As someone who's extremely useful with my hands, with the help of this video, I accomplished this task in a little under 4 hours and I didn't even lose a finger getting that serpentine belt back on. Thank you 1A Auto!🤳
Thank you! My daughter was my gopher and it took us a little over an hour going step by step slowly with your video. I used my torsion rachet with an adapter and socket that was big enough to slip over my other rachet on the serpentine tensioner. I could push down on it clockwise and slip off the belt with ease and back on as well. Subscribed and liked

Just got done replacing my alternator. Would have had a mechanic do it without this video. You guys are great! Thank you so much for posting it. Also, to anyone reading this, I highly recommend a serpentine belt removal tool. That was a big help as well.
Very informative and helpful video, I have a 2009 Ranger and this helped me every step of the way. I lost a few hours being frustrated by the fact that my belt tensioner wouldn’t move as easily as their’s did in this video, but I picked up a long ass torque wrench and it did the job. A breaker bar can also do the trick. Thank you for making this video and I appreciate the new knowledge/skill I now have.

Thanks for this. You made it look so easy, and it was. Took me maybe an hour walking back and forth to the house for tools. Only difficult part was putting the belt back on, as I had a shorter Craftsman ratchet. I was able to really easily release the tension when I finally found a pipe to extend the ratchet. I notice you had a longer handled ratchet as I did not.

I just replaced my alternator in my 2002 V6 4.0. It's a lot easier to remove the air cleaner box so you have plenty of room for the ratchet to pull far enough back when you're putting the belt back on. The air cleaner cover comes off real easy.
Great video took me less than an hour to replace my alternator in my 2004 ford ranger - would have bought a he part from a1 too except they were out of stock
Good video. As a note around 3:15, some Rangers with 4.0s actually have a bolt head on their tensioner rather than a ratchet adapter, and I've heard that on some of the 93 and older ones, the tensioner and idler are swapped in location.
Great video. The only challenge was getting socket wrench down to tensionerTight space, short man, stood on a stool. Breaker bar helped keep tension off when taking off or putting on belt. 1 hour.Otherwise, this was time but not laborious.
Great video, the only issue I had is moving the tension pully on the 4.0 engine is much harder. The pulley is so close to the fan belt, it’s hard to move it far enough from up top. Getting the belt on and off was a 2 man job.
Hey Stephen, next time just grab a 2 foot pipe to slip over that ratchet handle and use yourself some good old Archimedes leverage. It does shave some knuckle hairs with the tension pully being so close to the fan blades but if you position your handle just right and use the leverage as mentioned you can do it yourself easy enough. Hope that helps in the future.

Do you have any idea why my 96 Ford ranger won’t start without a jump, it’s not cranking at all also when I jump it the light don’t kill the battery they can be on forever
07 and up alternator is blocked by a fan shroud you have to remove to get to the alternator. Instead of being right on top it's right below the ac compressor which is on top.

The alternator is the part that provides electricity what the car is running. That electricity is what provides the spark in the spark plug. Obviously the lights, the radio, winches and other stuff uses the electricity as well. The battery is mainly used to start the car when the motor is not turning the alternator. A crude description but I hope that helps.

Seems like the ratchet adapter hole would be less prone to stripping than a bolt head, but thanks for the heads up. Luckily mine was the ratchet type.
Very helpful! I actually enjoyed doing this swap!
Right! made me feel like a real mechanic too😁

What is that yellow plastic piece for on the OLD alternator and should it be transferred as well? It is between the two lower bolt holes.
Thank you for sharing this. Made job so much easier and saved ton of cash and time.

Will the alternator on my 98 madza B2500 fit work on a 97 Ford randger.. they have the same engine
It helps that this particular part is up top.
Thanks gents. Great video!

Hey I have a question, can I also do this on my 2003 ranger 2.3L?
Do you have any idea why my 96 Ford ranger won’t start without a jump, it’s not cranking at all also when I jump it the light don’t kill the battery they can be on forever
Is the same for a Ford explorer explorer XLT 4.0L SOCH 2000? It looks similar.
What is the mounting position on the alternator? 2 o’ clock or 2:30 position? Please specify
was debating having a mechanic do mine saw this and the hardest part looks to be fiddling with the tensioner and breather tube :)
+john leininger Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks guys great video !

09 doesn't have this issue*
This looks good but I was hoping to replace my aletrantor, like the title said. This video is for alternators :(
I clicked on this video cuz of that just to see the comments lol
I was glad to know that the entire serpentine belt does not need to be removed. So why does one need a diagram?
Incase the belt falls off
Then retighten with ratchet.. then remove ratchet. 7:39

I cannot get my belt on, I loosen the tensioner but my belt won't hook on to the alternator
+kain meek If the belt is brand new, you may want to make sure that it is the correct size. Also make sure that the belt is routed correctly around the engine pulleys. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
Use a 1/2 drive long breaker bar with a cheater bar ( pipe that will fit over the breaker bar) this give you leverage and not so much effort.
thanks!
Just not strong enough to release the tension with a standard ratchet.
I can’t get them damn 13mm bolts off to save my life
thanks!!!
