The holding of the box is the best swing tip I have come across lately that is an easy thing to keep in mind on the range. It will definitely help prevent that weak blocked shot to the right more often. Great stuff!
This tip from 2009 solidifies and validates exactly what I have been working on! For me, this IS the most important tip of my almost 60 year journey of studying, learning and misunderstanding the golf swing. Thank you Ernie Els.
love ernie, such a class guy. been my fav golfer since i was a kid. i hope he can get his master's and pga championship victories to complete the grand slam.
@Rugbyman2468 I asked that exact same question, and it's down to a few things. First of all they're chipping off fairways that are cut as tight as the greens on normal courses (this helps nip the ball off the turf), secondly, although it looks like an easy swing, his hands are actually moving very fast through impact, and this generates more spin, and lastly, they're using practically brand new wedges every tournament, which keeps the grooves sharp. But the hands make the most difference
One of the best swings on the PGA tour I think. Lovely and controllable. Amazing how smooth he swings the club then hits 300 yard shots with his driver
You got it. I really think he's reacting to a move that wormed its way into his swing about three years ago, maybe four--that little bounce at the top where the angle starts to open before he comes down. You may know what I'm talking about--if not, I'll find a vid on YT to show it. This "tip" here is exactly the kind of thing he'd need to counter that.
Yes. One of Ernie's intermitent faults over the years has been to get a little loose at the top and throw a little from the top. This is because he's so flexible, and probably doesn't realise he's doing it until it becomes a problem. The swingthought is a counter to this like you say, (so beware reading too much into it if you don't have the same problem, you'll go too far the other way!)
Continued Tiger can keep his right elbow pointing in front of his right hip because his lower body and hips rotate so efficiently. This is one of the bigger differences in his swing compared to Hogan's. Keeping the right elbow touching the right hip on the downswing promotes the body to rotate the blade square. This is much more reliable for the majority of golfers since it takes the wrists out of play. All the best with becoming a pro, hope you make it. Tour pro or teaching pro?
Dead right, if I tried that i'd block everything. The club releases from the top and extends through the impact area. Ernie is describing what he is feeling in this session, whats keeping him on track at the moment. The laws of physics govern the reality!
I'm trying to learn to keep the same angle and not lose that box, its hard for me for some reason. Also, I am working on turning my hips earlier because my hips turn after I make contact with the ball. If anyone has any tips I would appreciate it.
@CameronStewart No shit? It could have been any links range because at no point is there any mention of the location. Don't try and troll me either because I know the course very well...
Hmm. I'm not sure I'm following. Correct me if I'm wrong: I think you're saying that the angle between arms and shaft that is visible at address on a DTL view of a good player is all but gone with Ernie at impact--that is, that this angle has straightened. But then, when you say his forearm is "almost parallel to the ground," I can't get a fix on what that means. What am I wrong about so far?
hey maybe sum of u guys mite b able 2 ansa dis, how can he possibly get enough spin on his shortgame shots into greens wit such a slow and simple swing, it dusnt seem doable, ive been tryin 4 months 2 backspin or at least bite wit d same rythm swing as him, and i jst cant!!!
Not quite. The reason the right arm cannot be straight at impact as at address, is because once you start swinging down the right elbow is pulled to touching the right hip as the swing arc narrows. Just like the best ball striker of all times, Ben Hogan, said 'the downswing arc is narrower than the backswing arc'. Tiger's right arm is almost equally straight at impact as at address b/c his right elbow is in front of the hip, as opposed to touching it such as Ernie and the majority of players.
@mysteryisgod... no it doesn't. all great ballstrikers, or even decent ones for that matter, have a bent elbow at impact. yes, even tiger. it's the only way to ensure a square clubface. if your arm is straight at impact your clubface is closed, unless you have a weaker than neutral grip and you get flippy with your hands. if you want to be a pro, you're going to have to do better than scratch.
@PapaBearGolf... i beg to differ good sir. when increasing lag, a ball can only be properly struck by steady hands and a flat left wrist with the club on the right plane. these three things must happen otherwise you will either pull it left, hit it on the heel, or hit it fat. he's showing how to make a proper golf swing, not a crappy incorrect swing aided by technology to make bad golfers feel better about themselves.
I don't see, after looking at this swing, how anyone could say it isn't a top 5 swing of all time? Please explain why it isn't? don't confuse the question with results and many other variables to winning?
I am watching a video of Ernie Els, and under it the first word I read on a coment is "Tiger can....." Is there not enough Tiger videos in youtube, for you to leave your opinions there? Here let´s talk about Ernie's tip. And Ernie's approach. Thank you. Bottom line is: I don´t care about Tiger, Tiger fans and enthusiastics stick to Tiger videos and sites. (And I don´t particularly dislike Tiger)
respectfully, i contend that all golfers aspire to strike a crisp iron, no matter what the skill level. that requires us to make a divot just after the ball is struck. so, while that may not require as much lag as ern is demonstrating, it does require the hands to be leading the head at impact, which in turn requires some amount of lag. practicing bad habits for an hour still takes an hour. why not use that hour practicing properly?
If anyone wanted to see "ability," check out Ernie's baseball swing getting that ball out of the tree at Troon about 10 years ago.........and he pared the hole.
@CameronStewart I haven't failed in any way buddy, you're the one that came on here and took it upon yourself to spurt out lines of troll talk. Bearing in mind you actually started this whole conflict by making a silly 'No shit' comment when a simple 'yes, you're right' would have been suffice. You're the one who has failed to be civilised, not me.
Love Ernie, but in fact he doesn't do this in his full swings, nor could any good player. That angle has to open up and release or you've got a total hang-on move, which is the exact opposite of a good Els swing. It may be that the _sensation_ of doing this helps him in some way.

the most simple, useful, genius tip ever.......makes it look so easy
What an absolute legend. Such a gentle nice guy

this tip really gets you compressing the ball! Class!
One of the greatest of all time.. Els is the MAN
One of the best swings on the PGA tour I think. Lovely and controllable. Amazing how smooth he swings the club then hits 300 yard shots with his driver
Mechanically there are better swings but there is none better in the WAY he swings, his rhythm and ease of movement is as good as it gets.
pure poetry, one of the greatest actions ever
@SphexPanda i think youre right! i watched him on the range at the open hitting knock down 3 irons into a headwind straight at the 200 board.
Amazing Video... Not many people get an inside experience like this. Thanks for posting!
His swing is gold!
yeah, certainly one of my favourites of all time as well......good to see him still paying well
You got it.

Very good and simple tip for you all.
Remember try to keep the swing simple.
This tip is so good i am hitting my irons so much more purely now!!!

agree with you 100% class player's and 2 nice guys
"give it a lash" what an absolute champion. My favourite player ever....even if he did defect to callaway.
I can understand your point, it is rather ironic that there actually are so many Tiger comments on Ernie Els videos.
You made my day ernie, let's driving range!
@theunisbotha : Couldn't be said any better. Best person in golf.

The sound that ball makes off the club face. Wow
