GREAT video - too many so-called experts make these guys sound impossible to keep - you gave all the positives and mentioned the only real negative (in my opinion) --- "predatory instincts". They do love their live food. Did I mention GREAT video???
Thanks so much for putting this video together! I saw these guys at one of my local fish shops today and was super impressed by how beautiful they are. I think they're a bit outside of my current ability -- but definitely a species I will consider for when I'm ready to start culturing my own live food.
I've been keeping a single male in a 5.5 gallon planted nano tank (the little guy in my avatar). I've noticed he enjoys snacking on snails. In fact, he even nipped an assasin snail to death. His favorite food so far is black worms. Super cool little fish with lots of attitude and very entertaining.
I love them. I had two for about two months or so in a well-planted tank full of mosses and java ferns. I fed them live grindals and frozen brine shrimp from a glass eyedropper. They learned that the dropper meant food, and rushed up to eat when they saw it. They seemed super healthy and active, but then one suddenly died for no apparent reason. A month later, the other just disappeared. I assume it died and the trumpet snails munched on the carcass overnight. :( When I bought them, they were an obvious dominant red male and a very pale "female". The "female" became extremely bright red several days after I brought them home, so it was a male that was lower in the pecking order in the store's tank that felt more confident when in my tank.
Whelp...I WAS going to set these guys up in my 40 breeder shrimp tank...but as you said they would be snack snack snacking and chasing the shrimp 24/7...(got to somehow sneak another tank into the house) LOL
In the pet store these look dull but when they get used to the tank they glow fire red. I noticed that seems to apply to most colorful fish. These really act like gouramies and seem to be more brave; they don't run away from the light or anything.
My badis went into my tank and instantly they took a taste to my pond snails! Unexpected but fascinating -- plenty of shrimp fry in there too, it's not an act of desparation/hunger (I hope). Guess I won't have trouble finding live food to entertain them! They have absolutely 0 interest in adult shrimp or my Phoenix rasbora, so they seem perfect for my little ecosystem.
Can I keep a few of these in a 20 high with corydoras, tetras, and danios? The tank is going to be lightly decorated and planted. One medium piece of spider wood covered in xmas moss and maybe some river rock.
I have been obsessed with these guys lately. My LFS luckily has been getting them in fairly regularly and have females since they don't get picked out as much because they aren't as colorful. I just started another tank for more lol.
Great info. Have seen this fish on Aquabid and love them. Now I know what I need to be able to provide to keep them.... Live food. I LOVE what you are doing. You are teaching me a lot.
Been watching your videos for a while now but just started getting active on youtube! Just wanted to say keep up the amazing work! I love your species spotlight videos as I'm always looking for new little fish to pair off with my plecos and shrimps!
Rachel, I really wanted some fancy guppies in my 15 gallon tank but I'm worried I'll be over run by guppies. Word these little fish help keep the guppy population in check and make good tank mates? Or are they too aggressive to keep with guppies?
Kody Dryden-Conway I wonder if there is a nano freshwater clam that isn't parasitic to fish gills. It be neat to have dwarf clans just don't know if their is any
loved it, thanks for sharing, Rachel. you are right, they are too good and too interesting plus demanding in terms of live food, for beginners to be able appreciate them as much as they deserve. Thanks for sharing!
I'm thinking of upgrading my tank to a 20 gallon with just my betta and five neons tetras. I was thinking of add this fish into the tank because it's something different. I'm also changing to live plants and dirt/sand substrate. Do you think they will be compatible since they're in the barn family and Berta's do well with barbs and how many do you recommend?
+xXflamingfinnXx Eh, I am not sure how well they would do with betta. If it was my tank, I would do a loach, but dirted tanks are not good with most bottom dwellers.
I love these - mine used to hide between long broad leaves. The dealer had 50 in his tank - all males. Your iron stand in the opening scene - was it built for you or did you buy it somewhere?
someguy90876 Are you sure about that? I've read a fair few articles/posts that they can be bred in a 10 gallon. A 20 gallon seems completely ridiculous for a fish of this size to be on its own.
someguy90876 Yeah, nah, I'm sorry I just can't believe you mate there's way more evidence suggesting otherwise. Perhaps you may be thinking of the Badis Badis which grows up to 8cm which would make sense to keep in a 20 but for a fish of this size, no. In a 20 I'd be keeping a male with multiple females, maybe you should go online and do a little bit of searching, or perhaps you could provide me with some links that back up your answer?
+Sarkazmo Loafy You are correct, the problem is, they pick at/nip even the adult shrimp. I will sometimes keep colonies of shrimp with them, specifically to feed them, but it rarely works out for very long.
I love this little guy!How many types of fish do you sell?I'm in the market for some Rainbowfish and some others at the moment. Maybe I'll pop up there and see what you've got. I'm not far from you. (I just turned around on exit #4 of I83 the other day)
+Dan Hiteshew my stock list changes weekly. You can see what is ready and what is in qt (most of the time) on my website msjinkzd.com under current stocklist. I also hoard a lot of things lol
