Situated on a sprawling 50-acre property with stunning views of vineyards, Philip Island, and Western Port Bay, the house is positioned atop a hill, exposing it to the coastal climate.
The house is conceptualized as an abstraction of a typical Australian farmhouse. It is spread out over a single level and features a large, sheltered courtyard garden at its center, serving as a refuge from the expansive surroundings.
Despite its size, the house is designed to accommodate varying numbers of occupants, with the ability to expand and contract as needed. Three-quarters of the house can be closed off when not in use, maintaining spatial intimacy for the permanent residents.
The design incorporates thick, planted walls that project into the landscape, framing views and guiding circulation. The roof is sleek and singular, while the walls are elemental, contributing to the integration of the house with its surroundings.
Every room offers views of a garden, and existing trees influenced the design and siting of the house. The property features various water capture and storage systems, including concrete water tanks, which are integrated into the landscape as functional elements like birdbaths and ponds.
The house is self-sufficient in terms of water, capturing all domestic water from the large roof and storing it in concrete tanks. This sustainable approach is integrated into the design and landscaping, reinforcing the connection between the architecture and the natural environment.
Overall, the design emphasizes a harmonious relationship between the built environment and the surrounding landscape, providing both functionality and aesthetic appeal while embracing principles of sustainability.
