    Great comparison, and very nice playing. I own the DSL40C, and run through a 4x12 it gives much more expensive amps a run for the money. I have a 2555x Silver Jubilee that I love just as much. When I compare the two, run through the same cab, it's actually the Silver Jubilee that has the warmer clean and the livelier crunch. That said, both sound great. The DSL is an absolute steal for the money.

    I preferred the sound from the DSL too. More importantly though, great choice of songs. Particularly like the rendition of The Wind Cries Mary, I'm going to have to learn to play that 🙂

    I always liked the DSL 40 but could not make my mind up on which one I wanted, think there are a couple of models,
    any way got a Peavey classic 30 instead and love it, great playing as always, think the DSL sounded better to me.

    Jubilee sounds more defined and has more clarity. The DSL has a thicker tone, but I would pick the clarity for muddier guitars.

    • @GraniteSoundtrack

      I think the Layla bit was better defined. The other passages weren't very much better defined sounding in my opinion.

    DSL all the way. Richer, more depth. The Jubilee sounded brittle. I have an Origin 20 combo, it gets a lot of flack but when you realise you have to approach it like a plexi and drive the power tubes it sounds pretty decent for anything up to classic rock. The speaker lets it down, it can sound a bit boxy (never tried the 50 variant which has a 12" as opposed to the 10" in the 20 but I believe it sounds better. Its never going to be a JCM 800 (without modding, which can be done - you loose the tube on the FX loop to be used as a drive stage) but then it wasnt designed to be.

      Yeh im gunna have to spend some time messing with this jubilee now otherwise ill want to sell it because it does sound brittle compared to the dsl - glad the room sound came across straight from the 57.

    Yeah! I own a DSL40 first gen. I’ve had it for 10 years + and I still figure out more great tones. There are some pros that speak of them as inferior but I think it’s the foreign made thing plus most of us want to seem cool by having bragging rights level gear.

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  Год назад

      You had to do any servicing etc on him yet? Yeh they do get spoken down on quite abit but such awesome amps. Huge range, easily gotten hold of on used market generally pretty good condition. And versatile and loud enough for 90% of situations. Plus its the real deal with tubes what more could you want haha.

    • @GraniteSoundtrack
      @GraniteSoundtrack Год назад +1

      @@Paul-D Honestly, when I first had it, there was a power tube issue. Strange noise and it was determined that it had a faulty tube. But the warranty took care of that very smoothly and the tubes were replaced. Other than that, I haven't had any issues. But I should say that I don't really gig. Which is a shame and oh how do I miss it! I play at church often, but that's not nearly the wear and tear that gigging will do, so keep that in mind.

  • @MrUmandMrEr
    @MrUmandMrEr Год назад

    Hey Pauly, strat-wise it sounds like you just need cut some treble and presence on the Jubilee. Maybe mids too. (It has a more active eq than other Marshalls) Also many people prefer V30 speakers paired with it. Mine sounds awesome with the Texas Special pickups in my strat…just got to tame it, and always use full power!

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  Год назад +1

      This is a timely comment, just yesterday i swapped the cab to one with vintage 30s. And that very bright frequency of the jubilee has been tamed massively! Im still playing but man what a difference speakers make especially to a fussy amp like the jubilee!

    The dsl seemed more rounded and the head a bit more sparkle, to me. If I was playing to myself in the lounge, I think I'd pick dsl every time. It was warmer and cosier. But if I was gigging or band jamming, maybe the extra sizzle would cut through better.
    The head being twice the price makes the dsl the easy choice on ££, but on sound I could turn the treble down and live with either.

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  Год назад

      Im just so surprised how much fuller the dsl is. Supposed to be the under dog hahah. I had the treble and presence set reasonably low on the jubilee ill have to try it even lower, in fairness the treble knob on the jubilee is very very sensitive so it may work

    • @rumy6871
      @rumy6871 Год назад

      Nice video. A good pair of studio headphones or monitors does it justice. I preferred the jubilee as someone who mixes for bands and has done live sound. The jubilee has a nice cut and midrange that will sit well in the mix. The jubilee eq is powerful and different from other Marshalls. For example, if you want more low end turn the bass up to 7 or 8. If you want it fatter overall, turn up the input gain to 7. For a gig, I would prefer the jubilee head and the extension for ease transport. The DSL sounds fine but it is on the muddy side. I think it is a real steal for the price. If the DSL was all my budget allowed, I would get an eq pedal and put it in the loop to get better clarity. This video presents a strong case for no wrong answers.

    So im currently trying to decide between one of the expensive studio models, the jtm or silver, or just getting the far less expensive dsl40cr. Here in America, the studios are outrageous prices! On sale, they are still $1500 for the combo. The dsl40 is on sale for $729 right now! I have a jtm ordered, but I'm thinking about canceling for the much less expensive and probably more versatile, dsl amps? I will probably never get a brand new jtm studio for $1500 again, though? The dsl is a staple and can be had all day long. But maybe i don't even need a jtm studio? The dsl certainly more than held its own against its bigger brother there! Im actually not surprised as i think the dsl amps always sound great.

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  3 месяца назад +1

      It always amazes me how much they cost in the states! The studio series is regularly on sale here for less then £850. The upside is over there you tend to have better amp techs too haha.
      Is volume a consideration for you? The DSL will definitely be alot more usable at home then the JTM. But I’m confident the JTM will sound better too. If you can afford the US price on the JTM now and the loudness is less of an issue…. I would stick with the JTM order - itll be worth it.

      And the DSL was on sale brand new at £299 this xmas just gone at guitarguitar !

    • @robbyclark6915
      @robbyclark6915 3 месяца назад

      Well, volume is not something I'm going to base my decision on because I have plenty of opportunity to be LOUD here at home. These days I tend to be more interested in a quality clean tone I can add pedals to if I choose. I have a fender deluxe that I play clean 75% of the time as well as my vox ac15. The main reason I opted for the jtm was the clean tones of it. However, when buying a Marshall, there's always that temptation to just get down and dirty! Even though I really don't play like that anymore. Getting older now and much more mellow in my 50s than just 5 years ago. Probably stay with the jtm for now at that $450 discount, and pick up a dsl40 in the used for $500 or so in a few months. Once my wife has forgotten I just bought a Marshall a few months ago.......
      Thanks for the reply, btw! I always appreciate another opinion.

  • @nostro1001
    @nostro1001 Год назад

    Well, I don't think it's so clear cut, but given the price differential without even considering speaker/cab, that should seal the deal.
    First up I found the jubilee to do a poor job of Jimi, to the point it was almost hurting my ears; just way too bright and harsh. I found it was great next up for RHCP, the dsl a bit too muted with not enough top, although some eq would sort that easily.
    Overall, I thought the dsl sounded better or with immaterial difference on most tracks.
    Then again the jubilee is a notoriously picky amp & that's not considered to be a great all rounder.
    Dial it in and we all know what it can do!

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  Год назад +1

      Yeh if you want to go anywhere near clean with the jubilee especially with single coils it really is almost unpleasant and uninspiring. The DSL does a much better job of that, although not getting near a good fender clean i guess.
      And exactly, get the jubilee in its happy place and its an excellent example of marshall sound just dont expect anything to far either side of that haha
