i worked at magic mountain, we see so many trains coming in i feel most of us would of noticed something, at least id hope. the ride ops for this ride were really on it and paying attention
Having been a former employee (Beast Operator) of King's Island I can attest that they do train their staff very well and safety is number 1. Rule number one if you suspect any problems you hit that E-stop.

@suny123boy1 I live close to Kings Island, and was going several time a year while it was there. When there is serious accident it is on the news, and everyone is talking about it. I can tell you every accident, and death which happened there in order. There in no way they would have kept a ride open which caused that many broken necks. That's just crazy. It was very rough. I rode it two times, and that was too much for me!

I remember riding this ride shortly after it came out and saying it’s a little rough is an understatement. It beats you senseless. Imagine going down a pothole filled dirt road at 60 mph in a shopping cart.. that’s what it was.

You're welcome! I'm just thankful to have saved the lives I did. I unfortunately quit my job after this incident. I was terrified of what I had seen that day and I felt so bad for the people who were badly hurt.
If this doesn’t show just how important ride operators are, I don’t know what would. As safe as roller coasters are, accidents like this can happen, and if the ride operator hadn’t decided to yell for e-stop first and actually assess the injuries second, I honestly think that the support beams would have snapped, and, well, I feel like a lot of the car could have either derailed or been sent plummeting to the ground and most likely killing multiple people. That ride operator is a hero, both of them are.
I just watched the video on the Superman freefall tower accident which is a perfect counterexample to this one; loader called for e-stop on seeing the failure, and the operator did /not/ hit it that second, and serious injury resulted. It may have been that the park had an official policy of contacting a supervisor before e-stopping a ride, or that may merely have been the de facto policy.
The video concluded that the injury was the result of the operator's inaction, but I refuse to blame them; it wasn't me in the booth. I will praise these operators, however.
This is also why properly training ride operators is incredibly important. Too many amusement parks, especially in the early 2000s hired young inexperienced operators and paid them like crap. Six Flags was one of these and is why you see so many accidents from them in the early 2000s

The takeaway from this incident should be that all operators on all the stations should have e-stop buttons. Luckily the shouting was heard in time for this incident.
One would also expect active sensors on the trains to automatically report about any unexpected g-forces. A smartphone with multiple acceleration sensors and even a gyroscope costs less than $100 today and that includes big screen and battery. Surely you could add a sensor or two to the train for safety and QA purposes alone. That would also automatically catch worn bearings that cause heavy vibration, too.

They probably had weak necks or other medical conditions my freind went on it and his neck was fine.
I rode it when I was about 40. I’m sure the ride caused far mar spinal fractures than we will ever know. The ride shook me so bad that I couldn’t even see for a good part of the ride. I would have never have ridden it again...

My dad and I were in line to ride this when it happened. I remember someone telling all of us that the ride was closed for the day and everyone walked out of line. We didn’t know what happened until it was on the news later. I still think about that sometimes.

This was the roughest Roller Coaster I've ever ridden in my life. I had neck pain for almost a week after riding it. Instead of coming off the coaster excited and wanting more, I stepped off and refused to ride that death trap again.

So impressed by the ride operator who called for the e-stop and the one who pushed it. I used to teach human factors in aviation and at the end with machinery issues it usually comes down to a human making a quick correct decision to save lives 💛
I was the operator that shut it down that day. My manager and I were about to hop in the 3rd train and test ride it before the injured train returned to the ready brakes. They screamed at us that people were hurt. That’s when the call was made to 911 and we parked that train on the lift so we could get the injured riders off in the station. After we found out what had actually happened later on, a wood coaster maintenance man told me that if we would have taken that test ride, we would have surely been killed.

