Sanemi is a fundamentally kind and sweet person, but extremely traumatized by what he had to do to his mother. The idea of having to face that kind of pain again is what creates the extreme violence he's capable of: he wants to destroy every possibility of him or anyone else having to live that again.
When Genya told him he ate demons the only thing in Sanemi's head was "eating demons sounds like something that could absolutely turn him into a demon completely. Literally dying now would be a better fate than that". In a twisted and broken way he was still protecting his little brother as good as he felt he could.
And in Muichiro he evidently feels respect as we can see in how he addresses him, and I think he must feel a strong bond as Muichiro has similar trauma in his past (multiple Hashira share this ofc). All in all beautifully written characters imo.
I love sanemj as a character but I don’t think he’s a good big brother to Genya. But I also think the way he acts with Muichiro is the version he WANTS to be but there’s so much baggage between him and Genya that it’s impossible for them to even communicate

Actually working together to respect each others decisions and help each other heal. There's a reason tanjiro and nezuko have a much better relationship than the shinazugawa siblings do. And there's a reason they're shown to be doing a better job at healing from their respective traumas than the shinazugawa brothers. Ik Sanemi is trying to protect his life but Sanemi's way of protecting his brother is too rude and extreme. I really feel sad for Genya. Imagine all your family members were death and the your only remaining brother called you useless and demotivated you for what you're doing? Sanemi want Genya live a happy and normal life while him being a hashira... but man... HOW??Genya saw how his mother and his other siblings were killed right in front of you and his brother is asking him to live a normal life? I somehow understand what Genya is feeling. He wants to revenge for his mother and siblings too even if he was to eat demons and couldn't use any breathing. Why Sanemi didn't try to understand his brother's feeling too?
Sanemi said it himself, if Genya chose a normal life, he will the one protecting Genya's family from demons and the neighborhood where Genya lives.
Sanemi doesnt want the past being repeated in which he killed his mother. he doesnt want to kill Genya cause he knows if Genya consumes too much demons, he'll became one sooner.
ik He's harsh, rude...but if it's the only way to make Genya hate him and leave demon slayer corpse, even it will hurts him in the future, he will do it just to see his brother a live.
and bruh...Muzan and upper rank demons are deadly for human...if u dont have breathing, u will die at instant, even if u say u eat demons but that wont make u stronger cause we know upper ranks have great skills with their weapons so theres no need to understand Genya's feeling. Sanemi is an hashira. He already faced a lot of demons. Genya almost died during fight with upper moon 4 even hes on demon mode. So in a situation theyre in, Sanemi's no time in understanding Genya's feelings. Sanemi only thinks one thing about his brother, which is 'to protect him'

People who are hating on Sanemi so today I will answer them :
1. Why not Sanemi could have talked Genya to not join the Demon Slayer Corps ?
Sanemi wanted genya to hate him because Sanemi thought that if he died one day then Genya would definitely take revenge for his brother, which Sanemi definitely not wanted. Sanemi wanted Genya to live peaceful live that's why Sanemi wanted Genya to hate him.
2. Sanemi was about to blind Genya, which is not justified at all ?
Here my theory is, Sanemi just wanted to scare genya because i think Sanemi knew the whole time that tanjiro was there. But How can I so sure ?
Because No one was able to find Nakime's eyeball in the entire series because it was made for the purpose of hiding, but Sanemi found it just by a slight sound. Do you really think sanemi wouldn't know tanjiro was there ? Come on Bro, He is literally Hashira.
I think Sanemi was checking whether Tanjiro will save Genya or not if he attacks Genya. And when tanjiro came to protect genya, Sanemi sure that Tanjiro will protect Genya
3. Why Sanemi was beating tanjiro If Sanemi was sure that Tanjiro would protect Genya ?
I think Sanemi was beating Tanjiro on purpose. Sanemi knew that tanjiro hate Sanemi ( But tanjiro didn't ) and tanjiro is good friend of genya. So, Sanemi was beating Tanjiro which make Genya convinced that Sanemi is a bad person and other reason is, Sanemi thought tanjiro will say bad things about Sanemi to genya which definitely made genya hate Sanemi. That's why he suddenly allowed genya to go to the same training as tanjiro. So that, Tanjiro can say bad thing about Sanemi.
Sanemi lost everyone he care for like His siblings, Mother, His friend, His crush So he doesn't want to loose his only brother.
4. Becoming a demon slayer could also be Genya's personal choice so Sanemi was interfaring ?
First of all, Being a Demon Slayer cannot be anyone's choice. All the slayer become Demon Slayer for some purpose. And Genya's purpose to demon slayer is the same as Sanemi, "To Protect and Care his Only Brother" which Sanemi not wanted at all. He doesn't want genya to risk his life.
