He uses the sack on Death so he could live longer, but when he wanted to die and released Death, it ran away in fear, never to take his soul for eternity. He walked on foot to get to Hell and asked for entry; he was denied. He then asked for some souls from Limbo and a map to Heaven, and made his way to the gates. The angel at the gate said that the souls could enter, but the man could not. He gave his magic sack to one of the souls and told it to put him in the sack when he gets in, but as souls have no memory, he was left an inch away from Paradise, until he just went back to Earth I think this SCP is based off that folktale

This SCP tells us that immortality isn't so great. Every person we know, or don't know will die. Once the earth is completely destroyed, it's just you. Your fate will be with you until the end of time. It's just you, and the universe.
when people give arguments to why immortality is bad they always point out to the death of the earth or the death of the universe, but you dont have to go that far for immortality to show its bad sides. Even 500 years can be extremely painful. For example, does immortality come with perfect memory or does it come with human memory, and to be honest, which is worse? In one case you would have to remember every single person who you knew die, every single act of brutality hostility and malice that have happened since then, even the good memores would be bad as they come to a painfully fast end. The other case is you, stralling about till the end of time, not knowing who you are, where you are, what happened, why you are here, why you are alive and so on. Also, does immortality come with pain nullification? Or do you have to still feel the pain of insane hunger or thirtst without the release of death, pain from an accident or pain from a wound? If you were immortal wouldn't the government know after like 10-20 years of you not aging? Would the government really let you be free after they know you're immortal? I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I am pretty sure that the government would want to research an immortal person. Also, what if you were imprisoned? Immortality doesnt make you omnipotent. You could be kidnapped, imprisoned in an iron coffin and put 6 feet below ground. Also,I'm guessing that immortality would be absolute,so even if you wanted to die you couldnt. Could a human really mentally survive hundreds of years of pain? What if you went insane? You would not be in a right state of mind for all of eternity, could you really call that living? Isn't that more of a curse? At the end of the day, what I want to say is,why would any sane person ever want to be immortal?
"Should you choose to challenge Death to a game of cards for your life, there is one thing you must never do...win." What if you play Monopoly instead?
I understand there's more to it than just how hard something is too contain but I've always wondered: why isn't 1440 Apollyon class? For those unaware, Apollyon means something is uncontainable. The best example would be 001: When Day Breaks
But he is containable. Even if only for a short time. It's like making 106 (the much more evil old man) Appolyon, simply because he can't currently be contained (subdued, yes, but he could leave whenever he wants)
Difficult doesn't mean impossible. They can keep him under wraps from the public and 1440 can mitigate the destruction he causes. An Apollyon 1440 would spawn in a city, go to the next one after its destroyed and have bo way of stopping it
I always like the stories of the downside of "winning" eternal life. The idea that you could meet a figure of death and challenge them. Either a fight or dual, or maybe just a game of cards. The thing is a mortal isn't suppose to win, because there is always a give and take. Law of equivalent exchange. In this case the man can live forever, but at a cost of becoming a force of death and destruction! Never to be able to join civilization or become that witch he thought he could escape. I also love a line I heard from somewhere: "why dk humans wish for eternal life when they don't know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon?"
This is one of those classic SCP making a thing everyone knows and making it dangerous. Everyone has seen an old man that seems to just wander your city or town.
Considering there are sadly like two people close to me at this point, leading to an endlessly lonely and hopeless feeling/environment, aside from the whole “destroy everything to do with humanity” thing, unaging immortality doesn’t sound so bad.
Okay but hear me out. Get 682 to a mostly empty site and have the old man come in. We all know who's walking out of there anyways so let the old man have his release
I'm so excited! I did a good deed for a dear friend in need, I have a date later, and I get to enjoy this insanely said scp video! (I was looking for something to cry about today I won't lie. I like to cry at least once a week)
Here's a little idea. Send a DClass to the Old Man's location (one away from all other civilization) and have that DClass interrogate him with a Microphone and a communication device so that they can get info about him directly without risking millions of lives and dollars in damage.
Immortality is probably one of the worst things you could wish for, everyone knows about the sheer depression of watching those you love disappear but you would live to see the end of the world, not being able to die. You would just float through space endlessly......pretty fun huh lol
if i remember right, the tree brothers were pissed not cause he challenged them but because he got greedy. he originally challenged them to win his life back and stay alive just a little longer. and he won. but then he decided to challenge them again and again, for their treasures which are the very things he carries with him now. he won those too. the brothers tried to bribe him. tired to exchange their treasures for somethings else but the man refused. they are still angry about this. about his greedyness. and that is why they make him suffer.
This feels like the man from the "Brother's Bride" SCP... 1. A man wandering the earth unable to come into contact with human things. 2. "He should not have won" (a card game with death) 3. Some "brother" related hooplaboola. I assume he enjoys taking in the nature around him, which is why Brother's Bride destroys everything he has.
If they keep insisting on capturing him, at least bring him to a small shed for interviews and not a highly expensive facility with a ton of personnel 💀
So here is a thought provoking question. If he makes something himself like say a tent from naturally acquired materials say a tree, or a statuette from a log would those be classified as man made or would they be immune since he made them

