@@A.C.P1969can confirm, bought a Micra, floor looked good from underneath, took out the carpet to replace it with a different 1, woop brown patch underneath the carpet, smacked it with a screwdriver handle and a fist sized rust hole appeared

My dad had one of these when i was a kid, i spent my entire childhood rebuilding these things, literally my most favourite car.

The only thing then is that it won't be MOT exempt anymore, however I believe they're going to get MOTs anyway
@@georgebrown5866 I mean that's debatable, I reckon you could argue that an engine swap from the same car doesn't qualify as substantial modifications (which I believe is the only factor disqualifying a classic from MOT / tax exemption), and what the DVLA doesnt know wont hurt them :P

Interesting choice! I had a ‘72 GT6 which is the slightly more refined version of the spitfire with a hardtop, 2litre straight 6 and 4 on the floor with OVERDRIVE.
They do shift given they weigh less than a ton. My GT6 had a few upgrades on it but would easily outpace a standard 1275 Mini Cooper s.
There’s a few bits to look for on these, one being the rear suspension. You’ve found the issue with the dampers (fortunately very cheap to replace) just make sure the rotoflex donuts on the rear drive axles are actually intact before doing any spirited driving. Whilst I’m on the subject, there was a problem on the MK1&2 GT6 whereby the rear wheel would tuck under the car under heavy cornering and when back under load again would cause some interesting driving response. This may also be a characterful attribute of the spitfires too.
Most of this I’m sure Tom will be aware of, or may have already noticed. However there are two other issues you need to be weary of.
I had to replace the front vertical links on mine complete with rose joints as the lower trunnion rotted away and eventually gave way, leading to me bringing Coventry to a standstill after my wheel fell off.
-could be funny for a video, but these aren’t the safest of cars.
Secondly, and less dangerous, there’s a banjo bolt that if I remember correctly goes into the manifold. Try not to touch this unless you really have to. They’re different metals so they corrode and weld themselves together. Easiest just to get a new manifold (like I did).
There’s plenty of following for the spitfire and if I can help at all, reach out to me. No expert but I used mine on the daily for about 3-4 years so I have a fair idea with these.
Oh and as for upgrades: just get some twin SU carbs, will go much quicker than the standard strombergs - just make sure Tom gets the correct needles for the jets 😅
Nice work boys. These are tiny tin metal boxes but really good fun. They even kinda drift and the camber is easy to adjust on the front axle too. Have fun chaps, interested to see WHEN it breaks down 😅😮😚

I have a MGB GT 1979. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. It’s the only car that gives me a damn drivers smile. Just you, the car and the road and like Tyler said. Every drive in it is an adventure. If a classic car doesn’t scare you into getting RAC it’s not a good classic ahahaha.
They're brilliant, my first car last year was a yellow 1980 GT, done about 4000 miles so far and it's never let me down!
Also, the MGB is objectively a better car than the Spitfire. The suspension setup on the Spitfire is downright dangerous during heavy cornering.
I restored an MGBGT, but it never gave me the feeling I expected when I drove it. It was okay, but never as special as I thought it would be. So I sold it and bought a Spitfire 1500, which I then also had to repair far more than I really wanted to. But the Spitfire gives me that special experience every time I drive it. Perhaps though, it is something as simple as the roof difference.
The rear wheels on a Spitfire are meant to sit like that when up in the air. Thanks to transverse leaf rear suspension. They all do it. :) I've got a Herald with the same engine, just done a track day at Castle Combe in it, loads of fun!
Ben at @TastyClassics has a really nice Spitfire he just restored. There’s quite a bit of potential with these cars
I had a 72 in red, 1300 engine with overdrive. A fantastic car.
I will say something, when I feel down or not in the best mindset I do always turn to you guys as the videos all have such good vibes and a lot of laughs you put Alex, Taylor and (Hamster) Rory together you know it’s gonna be funny especially the occasional time with Tom and the others. But I wanna thank you lot as you’ve helped me and others get through rough times and made them feel a little bit brighter
THIS IS ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME AS MY EXPERIENCE!!! I bought a Spitfire MK4 and I came across a whole bunch of issues like this, I have paperclips instead of fuses, a piece of tinted plastic instead of sun visors, missing bolts holding the body to the chassis!! The list goes on... BUT it is balanced out by the fact it is a cheap entry level classic that is simple to work on and fun to drive about in the summer with the roof down! It doesn't have to be a full nut and bolt rebuild job to scratch that itch, It has certainly done that for me, I'm actually selling mine this summer for sub £3k too for the next person to enjoy. Good to see this car on the channel!

Such fun little cars. I had a '79 1500 with overdrive and loved blasting along country lanes. Fit some spax adjustable dampers and it'll help a lot. The O/D box works in 3rd and 4th giving you 6 gears.
I had a converted 1500 white 73 and a red 1300 72. I love those cars, I miss my two. They were great cars.

I remember being taken to hospital in one of these as a kid by a neighbour. We were having brick fights (coincidentally in Manchester) and I lost. Got to ride in a spitfire and a couple of days off school though. Not a bad day.

Need more of these cheap car challenges across this channel, TDC and all the gear in my opinion. Something that the majority can relate to and even aspire to as opposed to expensive motors. Plus the mishaps add to the amusement

I have a 1977 Spitfire 1500, and I can say that the “oil explosion” on the bonnet is oil splatter from the front oil seal around the timing chain. Not that bad of a fix and should be well within the extra budget. Also, new shocks and new bushings on the front anti-roll bar makes that Mark IV a whole new vehicle

I think Rory did great! I mean the rusty Mini is cute but the Triumph is actually great looking! Sure in a race that Mini would destroy it probably (and by the looks of it also itself though). This is car worthy of restoration (Mini ofc also though).

Nice Spit 😎 Mine's also a MkIV with 1500 engine and OD box - you can fit the gearbox without taking the engine out... it's also quite heavy!
I owned a Spitfire 1500, great cars! But for certain as a unibody design with that much windscreen movement those sills in that car are not to good. The fact the car sags to that extent is another indication, and the filler on the b pillar. That cars just had filler and paint over the rust for sure, it’s a bodger. If your upgrading start with a uprated aluminium radiator - these things like to go nuclear the minute the suns out and you hit traffic, the original rads were not great, mix that with 40 years of sediment. Make sure you add a fuel filter before the pump, as you’ll have the needle and seat get stuck in both the carbs and you’ll have fuel gushing out the overflows. Check the fuel overflows have their pipes connected as you’ll have a bad day if they aren’t and the fuel goes straight onto the exhaust. Make sure your valve clearances are correct otherwise you’ll burn a valve real easy or run like crap! Honestly get the fundamentals right and these will be very reliable! Look after the old girl and she’ll take care of you Rory!
Given a good one will cost you 6k and up, I'm not surprised lol.

I live in the equivalent of an ULEZ zone in my country. I hated it at the beginning. Now we get way less traffic when I want to use my car, I can breathe out and metros and buses come more frequently so I don't HAVE to use my car. Hang in there, is painful at the start, but it's better later

That carb on the mini engine needs to be moved closer to the supercharger if you intend on driving it long distances, the carb will freeze being so far away.