just holler if you want to swing by, we need to make an appointment as to say my schedule is hectic would be a bit of an understatement. I will also do special orders, but have to QT before they become available for purchase
I have followed you for a long time. Enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work. Question for you. I have a few planted tanks, misc fish. No problem. I want to now do my 75 gallon tank. I would like to do a all out rainbow tank. Most all rainbow. They say their water calls for a phone of 7.0. My water (tap) is 7.8. How can I reduce my tap water prior to adding fish? Once I have it at 7.0 I can buy bottled water. 75 gallons of bottled water would cost me well over $200. All else fails I may have to do this, but looking for a cheaper way for starting this 75, with all plants, rocks and driftwood. Any idea?
+urmamaha species- as for care, females of kajal are easier to definitively id, and they will often take frozen feed, as they are not quite as prey driven as dario dario
Rachel I just set up a 10 nano. It’s densely planted and I have Chili Rasboras and rcs. I had a 55 planted but took it down when landlord said too big. Thing is ph is 8.2. In 55 I had breeding angels and harlequins for 4 years no issues, same water. Will this ph be okay for my new nano tank as well?
I really want a few of these for a 40 breeder I'm setting up, but they eat shrimp :( I was hoping to put my nicer grade cherries in there to contrast the green. Maybe I can do without them. I wonder if they'd bother adult Amano shrimp?
Truly exquisite little gems.I'd love to have a clear image of a confirmed adult female, just to have a known comparative image to refer to. Only once have I had any of these fish that I could be reasonably sure were actually female. I fed them fruit fly larvae, micro and black worms, and brine shrimp. I also used to keep a population of scuds in their tank, as an 'in house' food supply they could hunt anytime they chose to. Over a period of time, they would learn to accept things like canned cyclops & frozen food items.
You and me both, I just don't buy that females are not exported. Too affordable of a fish for that to be the case. I have sold groups based on behavior that have spawned for folks.
Hi Rachel. Hope you had a great christmas and new year. Went to my lfs today not planning to buy any fish but came home with six of these little guys. One has obvious stripes and the others are all very pale. None have the striking red colouration. At the ps they had dropped flake food into the tank which hadnt been eaten. They didnt have any live foods in for sale. The tank I have mine in now has a lot of pest snails and shrimp. I assume that they will eat baby shrimp. But will they eat snails? I will have to wait for the lfs to get some live foods in. Any suggestions in the short term for these babies?
they don't generally eat snails. Microworms, baby brine, daphnia, or anything that moves (even chopped blackworms) can work as live food. SOMETIMES they will take frozen baby brine.
What’s the secret to keeping these fish alive (water parameters anyone and diet)? I have ample experience keeping fish, but not this species, however, I did get a half dozen and they lasted about 3 days. Worst experience ever. Spoke with the LFS that sold them to me and he wouldn’t work with me so I took a loss and didn’t want to try another go with these fish and this particular LFS, but I do think these fish look amazing otherwise and I would really like to give it another go once I figure out what the “ideal” water parameters are.
Do you have any videos on them? I would really love to hear your experience with them and their prefered habitat. Also, i just have to say that i really enjoy watching your videos. You are a great teacher! :D
I have 4 angel fish in my 55 with 2 gourami and 2 eclipse catfish. I just bought a corner 50 gallon and want to move the 4 angel fish into that tank, is there any small schooling fish you recommend to put in with the angel fish?
+Chicagofishkeeper Angels have an exceptionally strong prey drive, especially as adults and once they pair up. I don't recommend any fish under 2" with them.
Rachel O'leary the tiny little white ones? I treated this tank with fenbendazole for hydra, now, no hydra or plaria, but a plague of these tiny tiny ostracods
I too was going to do these fish in a 20 long aquarium..........WHERE in the UNITED STATES is the BEST place to BUY/ORDER them from????Anybody help me here please
Flyingwonders26 not sure on a good place to order them... I know my LFS has them but he is also a wholesale/wharehouse so he has a huge variety of fish.
How would these go in a 20 gal heavily planted tank with a dozen guppies and 6 amano shrimp? Would they help keep the guppy fry population under control or are they too small?
they would likely eat the newest hatched guppies- maybe. I find that guppy fry tend to go up to the surface, which is not where the darios tend to hang out.
Thanks. I was going to keep these but since I ruptured the tendons in my shoulder planted tanks are my bane. I'm too anal about keeping stuff in order. I like small fish but I don't want to keep things and make their lives suck.
Those were cool little fish they don't act like other little fish they're more like predators thinking not move all the time like little fish do cause they're scared. These guys don't look scared they're weird for little fish, super cool.
Cool. Fun fact: a name with the genus and species is called a tautonym. That is allowed in the code of nomenclature that covers zoology, but NOT in the one that covers plants and fungi (and a few other things).
Thx for highlighting these fishies.... Theve become my 2nd fav😍 fishies after blue mosses😍 Hope i have their spell right...correct me if i am wrong... Thx 1s again....