SCP-1440 Object Class: Keter Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1440 is currently uncontained and its location is unknown since its last containment breach. Due to the nature of SCP-1440, the Foundation may not have the means to contain it without risking an unacceptable loss of resources and personnel. Until suitable containment procedures can be found, focus should be given to the location and surveillance of SCP-1440 and to minimizing civilian exposure to it through the identification of its travel pattern. Description: SCP-1440 is a man of unknown ethnicity and age. When questioned about its name, place or time of birth, SCP-1440 will refuse to answer, although it is unclear if this is due to the subject being unwilling to share this information or not possessing it. Though the subject's appearance is that of an octogenarian, it has not shown any signs of aging in the fifty (50) years since first coming to the attention of the Foundation. SCP-1440's anomalous nature becomes apparent once it comes into contact with human population or man-made objects and remains in contact with them for longer than a few days; SCP-1440 has an acute adverse effect on everything connected to humanity. Prolonged exposure of any man-made object or person to it will cause increasingly destructive events to occur in SCP-1440's vicinity, until the destruction or death of said human element. The only exceptions to this are SCP-1440 itself and its belongings (its clothes, a sack made of unidentified material, a pack of worn playing cards, and a small glass cup). SCP-1440 appears to be aware of its effect on human populations, and will attempt to avoid coming into contact with them whenever possible. Despite these intentions, SCP-1440 is compelled to travel in what seems to be a highly complex pattern, which invariably leads it into contact with human population. The exact nature of this pattern has not yet been successfully analyzed, and SCP-1440 has not been able to provide any information concerning it. The subject is not actively hostile and will not resist attempts to contain it, though all such attempts have failed and led to a considerable loss of personnel and resources due to the aforementioned anomalous properties. SCP-1440 was first brought to the Foundation's attention when it approached Dr. ██████, a researcher at Site-██, on her commute to work. SCP-1440 showed unexplained knowledge of Dr. ██████'s work for the Foundation and requested her assistance. When Dr. ██████ inquired about the nature of the assistance the subject required, it responded that it hoped the Foundation would be able to "destroy [him]". SCP-1440 was brought to Site-██ for questioning, which led to the destruction of the site, the deaths of ███ personnel and the destruction of six (6) Safe and Euclid-level SCP objects. All other attempts at containing SCP-1440 have resulted in similar occurrences. Addendum SCP-1440-A: The following is an interview conducted with SCP-1440 during the fourth attempt to contain it, on Area-142. The log was being stored on a remote server, hence its survival. - Hide Interview Log 1440-7 Interviewer: Dr. ████ Interviewed: SCP-1440 Foreword: Following the arrival of SCP-1440 to Area-142, personnel began complaining about severe headaches and nausea. In the next two days, three of the four on-site water purification filters broke down, Area-142's hangar collapsed, causing the deaths of multiple airmen and Dr. ███ - previously in perfect physical condition - suffered a complete collapse of both kidneys and both lungs simultaneously. Dr. ████: Good afternoon, SCP-1440. SCP-1440: And to you, Doctor. Dr. ████: Do you know why we brought you here? SCP-1440: Of course I do, and