    Searched proper way to use tonfa for writing my fiction and ended up here. I love how you explain it. But I wonder how you can move them without falling.

      That is great, good luck with your writing! Thank you for your comment! I have another video on how to use the tonfa (ruclips.net/video/tYKrEm_BWf4/видео.html) if you are interested. You have to have a good grip so they won't fall, but also have to let them loose in order to move them around.

    I'm a PR-24 handler, instructed through the US Dept Of VA [so take that for what it's worth 🙄😄] -
    Great video!
    The key to the PR-24/Tonfa - for strikes - is the kinetic energy the design of the weapon creates. Like an Atlatl, the Tonfa makes advantage of how humans are built. Making kinetic energy, isn't easy.

    • @NoraTKD
      @NoraTKD  4 года назад +3

      Yes, you are right, the tonfa definitely makes the human arms longer with the strike! It adds distance, power and speed too if done properly!

    Nightsticks are weighted differently than tonfa don't confuse the two tone for the weight is centered around the handle nightstick weight is evenly distributed

    • @doloinc
      @doloinc 24 дня назад

      Nightsticks that are based on tonfa are primarily detainment tools. Tonfa are primarily threshing tools and striking weapons.
      A tonfa shouldn't be balanced the same as PR-24.

  • @jeremycorbin2178
    @jeremycorbin2178 5 лет назад +2

    Random thought but at 9:32 I noticed the arm cuff of your gi kept catching the tonfa, hence why you roll up your sleeves. However, what if the gi actually helps those using tonfa by not only providing the arm some padding, but also the longer cuff slightly catches the tonfa and slows it a little bit just by the added resistance and friction of it once its extended one rotation. This would stop it from over-rotating and keep it in line with the fore-arm maybe?
    Probably isn't very effective in practice, but perhaps it could work.

    • @NoraTKD
      @NoraTKD  5 лет назад +1

      That is actually a good idea, thank you. I usually roll up the sleeves as it bothers me that the tonfa keeps hitting my uniform. Not much padding though! The thing is, the longer you practice the tonfa, the sweatier your palms get then you will have trouble rotating the tonfa! Over rotation is not a problem then :D Interestingly, the tonfa only rolls well enough if it is aligned with your forearm.

    remember the old kung fu flicks and martial art tutorials , my favorite weapon was the three- quarter staff. I don't know about Hungary but in the eighties in California , the tonfa and nunchuku were banned on the streets.

    • @NoraTKD
      @NoraTKD  6 лет назад +1

      Most martial arts weapons are probably not legal to use on the streets in many countries, but you can still learn and practice them in your local martial arts club as a registered martial artist. The interesting thing is that most of these weapons (nunchaku, tonfa, three quarter staff etc.) were used hundreds of years- if not a thousand years - ago by regular people, mostly civilians/farmers who were just trying to defend themselves against rogue warriors using swords.
      The police in most places use the tonfa as their basic equipment (they call it baton and use only one not properly). I think the nunchaku and the three quarter staff are good too but more difficult to use them as you can hit yourself hard.

They build them with a ballistic gel "flesh" outer, a plastic skull that's about as tough as real bone, and they fill the inside with red dyed water so if you break it open it goes SPLAT. Hard 2 Hurt recently did a good demo of how weak nunchaku strikes were compared to a staff of the same length - it's good to experiment, see which tonfa strikes would do the most damage and which would be just good for distraction.

    Tuifa aka Tonfa from Shureido in Okinawa don't have that grip issue they don't make your sweaty either. The powder is kind of a cheat. Better to get a weapon that isn't coated like the American makers love to do.

    sadly in California you can do almost nothing to defend yourself. No guns, no knives, no collapsable batons....fortunately you can carry a full can of grizzly mace and a tonfa. So I am going to learn more about this amazing defensive tool and also take up martial arts. I need to have some way to defend my wife who is planning on becoming pregnant with our first child in a few months. I came from Delaware and there we were able to carry a pistol for self defense. I am not used to not having the great equalizer around to help stop threats. Now I must make the most of what I can.

    • @NoraTKD
      @NoraTKD  2 года назад

      It is good that you want to learn self defense. Good luck with your tonfa practice, make sure that you keep safe and sound and don't go to places where you can get into trouble. The best self defense is the one you will never have to use.

    I have a funny story. I ordered a pair of tonfas a while ago. Right now I am in hospital. They came to my home in that time, so my father took them and brought them to me. I practiced a little bit also with this video. Then they catches me with the tonfas and took them away. 😅 This ruined my day. But the video is great!

    • @NoraTKD
      @NoraTKD  3 года назад

      You actually have to have a tight grip when you are holding onto the tonfa and stopping the spinning motion. But of course, it is a different weapon than a staff or a sword.

    • @duanejackson6718
      @duanejackson6718 2 года назад

      Mine is a heavy alloy baton, the outer half of the side handle has a rotating grip, the inside grip is fixed solid, so it can be held firmly between the thumb and index, to spin and strike, and gripped with the lower portion of the hand to stop it from spinning. So it has the added advantage of a solid grip while spinning.

    It's clear no one told you the tonfa is controlled by your two little fingers close to the intersection. The handles of the tonfa you use in this video are too long for your hands; you keep adjusting your grip, which is no good. What you call a back flip, forward flip or a down flip is not a 'flip.' It's a block or an attack. A tonfa is a weapon
