The sanding belt block is by far the best full sized block you can find. My original Craftsmen version was bought from Sears in 1980. Found nothing better in the last 45 years. It has light padding on one side to make it more versatile.
Looking *DEAD* into the camera at 0:24 while catching the single flip of the block.... how is THAT not what all the comments are about?! 😜💙 This is the best solution for a sanding block I've found online yet! Thanks! 👍
@@TheMuzShop Something to consider, when you do a project like this, you really ought to do a run of a few dozen... after watching this video, I'd pay ANYTHING to click a link in the description and buy one for $50+ "while supplies last". I often think of this when I see someone make something cool (or over built, or just interesting) in a video, when they have everything set up, figured out, sourced, measured, etc. It makes way more sense to me than buying a $25 Tshirt at a gift shop or a glass from some expensive restaurant or a $250 keychain from Tiffany's... not only is it a cool item, but it's something you can actually use (and enjoy) regularly. The tool shelf on a guy's workbench is much less different than a girl's jewelry box on her dresser than we like to think. 😍
Brilliant! I want to build one of these! I wonder if you could design a spring loaded block that can except regular sandpaper also? But most of all thank you this is fantastic!
Great idea thanks - I would set a small neodymium magnet in the side and a channel just deep and wide enough to keep the locking pin in place. Just so it is always there when you need it.
@@TheMuzShop that's for sure. Gonna buy a spring on monday. Rest of the materials at home. And gonna make one extra for fathers day for my father in law
Looked at several videos on these sanding blocks and I think yours is by far simpler to build. Thumbs up! Only change I will do is drill a separate hole to hold the locking nail. I can loose a pencil in a shirt pocket. Chazz, Working Hand Wood Works
Nice! Any issues with the sanding belt shifting or coming loose during use? Seems like ones hand could push the heal and loosen the sanding belt during use. Maybe use a stronger spring to reduce this?
I think that may become a problem if you sand in a backward motion, but as one normally applies sanding pressure in the forward motion I doubt it would affect shifting of the sanding belt to any noticeable degree
You don't need anything as complicated as this to make a "self locking" sanding block. You just need to cut the edges of your block at a 15 degree angle. The narrow face goes at the top, the wider face goes down. Then wrap sandpapder round the block, and crease the paper on the 15 degree edges, take it off, fold along the creases and put it back on. The sandpaper will hold itself to the block! see alexanderguestguitars.com Videos page "The World's Best Sanding Block" for the full run-down.
Clearly the Steven Spielberg of the woodworking crowd.