As the SoB failure demonstrates, you have to be extremely careful when you strengthen one part of a structure to insure that you don't inadvertently transfer excessive loads to weaker points. In the mid-1990s, a girder on a highway bridge in Boston was damaged by a truck. The girder was repaired by the heat straightening method. Just over two years later, the girders on the other end of the bridge started to fail due to the transfer of loads from the earlier repairs. Fortunately, the failure was detected in time and the bridge closed.
"Ignore it and fix it in the off-season" is what my highschool does for any issue.
Blame the unions for that. You shouldn't need an expensive union guy for very minor things. Tho unions changed the country for many people.
My mom broke her nose on the beast. It was too tough, she hit her face on the hand bar and blood everywhere all over other passengers and herself. She’s ok now :)

Apparently rougher than the Mean Streak at Cedar Point before its renovation. Virtually everyone who rode it had back pain. I can't imagine how bad it'd have to be for it to break someone's neck.
I worked at PKI when I was a teenager back in the early 90s. The training was way more intense than you would think. Even on the customer service side of it. I remember bumping into a hand dryer and automatically saying "excuse me" in an otherwise empty bathroom after having sat through so many guest service training sessions.
More to the point of safety though I drove a Parking Lot Tram. Sometimes during a long hot day in order to get a break operators would claim that there was something wrong with the tram and it needed to be checked out by maintenance. The supervisors knew that's what was going on but you were still allowed to go back and have maintenance check out the problem without question.
I have to imagine it was for two reasons.
1) What If there really was something wrong with the tram?
And
2) if you really needed a break that badly go on back the maintenance for 10 or 15 minutes and relax.
We worked long hours too. Especially on the weekend when it was extremely common to have an all day shift. I remember once coming in at 7:30 in the morning and not clocking back out until 2:30 the next morning. It also wasn't uncommon during the summer months to lose at least one driver per day to some sort of heat-related illness even though ice water and towels that have been soaked in ice-water to wrap around your neck were freely available all day. I won't go into the reasons for this other than it could get extremely hot on that massive black parking lot but it also had to do with how the two types of individual trams were constructed as well.
So Kings Island may have pushed their employees hard but they also trained them very well considering the type they also trained them very well considering it was mostly younger people working seasonal jobs.
One shouldn't expect a wooden coaster that travels 78mph to be gentle, and the older people should have known better. I was 17 when I rode SoB and it was brutal. It's just a souped up version of The Beast, which also beat you to death, but on a smaller scale. I also never rode it with the loop, so maybe it was less intense after the changes were made?
I've rode this coaster when I was 18 and man it was ROUGH!! The entire time I kept wishing it to be over because it was nonstop violent shaking and jerking, like your organs became jumping beans. When it was over I remember wondering if that was normal and why everyone seemed to love it so much. Regardless it was awful, I never rode it again.
That’s the best description I’ve seen, it was a miserable ride. It felt like my brain was shaking going through the double helix. I’d like to know how many people sustained concussions from it because I was out of it the rest of the day. One of the only rides I never wanted to ride again!
Honestly just “The Beast” is a rough ride it’s tolerable but I get people who don’t like it I genuinely couldn’t image the pain of riding on the “Son Of Beast”
Yes, for a wooden coaster, it's completely normal. Which is why people with spinal conditions or other issues shouldn't ride these rides.

The Beast has quite a few helix and I just went last week, and let me tell you, I was scared for my life. The ride is falling apart and is scary as fuck.
@@Asherrr The Beast will always be my favorite rollercoaster. I used to go to King's Island at least once almost every summer when I was a kid/teenager but I moved to the other side of the country for work as an adult. Well, one trip back home to visit the parents and other relatives in the area, it was in October. The park was doing their annual Halloween Horror Nights (or whatever they call it) through the whole month. Let me tell you, riding The Beast with absolutely NO lights on the track anywhere in the middle of the night was one of the scariest (and awesome) experiences I've ever had! Any rollercoaster is fun when they turn the track lights off, but The Beast takes on a whole new personality that makes it a unique experience that you can't get on any other ride. It still remains my #1 favorite rollercoaster to this day and it saddens me that I live so far away from it now :(