applaud you for still attempting to contain me, but since your last three attempts I came to realize you cannot help me. It would be best if you let me go, for your own good. The First Brother is already standing behind you, Doctor, you would best hurry. Dr. ████: You mentioned these brothers before, three if I recall correctly. SCP-1440: Three, Aye. Different, but one and the same. All cruel, all vengeful, all capable of holding a grudge for a long time. They are the cause of my misfortune, and therefore the cause of yours. [Subject appears to notice something behind Dr. ████, though video and audio feed reveal nothing unusual.] The Second Brother joins the First, time is running short. Release me, or I cannot vouch for your safety. It might already be too late. Dr. ████: I'm afraid I can't do that. Besides, you mentioned three brothers; if the third isn't here yet, we must have some time left. SCP-1440: [Shakes head.] The Third never appears. In that, he is crueler than both his brothers, for he knows his appearance is the only thing that will set me free. I have spent time untold searching for him, trying to return his prize and those I won from his brothers, but to no avail. [Subject looks behind Dr. ████ again, sighs] The Second has his hands on your shoulders, it is too late now. Doom is never far behind the Second. Before you perish, my poor child, allow me to give you a word of advice. Dr. ████: Go ahead. SCP-1440: Should you choose to challenge Death to a game of cards for your life, there is one thing you must never do. Dr. ████: And what is that? SCP-1440: Win. Closing statement: At that moment, the on-site nuclear device stored in Area-142 detonated, despite multiple failsafes. Area-142 was destroyed and all on-site personnel were killed. SCP-1440 was spotted more than three thousand (3,000) kilometers away from Area-142's location a week following its destruction, suffering no apparent harm. After three additional containment breaches, attempts to contain SCP-1440 have been suspended indefinitely. Addendum SCP-1440-B: Due to the growing size of human population and its rapid expansion into previously empty areas, SCP-1440 attested during its fifth containment that it is becoming increasingly difficult for it to avoid contact with humanity while still adhering to its compulsion. Analysis of the subject's traveling pattern is continuing, as are efforts to find a permanent containment procedure.
There are people who are perfectly fine with the losses that come with immortality, I know a man who has lived long enough that most everyone he knows is dead, but he doesn't wish to die, not to say he wants to live though, he doesn't care what happens.
It almost sounded like he was being punished. Like that one scp who killed his daughter forever ago and is now doomed to be reborn and meet back up with his daughter, so she could take her revenge. I felt like that’s what kinda happened to the old man, like he’s being punished for beating death in a card game. No one said death had to play fair.
Wait what if we put SCP-682 in a room with The Old Man From Nowhere. Will SCP-682 finally perish? Or will SCP-682 somehow kill, or take The Old Man From Nowhere's powers?
Sounds like an even darker version of the Three Brothers tale from Harry Potter and the Deathly hallows. Only instead of an invisibility cloak, ressurection stone, and elder wand, we have a sac of holding, water of life, and death's playing cards.
I have a reality simulator sitting between my ears. With enough practice either via lucid dreaming or meditation I could simulate whatever reality I can imagine with the sensational realism of base reality. Whenever the mind is stuck in a cage there is always a way out.

