
😆 This is a great song! BJ was on the ball! It's all fun and sincere! You just gotta sit back and enjoy! 😁
Huge hit....one of the defining songs of the 80s!!
It's commonly accepted that this is the greatest Dance Song ever.
This is a great song from my youth. I was not a huge fan of most 1980s dance music, so this was my go-to if I wanted to move or to put on for parties. The track right after this one ("She's Got Everything") carries the vibe forward with another great tune that just makes you want to get up and move. A few years later, this band had another big hit with "Talking in Your Sleep."
I’ve loved this song since the ‘80s!
Was also used as the theme song for the tv show with the same name. It stared Amanda Bynes and Jennie Garth.
B.J. good song to dedicate to your lady..Bravo Sir.
You need to watch them in their video. That drummer is singing the lead!
"Talking In Your Sleep" was their other big hit.
I played this song on my 🎸 yesterday !!! Pretty simple song to , but fun at the same time 🤙. In this song , the drummer is singing .🥁🎤
Great tune and I believe the song was done at the height of punk snd New Wave music !Done in 1979 so no one would expect you to know it except for the commercials!
Love!!! Love!!! The Romantics!!!! They reminds me of The Young Rascals of the 60's!!!!
The drummer was the lead singer in this…. Played in the clubs. Everybody got up on the dance floor. Just bouncing around silly.
The Pogo!!!!!
I always respected that the drummer sang this song.
This song is the “Bristol Stomp” of the 80s
Whole album is good. Has early Beatles vibe.
I WANT MY MTV!
So true good song!!!
Great reaction!!! Super fun song.
Just can't sit still on this one, I remember when it can't out...everybody liked it!
80's baby ... pulled straight out of 1960's garage rock ala the Troggs
This song never gets old. You gotta watch the video for it though. It makes the song so much better!! The drummer is the one singing. The harmonica part is the bomb!! Love this!!!!
Great dance song in the 1980’s! Cheers.
Very similar rhythm to r.o.c.k. in the usa by john mellencamp and dark side by john cafferty and the beaver brown band. Imo this is the best of the three. The progression is not just a basic e to a to d to a chords. Great melody for the vocals and great harmonica too. Thanks for the video.
Hello from an old oak cliff dweller back in the eighties and nineties. In the eighties this was a popular dance tune at the clubs in Dallas. Stories I could tell. You need to react to Ray Wiley Hubbard song about Mother Blues nightclub in Dallas.
Like their song " I hear the secrets that you keep when your talking in your sleep"
The crazy thing is that the drummer is singing the song.
If you've ever been to a live professional sport you've probably heard this... just like Takin Care of Business. Great track.
In 1983 I was married with 3 young sons, and my girlfriends and I used to like to go out and dance at least once a month, and sometimes twice, because NONE of our husbands were dancers, or just didn't like to dance. THIS song was one of our favorites to DANCE to, it's just a great "danceing" song. The dance floor ALWAYS got crowded when this song was played!!!
I'm old enough to not only remember when the song was first released but also to remember something that is normal now...use a song in a commercial. I believe Burger King used this song for their Big Mac in the 90s. I don't know about today, but they used to play this song at sporting events as well.
Haha.... I saw these guys live when I was in college too when their first album came out. Such fun.
You guy's, gett'in you 80's on !
I think BJ WAS JAMMIN TO THAT HIT 🤟🤟🤟👍🏻
Love this reaction! You two are so much fun! Merry Christmas! 🎄
You should watch the music videos of these songs
I’m sure you’ve heard this in various commercials.
ABC Family used to have a show called What I Like About You and they had a cover version of the song recorded for the show. You might be familiar with that, tbh
This one is really fun and catchy from circa 1984. This was heard in Marmaduke (2010), The Kissing Booth 2 (2020), Richie Rich (1994), and Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021). BJ went sour patch on you Asia haha shoot. Get better. The drummer is the singer in this. Check out The Jam--That's Entertainment sometime. BJ, this song was in a Budweiser commercial.
The Romantics were a great band. Try their tune, Rock You Up...
You guys sing that great. I sang this one karaoke... few too many times. lol
That's awesome
This came out when I was in high school...if a girl couldn't get you to dance to this, you had no pulse...
My high school dance days.....Fun stuff.
Love this song, makes me happy and energizes me every time I hear it!
Love this song!
One of the great rock bands to come out of the Motor City.
Asia/BJ--This song's been in so many ads, The Gap, Leggs, Chevy, Ford Mustang, etc..they probably made more $$ off the endorsements that the record sales!
ANOTHER GREAT DETROIT BAND!❤❤❤❤❤
BJ .. really you didn't know this was the Romantics..😂🤣.... This was the go-to song in the clubs and weddings in the '80s to get people out on the dance floor!!!
BJ was boppin! 👍
You know it!
Love the song and this couple reacting to it. -Silvia NY
If you dont move when this song plays, you are probably dead😂
Hey Asia & Bj, so good to see your reaction to this. The chord structure for this one is so common, it's not surprising that you feel as though you've heard it before. Take this musical journey with me. Gloria, by Van Morrison, R.O.C.K in the USA by John Mellencamp, The Darkside by Eddie and the Cruisers, and of course What I Like about you by The Romantics. All of these tracks just rock with the popular and identical chord progression. :)