I remember riding this when I was younger. Even as a healthy young kid, this ride was still painful to experience, really took all the fun out of it. The difference in camera shake between 4:50 and 6:21 is unreal. Good to see they've improved their designs.
Glad you pointed this out, I hadn’t noticed. Although they’re different coasters, it still brings into perspective for those of us fortunate enough to not ride SOB (love that acronym btw 😂) just how rough this ride was.
the camera shake could be caused by the rider himself holding the camera. On the Mystic Timbers footage, the camera is mounted to the train. On the SOB footage, it looks like the rider is holding the camera, which would contribute to a lot of the camera shake. I'm sure the ride didn't help though
@@FinesseBTW i feel like people who record rollercoasters should use a mount. its a win win because its steadier (like u said), and that however you mount it, i feel like its harder to lose the cam than even holding it firmly with your hand.

After I heard about all the injuries caused by this ride, being in my early 20's, I figured I absolutely HAD to ride it! I rode it once, with the loop, and I'm not surprised it broke peoples' necks. If you were to turn your head at the wrong time, it could absolutely do what they claimed it did. I had a pretty bad headache after riding it too! Funny thing, my buddy, who worked for Custom Coasters International, told me that PKI had asked them to bid on fixing the coaster, or finishing it (It's been 20 years, so I'm a little foggy). They turned it down because, and I quote, "It will never be safe". He then told me to "please, never ride it". I do remember him saying those two things clearly, though! BTW, PKI did have their own engineering department at the time, and they had built several rides themselves, most notably The Beast.
Given how successful and long-lived The Beast has been compared to this, they would honestly have been better off building Son of Beast themselves from the start. They poured a ton of work into shoring up and smoothing out the ride (although the Gerstlauer trains switched to after the 2006 incident wound up negating the latter) but it was never able to fully cancel out the fundamental flaws of RCCA's shoddy design and construction work.
RCCA was a sleazy, shady, underbidding corner-cutting company.

@@_.neajah.__ Yes, it is a rule, but that doesn't necessarily mean people follow it. The woman could have been early on in her pregnancy and thus not showing or she could have lied about her condition to get on the ride. Or usually it's considered rude to ask someone if they're pregnant, so maybe the ride operator didn't think asking her was a good idea. There's a lot of possibilities as to why this happened.

Don't know how I found this video but I rode this coaster back in the mid 2000's and had never been so sick afterwards because of how bad it beat my head around. I remember feeling literally like I had been given a horrible beat down or something. My head was pounding so bad I got sick in the bathroom, but I also discovered dip-n-dots afterwards so I call it a wash. I do remember wondering though what was wrong with me that a ride made me feel so bad, thanks to this video now I know!
I was always terrified of Roller coasters. Knowing only vague details about accidents, I thought it was very common for the rides to break and people to be hurt. Now that I’ve seen these videos, I know about the factors and backgrounds, and I’m more confident about riding!

Same! I was never able to ride large coasters until I got on anti anxiety medication and learned a lot about the technical details of how rides function, and getting to enjoy coasters has been such a worthwhile journey
For each accident, there are new safety procedures added to make sure it doesn’t happen again
One of the reasons the rollercoaster industry is safe in my opinion is whenever an accident happens, they look at what happened and do what they can to make sure it never happens again. I know that sometimes this isn't possible as people will get on a rollercoaster with a medical condition they aren't even aware of and they die because of it.
Yeah overall.... but as far as that company.... Same company made a ride that was close to me in Texas called the Rattler, this ride came out 8 years before son of beast, and let me tell you that ride had so many problems. First off it originally had a TWISTING record holding drop. The ride was designed with a smaller drop originally but they forced the designer to change it last minute to get the record. Okay so that didn't last long people got hurt and they removed the twisting drop and lowered the height and guess what people were still getting hurt. then they basically halved the height of the first drop and it was still very rough. The funny thing the first time I rode it, it was my first "big boy" roller coaster no idea if it was the twisting drop or the reduced one, but it was one of the first two versions for sure and much later after I had rode other coaster like the old texas gaint and thinking how smooth the texas giant was and that was compared to the 3rd version of the rattler.. I can't honestly believe they were even allowed to build another piece of crap after the rattler.... Luckly the rattler was converted to RMC and is good now (I haven't rode it yet). One more thing, meanstreak had tallest wood record, rattler took it, then son of beast took it from the rattler, its almost as if record height wood coaster is a bad idea lol.