It's like making 106 (the much more evil old man) Appolyon, simply because he can't currently be contained (subdued, yes, but he could leave whenever he wants)
Difficult doesn't mean impossible. They can keep him under wraps from the public and 1440 can mitigate the destruction he causes. An Apollyon 1440 would spawn in a city, go to the next one after its destroyed and have bo way of stopping it
They could leave him in a deserted Island without a boat ( not that it will stand) and bring him food regularly
Finally, you covered the answer to The Brothers' Bride! I wonder why they hadn't arranged a meeting yet?
The SCP foundation?
(Hopefully) Because, knowing the Bride was specifically made to torture this dude, it would be a huge dick move to introduce them

We search for eternal life because that is our call on the universe, out call is to be eternal so that we can make the universe itself eternal.
This is one of those classic SCP making a thing everyone knows and making it dangerous.
Everyone has seen an old man that seems to just wander your city or town.
Wow they captured 1440 to be interviewed multiple times,They could have just interviewed him in the woods /where he is
Interesting, I just read this file last night after going over the SCP-5000 file again, and now SCP Explained has a video about it!
"Everybody wants to live forever"
Me: Who wants that sh*t???
Considering there are sadly like two people close to me at this point, leading to an endlessly lonely and hopeless feeling/environment, aside from the whole “destroy everything to do with humanity” thing, unaging immortality doesn’t sound so bad.
The problem is, when everything else dies, you yourself will remain. You'll be driven mad, and not be able to end it all.
Okay but hear me out.
Get 682 to a mostly empty site and have the old man come in. We all know who's walking out of there anyways so let the old man have his release
The risk is way too high especially when death is involved with 682 and the ol death .
The man heralds the 3 Deaths, and one of those Deaths is feared by the Scarlet King.
This man could be the key to getting rid of every anomaly.
Better keep him away from the goc either that or DO give him to the goc
oh god living forever and continuing to pay taxes and bills sounds like hell
I'm so excited! I did a good deed for a dear friend in need, I have a date later, and I get to enjoy this insanely said scp video! (I was looking for something to cry about today I won't lie. I like to cry at least once a week)
Good luck on your date!

This is one of my favorites, especially since the "scp 032 brother's bride" video
Here's a little idea. Send a DClass to the Old Man's location (one away from all other civilization) and have that DClass interrogate him with a Microphone and a communication device so that they can get info about him directly without risking millions of lives and dollars in damage.
Or just routinely send a new iPad with 5G via Amazon Prime delivery drone
Or just send a letter to him

This SCP, albeit innocent, just scares me. The concept of a presence of death stalking you and kills everyone around.
Finally! Brothers Death is truly the most strongest there is.
Ah cool, I wonder if you did this as part of the what would "God" do with an interaction question you posed earlier and this was to give background!
Immortality is probably one of the worst things you could wish for, everyone knows about the sheer depression of watching those you love disappear but you would live to see the end of the world, not being able to die. You would just float through space endlessly......pretty fun huh lol
That's why i'd rather stop aging but still be able to get killed than being completely immortal
An immortal old guy who destroys construction.
An immortal young girl who destroys people's minds.
I want to see them interact.
Poor, guy, what a fate.
if i remember right, the tree brothers were pissed not cause he challenged them but because he got greedy.
he originally challenged them to win his life back and stay alive just a little longer.
and he won.
but then he decided to challenge them again and again, for their treasures which are the very things he carries with him now.
he won those too.
the brothers tried to bribe him. tired to exchange their treasures for somethings else but the man refused.
they are still angry about this. about his greedyness.
and that is why they make him suffer.
The three brothers are just bad lossers.
But they are making others hurt
@@everythingpony I dont think they care.
Actually, scratch that. They might prefer it since making innocent people suffer makes the man suffer more.
In “the stars do not wait for you” scp 1915 literally fucks up everything….and yet “death STILL did not come for him” shit was sad af!
This feels like the man from the "Brother's Bride" SCP...
1. A man wandering the earth unable to come into contact with human things.
2. "He should not have won" (a card game with death)
3. Some "brother" related hooplaboola.
I assume he enjoys taking in the nature around him, which is why Brother's Bride destroys everything he has.

Okay but the VA did a great job on that line
If they keep insisting on capturing him, at least bring him to a small shed for interviews and not a highly expensive facility with a ton of personnel 💀
who knew death could be petty
lol
So here is a thought provoking question. If he makes something himself like say a tent from naturally acquired materials say a tree, or a statuette from a log would those be classified as man made or would they be immune since he made them

SCP-1440
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1440 is currently uncontained and its location is unknown since its last containment breach.
- Hide
Interview Log 1440-7
Interviewer: Dr. ████
Interviewed: SCP-1440
Foreword: Following the arrival of SCP-1440 to Area-142, personnel began complaining about severe headaches and nausea.

Of course, all brothers, including 1440 are four horsemen of apocalypse.
Sounds like an even darker version of the Three Brothers tale from Harry Potter and the Deathly hallows. Only instead of an invisibility cloak, ressurection stone, and elder wand, we have a sac of holding, water of life, and death's playing cards.
Taken it like a true champ.
