I'm working on the Rota Jumper using cheap Lion Brand acrylic yarn. I just fell in love with the color of it, even though I thought I didn't like acrylic. But you know what, I'm really enjoying knitting with it and I love how it's coming out! And I was thinking about it and some of my favorite store-bought sweaters are acrylic so maybe I need to give acrylic another chance. The color is "claret" and it's a super dark garnet red color. Your April cardigan came out so beautifully!

If you like the style and fit of the dress then you could over-dye it with a dark brown, maroon/burgundy, dark green, navy or black. Red used to be a favorite color of mine until it was a required uniform color. Any time I’ve had an event that I had to go out and buy a dress or outfit for, I never find anything and end up simply throwing together something easy from stuff in my closet then dress it up with accessories or jewelry and with great shoes.

I think Camilla Valley Farm is Ontario based and stocks Harrisville Highland cones, which come in a whole rainbow of colors unlike Daylights/Nightshades!

Such a fun ep ☺️ loved hearing about all your yarn finds, and the Shrike cardigan is looking divine 😍 I’m also testing the Tendreil Sweater for Sophie, but I’m not as far along as you, definitely taking advantage of that long deadline 😅

I have a small order arriving from Galt House of Yarn. I was tempted to buy some Peer Gynt or Sunday for a sweater I want to knit but I held off. Maybe I'll need to wait to see it in person 😊

I've been listening to this episode bit by bit over a hectic 24 hours but I just wanted to chime in and say that you could rent a dress for about half the price of a new one, if that seems at all reasonable. There is at least one full service dress rental place in Toronto (The Fitzroy) that is open seven days a week for fittings and may be worth it if you want to have a lux experience and not having an extra dress in your closet.

I've looked but the price of a rental is really high. I might end up buying and then gifting to a friend.

The first time I used sewn bind off was when I was trying to figure out whether I knew enough about knitting (which I learned as a child but just the basics) to make garments so I was making a vest with no pattern whatsoever to test my ability to figure out armholes and pick up stitches. I used youtube tutorials at times and I found this bind off... It was advertised as "tubular" but I think it was mislabelled because it didn't have set up rows, it just had the instructions to actually bind off. I thought, this is nice, but the edge I had come up with for my vest wasn't ribbing, the last row was (k p k p k) repeat so it was a 5 stitch repeat and it had two knit stitches next to each other in every 5 stitches. If this had happened yesterday, I'd just think "ok, this isn't going to work", but it happened when I "knew" a lot lees than I know now. So, without understanding what the idea of the thing was at all, I just thought, ok, so we're passing through each stitch twice, and for a purl stitch the passes are like this, and for a knit stitch the passes are like this, I got it. So I "followed" the instructions modified for my stitch pattern the way I figured them out. The edges on that vest, which is in pure cotton by the way, are just perfect.
Why am I saying this. Well, if we go by the book, I messed up that edge. My stitch pattern wasn't suitable for the bind off I was using and I was supposed to go for something else. I didn't know that, so I made up something based on the bind off instructions I was using and it worked. It might not have worked but in this case it did. So I'm all for trying things out and if it works, whatever it is, great.
This being said, I was mighty confused by the term "tubular bind off" because of the name until I tried some things, read some things, thought about some things. The thing is, it is actually a tube. The rows/rounds that I have seen in patterns labelled as "set-up", what they really are is double knitting: knitting two pieces of fabric side by side. Typically it begins with 1 by 1 rib, the effect these rows/rounds with the slipped stitches have is they bring the knit stitches together at the front, and they bring the purl stitches together at the back, so you really have two separate pieces of fabric (all knit stitches facing the front and all knit stitches facing the back), and the final step of binding off with the needle is just grafting the usual way. The instructions for grafting just look different because you have all the stitches on one needle and not on two separate needles.

I love your colorful yarns! I last went to a wedding in 2019, in Costa Rice (read: expensive). I thrifted three beautiful dresses and and two pairs of shoes to cover meet and greet cocktail thing, rehearsal dinner and wedding. I then loaned the rehearsal shoes to my cousin to wear to the wedding, since hers were painful. Total spent was around 30 USD.