I’ve seen many accidents and incidents on the news here in California in the past 20 years at amusement parks.
Many occurred st Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and Six Flags.
@@GTVAlfaMan How many accidents? You have to consider the parks get millions of visitors yearly so even twenty accidents wouldn't be that much. Also, are they all Rollercoaster related? Rollercoasters aren't the only things at amusement parks that can cause accidents.
I remember going sometime before 2006; had to be 02-05, I'd imagine, and riding SOB w/ loop. It was so rough it was insane; being a young kid, I just thought I had a weak kid body, but likely it helped dampen some of the forces involved. I swear you'd pull muscles in your neck just trying to keep your head from whipping around.
It was still awesome to ride as a kid, but my takeaway was the ride quality; I barely remember the loop!
My very first roller coaster ride was on Son of Beast. We were going up the hill and the ride team hit the emergency stop as we hit the top of the ride. We never got a clear explanation as to why the ride was paused for around 10 minutes, someone said that there was a jacket hanging partially out of a car. But I remember as we went down the hill how much we were thrown around in the car. It was EXTREMELY rough and I had bruises on my arm from where I bummed it into the side of car. My sister and I were just slamming into each other. The smaller Beast is way more fun and less painful.
You can always tell who's honest by who corrects their mistakes. Thanks for the updated video. Imagine what would have happened if the train *REALLY* stopped in the helix.
These kinds of accidents are fascinating, I'm especially interested in specifically what went wrong and why, and you really hit it out of the park with this video in that regard. I'll definitely be checking out the rest of your videos!
It’s such a shame because we were all SO excited when they announced this ride. If you don’t know, The Beast is a glorious coaster. It has personality, history, and is set in gorgeous landscape. So the idea that they were gonna make a coaster in the same spirit was exciting. Everyone else was building these new, “innovative” coasters and I loved the thought of a ride built in the classic style. Silly me. It was all a marketing ploy.
Hey, let’s compete with other parks building new coasters, put a TON of effort into marketing, and ride the coattails of the most popular ride in the park…. But let’s skimp on the cost of building it. What could go wrong?
Hats off to the ride operators who stopped the ride. Literally zero KI fans were surprised when they finally closed that ride. It was awful. It beat the hell out of riders. But the fact that it had all those issues for all that time and a major disaster came down to the operators making a quick decision is infuriating.
Major Props to the ride operator!! Who knows how fatal that accident could've been!

I rode SOB in 2008. After the 1st drop into the double helix, not a single scream of fun was made. One word. Pain. I've ridden many "rough" wooden coasters. SOB out classed them all. You could feel it in your chest 5 minutes after you got off the ride.
That's what a wooden coaster is all about. The thrill of living through the suffering.

I rode SoB only once, in 2005. The ride was so violent that I had to sit on the ground, outside the ride exit, for a good hour so I could get my bearings. I felt like I had been in an agonizing car crash, and my mental state was so jarred by it that I began screaming AT the ride that someone should burn it to the ground. It was a nightmare.

A vertical loop, probably not. A heart line roll/corkscrew: just look at Mind Blower/Hades 360/Goliath at SFGAm)

I grew up during SOB’s heyday, and I never trusted it lol. There was a lot of conflict between Kings Island customers about it because lots of teens and young adults (and even some people over 40) saw it as a “tough and cool” ride, while others where concerned about the safety and talked about the injuries. I was a kid at the time and would never have been allowed to ride it anyway, but I was always terrified of it and never wanted to ride it even when I could LOL. My older sister went on it all the time and I used to wait for her terrified the whole time. I’m glad I never rode it tbh
I’ve been on SOB about 10 times, with and without the loop. It was very very rough and very very fast. I’m glad I didn’t get hurt and at the same time I’m glad I was able to experience it.