Absolutely without a doubt one of my most favorite fish to keep! "Sassy" is totally appropriate! Great spotlight, Rachel!
+Jen Williams oh hey jen!
I've been keeping a single male in a 5.5 gallon planted nano tank (the little guy in my avatar). I've noticed he enjoys snacking on snails. In fact, he even nipped an assasin snail to death. His favorite food so far is black worms.

Favorite fish! I've been patiently waiting for it's time to shine.
Cutest Little Predator
I love them. I had two for about two months or so in a well-planted tank full of mosses and java ferns. I fed them live grindals and frozen brine shrimp from a glass eyedropper. Gorgeous fish!! Who's eyes are peering into the tank at 4:35, creeeeepy!!!!
Cutest Little Predator !
How many would you suggest for a 'nano' community (36"x18"x18")? Lots of plants, rocks and wood, and sharing with ember tetra, otos and c. habrosus.
Can they live off of frozen food?
What can i keep them with in a 6 gallon?
Can I keep a few of these in a 20 high with corydoras, tetras, and danios? The tank is going to be lightly decorated and planted. One medium piece of spider wood covered in xmas moss and maybe some river rock.
please make a video on substrates for nano fish and small fish
Cutest little Predator !
I have a group of black tiger badis are they the same species just a deffrent color?
I have been obsessed with these guys lately. My LFS luckily has been getting them in fairly regularly and have females since they don't get picked out as much because they aren't as colorful. I just started another tank for more lol.
One of my absolute all time favorite percoid fish species!
Can they coexist in a 11 gal with a sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumila) male? They are much smaller.
Great info. Have seen this fish on Aquabid and love them. Now I know what I need to be able to provide to keep them.... Live food.
I LOVE what you are doing. You are teaching me a lot.

