The first ROTLD scared me as a kid and I didn't watch it again until much later in life. Now, it's one of my all-time favorite horror films and I even got to interview Thom Mathews, which was cool.
Going the comedic route for the sequel could have worked if it had done the crazy, over-the-top approach like with Evil Dead 2, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, or Gremlins 2, but instead they went with simple slapstick.
I appreciate 3 for doing something different, but its never clicked with me. I think its because while Julie is given a full-fledged arc, all the boyfriend does is whine and mope about everything.

I think it was a bit tricky to process for kids. It was scary for me as well.
What I got and what scared me, was the change in tone midway. It goes from horror comedy to pretty pure horror in a matter of seconds. It is comedy up until they are done boarding the windows and doors. When Ernie starts to examine Freddy and Frank, and Scuz is killed, it gets dark and stays that way. The only part after that which is actual comedy is the reappearance of Tarman.

The original straddles a fine line between horror and comedy. The comedy never completely overshadows the horror.

The thing many people don't seem to remember about Rocky Horror was that originally people were genuinely making fun of the movie because they thought it sucked. Over the years the mockery ended up evolving into a genuine love for the movie, but the first time I went, when I was a teen in the 80s, the friend who took me (who'd already seen it dozens of times and subscribed to the zine) said "Yeah, the movie's kind of stupid, the whole point is the audience participation."

The first ROTLD is still, in my opinion, one of the best 80's cult classics. It's funny, it's unique, and it's genuinely scary. I still say these are one of the scariest zombie-types ever thought of, since they can talk, coordinate, and can survive literally anything less destructive than incineration. Not to mention the tragic horror of realizing _why_ they eat brains- it's the only thing that alleviates the pain of decomposing.

  • @Amber_xo_133
    @Amber_xo_133 3 года назад +3

Some of the zombie extras were paid bonus to eat real calf brains in the film. Dan O'Bannon didn't want the actors to do anything he wasn't willing to do and ate some raw calf brains first in front of them, to show that he wouldn't ask them to do anything he wasn't willing to do himself.
Miguel A. Núñez Jr. was homeless when he was cast in this movie.
Allan Trautman said in a DVD commentary that one of the main ingredients for the 'tar' of his costume was Methocel. Methocel is a thickening agent used in milkshakes and also one of the main ingredients for The Blob (1988).
They had to get approval from Lysol to have Frank spray away the stench of death with their product. "They liked the idea that Lysol would kill any conceivable odor."
Thom Mathews got his ear pierced for the role of Freddy since the character's description specifically called for one
Unlike most movies that feature the undead, The word "Zombie" is actually said in this movie by Thom Mathews' character Freddie during his discussion with Frank in the office about how the movie Night of the Living Dead (1968) couldn't have possibly been based on a true case since it depicted, "Zombies taking over the world".
The two heroes of the movie are names Burt and Ernie, obviously an ironic reference to the popular Sesame Street (1969) characters, right? Wrong. Turns out Dan O'Bannon didn't know he was using the names of the two beloved children's show's puppets (from liner notes in the Collector's Edition DVD).
Linnea Quigley wore a wig for her role as Trash.
The cemetery is called "Resurrection Cemetery."

Good short review. Glad to see these movies are not being so quickly forgotten.
Return of the Living Dead Part 1 is my favorite zombie movie of all time. Just watched it several hours ago. The Trioxin theme still creeps my out whenever I hear it. It has earned it's cult classic status.
Return of the Living Dead Part 2 has a special place for me. I admit it is not as good as the first but I think it is good as what it is. It does have some nice moments of horror and a lot that I find funny. The Blu Ray version is nice to have.
Return of the Living Dead Part 3 I have only seen a few times. Didn't really care for it. The love story is nice but the whole thing fell flat for me. It didn't have enough highs or lows to keep me interested.

There's this book, Eden, it's one of the two best zombie books I've ever read.
In it there are several types of zombie: shamblers (typical slow movers), screamers (they scream. constantly.), bookers (they full on sprint, in one case fast enough to rip a dude out of a moving car), and brains (they're semi intelligent, plan traps, set up bait, stalk. They're the worst.) And then there are hybrids, of which can be a mix of any of the previous and they are especially terrifying. That book is gnarly as hell. Opens with the main character getting bitten while asleep and realizing someone in his community let the zed in to purposefully kill him, and he's trying to figure out who before he turns. Throughout there are standalone single chapters telling short stories of random people during the outbreak, they are super intense and all harrowing.
    Highly recommend

I have a bit of a reverse opinion for 2&3. While 2 was trying to rehash the story of first movie, it does enough things differently that makes it entertaining. 3 felt like a series of bad ideas after another. Like he saw what that stuff did to that guy and still used it to bring his girlfriend back to life. Then he kept leaving her alone with people and hoping she WOULDN’T try to eat them and she does. Say what you will about the second movie, but most of the characters in that one weren’t that stupid

Pretty solid introspective, I must agree with most of it. And yes, all these had their soundtracks and other sounds altered in the re releases. Tarman’s voice is altered and sounds terrible. You’re also missing a whole song when they drive with Suicide it should be The Damned “Dead Beat Dance” I think that song is only available on the OST.

If you liked the movie i recommend you play a half life mod called they hunger. It's almost exactly like return of the living dead with intelligent and talking zombies. It also has that same 80's type of feeling to it with the zombies raising from their graves and saying BRAAINSSS. I've not made the mod but im just here to tell all of you rotld fans that this mod is basically the video game of the movie

Actually the funny thing about the MJ zombie is Brain Peck came up with the idea with one of the members of the team and the director went NOPE!
But when the electrical scene was almost done the director said "Go now go" and thus MJ got fried...again. Also my man Scuz didn't deserve to die..early.

The sequal to Return of the living dead 2 was a sign of the times of silly 80s horror comedy's so if anyone was attempting to take it seriously is a fool. The first one Was a zainy horror comedy too. Part three was just a diabolical 90s set for TV movie. It didn't resemble the first two in the slightest. I don't know why they haven't brought it back for a another entry in the last twenty years of Zombie overload,
as they could do so many things with it.

I _loved_ the second movie. Actually more than the first one (which I adore). It had me laughing more often than with the first one and I like it that it doesn't take itself too seriously as it's supposed to be a horror comedy. Naturally, taste is subjective and I do admit I may have somewhat of a bias as I do like comedies a lot more than any other genre, but I find it hard to consider the second movie as a lesser one than the first. Lighter on the horror side, yes, but definitely not bad at all. I have yet to watch the third movie, however.