I liked the Son Of Beast but damn it was a rough ride from the start. Props to that operator noticed something wrong or there would have been a lot more injuries and maybe deaths that day.. I always looked at the operators as being just kids that weren't really into their job...I will not look at them like that anymore.
I went on this ride ONCE. As my brother in law said "The ride was disturbing" and thankfully this was the last ride of the day as being 6'3 and in the front car, my knee's were hammered and I almost needed some sort of help to get off the ride and back to the parking lot. This along with Tomb Raider were the 2 roughest rides I've ever been on (as someone who has been from Cali to Florida and now Northern Kentucky). Tomb Raider actually left a bruise on my chest and back from the restraining harness.

My sister went to King's Island for a field trip in high school back in either April-May 2005 or 2006. She could take one guest with her and she chose my boyfriend, who she was really close to as a kid.
I'll never forget them getting back that night, only to see that all the hair was missing on one side of my sister's head. They had been on this ride and because it was SO rough, they had been very forcefully thrown to one side of the cart they were sitting in together. They then suddenly whipped around a curve, snapping my sister's head to the side and causing her hair to get caught in something, ripping it out by the roots. She was absolutely covered in bruises and was incredibly shaken up and in pain for days afterward.
Even now, nearly 20 years later, my boyfriend brings it up every time we see mention of King's Island. It is horrifying to think that the owners of King's Island knew years before her injuries that this ride was dangerous but there wasn't any kind of warning to potential riders. At the time, my sister was about 5'2" and probably didn't even weigh 90 pounds. After watching this, I'm surprised she even survived the damned thing.

I only rode Son of Beast twice. It still had the loop at the time and I remember the first time I rode it with my mom it was smooth and a nice ride. We decided to run back around and get in line again because we liked it so much but the second time was a mistake. We got off the second run and I was practically sobbing because it was so rough that it gave me a migraine and my neck hurt. I didn't think about much at the time because I was only 13 or 14 years old but I remember spending a good 3 to 5 hours trying to get the migraine and pain to go away. I think we left park early after that because we were in so much pain that we couldn't stand to go on any more of the rides that day.

Wow. That employee might have saved 20 lives. He should have been given a HUGE bonus. His yelling to do an EStop saved an entire car of people. And saved them from several giant lawsuits
Wow, I forgot a lot of this info! I rode it with my mom when I was in middle school and thought it was pretty fun, although I remember her saying she had a few bruises and didn’t want to ride it after the two times in a row that we did. Knowing more now, I’m so glad she insisted we not ride anymore! Moms are the best!! 🥰

I rode the Son of Beast the year it opened. It was so rough I never did it again. And I was in my early twenties at the time. The original Beast, still operating at the park, has a reputation for being rough and it is my, and many others, all time favorite roller coaster. If I had to guess, they wanted Son to be rough too... just not quite that rough. I could see them overlooking some issues because of this though. The Beast is rough as hell and people LOVE it.
With all the work Kings Island put in over the offseason for this season's 50th anniversary, The Beast is fairly smooth.
I was there that day and was on the pass in the back seat that broke the track, we heard it snap! The next car got it the worse and we watched as the ambulances showed up to take care of the people that got really hurt, I had a migraine for the rest of the day after that, it whipped our asses!

I would love to RMC, just once, do a hybrid along the lines of a traditional Woodie and just maximize the speed and smoothness to get some quality air time.
I haven't been on an RMC i haven't liked, and I've loved the overhaul of Woodies that went passed their prime.

I distinctly remember this one. I rode it as a kid, probably 2004-ish, give or take a year. I remember my dad asked if I wanted to ride it again, and I said no because it hurt so bad.

