- Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train operates a coal mine tour and a steam train operation out of Ashland, Pennsylvania. This 42" gauge operation brought anthracite coal out of Mahanoy Mountain to the hillside, with coal dumped down the hill to the standard gauge railroad below.
Leading trains on the original Pioneer Tunnel line is 0-4-0T 1 "Henry Clay", a 1927-built Vulcan tank engine. Originally Lehigh Valley Coal Company 123, the locomotive shifts back and forth the converted mine carts on the tour of the mountain.
Went here in August for my birthday. Very cool experience. The engineer is a very interesting person lol
Interesting how this is the only operating railroad in the US with buffers and chains as opposed to conventional couplers or links and pins.
If memory serves, the Wanamie Mine Railway used dumb buffers and chains as well, although that railway is LONG gone
From what I remember many mining railways used buffers and chains as their mining equipment and mine carts already used it, it was just cheaper to apply the same system to their locomotives as well.
Fantastic video. 🎥👍👍👍👍🙋♂
Thanks
Awesome 😊
Great video :)
Thanks
Some narration would be great. Great footage.
Not really our style. Select videos will feature narration, most others will not. Much of our views come from countries where English isnt the primary language, so the narrated videos don't appeal to the majority of our viewers. Glad you enjoyed.
Nice railroad How long is the line .does it go longer . this one of my favorite locomotive d
The whole tourist line goes about 3/4 of a mile.
Very unique locomotive and railway.

What camera do you use?
This one specifically was filmed with a Sony AX53 camcorder.