I rode this when I was young, to say it was rough was an understatement, but I was a kid, so I didn't care. Still love the beast, forever one of my fav coasters (can't wait for Orion!)
I rode it when it first came out. It hurt so bad that my friend and I held each other literally crying begging for it to stop. We were bruised up, but luckily had just turned 21 so we drank beer and felt better lol
I rode this ride years ago (I must have been in middle school) and on one of helixes the gforces pushed my upper body down so much that my entire upper body bent forwards. It hurt for a few months but I never thought anything too much of it because I didn’t really know any better. Needless to say if you never got a chance to ride this ride maybe it’s for the best.
I rode this while it still had the loop at a teenager. Never again! It beat me senseless. I can absolutely see how it broke necks!
I rode this back in June of 2008 when my mom and I were visiting her sister. We got on later in the afternoon. The lap bar was pushed down and we left the loading/unloading station. This ride was extremely rough. I had to push down my right hand on the lap bar and push my left hand against the seat in front of me. My head got knocked around so much. We got off and I had like a very small headache. We flew back home to FL the next day and bruises developed on my shoulders, sides of my face and left ear from all of the rattling. In my years of riding roller coasters, that was the most uncomfortable and painful experience I’ve had on one. 😬

My buddy is studying to become an Engineer and Son of Beast is cited multiple times in the college textbooks as big "DO NOTS"

Before King’s Island tore it down, all you could see from the top of the Diamondback, was the old abandoned remains of Son of Beast off in the distance. It was so eerie lol. Even though no one died on it, there’s just something creepy about an old dilapidated wooden roller coaster.
My favorite part of all of this is when the state came in to inspect it, they said, "we're not roller coaster engineers." Even now, somehow, 11 non-engineers, are supposed to inspect over 4000 rides and their boss' primary job function is to tell you how to grow corn.
Actually, ever since the Fireball incident they always *are* engineers, and even before that they _were_ overall meticulous.
As for why it's the department of agriculture inspecting things in the first place, it's because it snowballed out of their responsibility for overseeing county fairs (which at their core are farm festivals).
The real problem here was that, well, you know who _else_ weren't roller coaster engineers? Or at least, were so bad and sleazy that they barely count as roller coaster engineers?

I rode Son of Beast when it still had the loop. I don't know if it was normally this way on other days, but the day I rode it, there were NO lap restraints, not even a flimsy seatbelt. I alerted a worker that I didn't have a lap restraint. He said it was okay because none of the cars had any either. He told me to just hold on to the bar on top the car in front of me. It was terrifying. And it was so rough it was far from fun. I was worried about the loop with no restraint over my lap. But the force from the loop was strong and kept me in. However, before the first hilll I reached to grab the bar on the car in front of me like the worker said to. I could barely reach it and couldn't get a good grip (I have really tiny hands). I was never so glad to get off a ride in my life. I have heard things about no or non-functional restraints. And to think I was told it was safe and normal not to have one. I wrote KI several times about that day and never received a response. I was so happy the day I heard they destroyed this death machine.
That's an absolutely shocking account. I am horrified reading the experiences with this roller coaster and that's one of the worst!
I chipped a tooth, popped a vessel in my eye, and injured my spinal cord on this ride. Fortunately the damage wasn’t permanent, and I healed up just fine, but when we reached the end of the ride I couldn’t breathe and was mostly unable to move or speak. I could move my fingers and that was about it. Mind you, at the time I was only eleven or twelve and met the height requirement, but that said I’m surprised the employees let me go on, given how intense this ride is.
I always heard about the problems with that ride but always wondered how many minor injuries, (that were never reported), happened because of that damn Indiana Jones style coaster they had. Every time I went to that park people would be limping away from that ride. I only rode it once and at some point the cars would slam side to side repeatedly and it tweaked my back.

Used to work there. Was there for this incident and more and I can tell you the issues were for all kinds of reasons. Maintenance crews knew there were issues but green lit it anyways saying it wasn’t “too bad” and then us the operators figured out how to blow the breaks so that the train ran threw through and hit the loop at full speed instead of slowing down. These along with some other issues that came from that wooden monstrosity caused major issues some that ended in some pretty serious injuries.