hey I was wondering if you would ever think about doing a spotlight on some sort of freshwater clam
+Kody Dryden-Conway I don't actually keep any. So maybe if I get some in the future.
+Rachel O'leary Okay I just asked because I think they sound like they could be fun but I don't know much about them I guess I will look into for now
Kody Dryden-Conway I wonder if there is a nano freshwater clam that isn't parasitic to fish gills. It be neat to have dwarf clans just don't know if their is any
I have a 5.5 gal planted and wondering on what to do for it. Scarlet Badis good thing I saw this video!
Would Cyclops or Mysis work?
+Hooked On Fish Cyclops for sure, mysis are probably too large
loved it, thanks for sharing, Rachel. you are right, they are too good and too interesting plus demanding in terms of live food, for beginners to be able appreciate them as much as they deserve. Thanks for sharing!
I’m not sure if you’ve already done it but can you do a video on a rope fish??
can i keep then in a 50 gallon community with corydoras and albino pleco
Just an update I currently have a small group in my tank and I have noticed that they per date on bladder snail eggs.
Please talk about pea puffers
+Omar K Johnson I actually have pea puffers coming in Thursday, so this may be doable in the future.
Thanks i am thinking between these and german blue rams. Do you have an opinion on which?
I'm thinking of upgrading my tank to a 20 gallon with just my betta and five neons tetras. I was thinking of add this fish into the tank because it's something different. Your iron stand in the opening scene - was it built for you or did you buy it somewhere?
Can I keep 1 of these fish in a 5 gallon heavily planted tank with a few neon tetras?
Are scarlet badis shrimp and microcrab safe?
yes they are but the scarlet will eat juvelin shrimp thou.
can 1 of these be kept in a 5 gallon tank by himself
jordi lizaola of course even a few 2-3 they're tiny fish barely reach an inch in size if lucky
no
someguy90876 Are you sure about that? I've read a fair few articles/posts that they can be bred in a 10 gallon. A 20 gallon seems completely ridiculous for a fish of this size to be on its own.

someguy90876 Fair enough
Will this fish predate all shrimp or just the babies? Being so small adult (Neo)Caradina are as large if not larger than the fish.
+Sarkazmo Loafy You are correct, the problem is, they pick at/nip even the adult shrimp. I will sometimes keep colonies of shrimp with them, specifically to feed them, but it rarely works out for very long.
I would love to see a species spotlight of dicrossus filamentosus
What plant are you using in the tank with them? The frilly one that they really seem to like.
Cam you just feed them tubifex worms?
I have one could i keep another with him in my 29 gallon ?
RADaquatics here- Rachel how much for those "supposed" female badis? I've got 3 males and am building a badis only tank now.
+RAD Aquatics I am not going to sell them separate, sort of ruins the chances for folks who buy a group if I sell out all the known females.

just holler if you want to swing by, we need to make an appointment as to say my schedule is hectic would be a bit of an understatement. I will also do special orders, but have to QT before they become available for purchase
Hi Rachel, i didnt get one thing they will eat my shrimp adults also?
no
what fish should i get to go with my big clown loaches, preferably something from south east asia that is big enough not to be eaten
I have followed you for a long time. Enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work. Question for you. I have a few planted tanks, misc fish. No problem. I want to now do my 75 gallon tank. Rainbows will likely be just fine in your source water
What's the difference between the Dario Dario and the Dario kajal?
+urmamaha species- as for care, females of kajal are easier to definitively id, and they will often take frozen feed, as they are not quite as prey driven as dario dario

Adults are too big for them to eat. Bigger than adult Dario in fact

Rachel, have you ever tried to keep the Badis Badis?
yes, as well as badis ruber.

Can you keep them with chili rasbora
Yes
How much do they cost each
Looks like a small paradise fish
Great stuff Rachel!! I love these little guys❤❤
Will these fish eat the tiny ostracods?
ii just made an "ehhhhhh" sound out loud. They would have to be pretty tiny ostracods.
Rachel O'leary the tiny little white ones? I treated this tank with fenbendazole for hydra, now, no hydra or plaria, but a plague of these tiny tiny ostracods
Do you have any for sale?
one of my tiger darios jumped out of my fish tank recently. I don't know why:(
Can I keep one in my 5.5 gallon.
My scarlet gems get along just fine with German rams a female Betta and 3 dwarf frogs, and they eat solely flakes and hikari cichlid gold
Try the link to Rachel's store in the vid description, ;)
Thank you very much
Has anyone kept a single Scarlet Badis with cherry shrimp?
Are all Dario dario wild caught?
+Phil Hoover yes
are just your dario wild caught rachael, as someone near me breeds these?
yes, mine are
Would you have a pair for sale
Will they eat bloodworms ?
I've read that they will, but can have obesity problems with those and tubifex. I am not sure that's true, but something to think about.
hi.. do you sell a pair worldwide?
No
Any info on Goby Peacock Gudgeon
Yup! ruclips.net/video/IMyLiU5r4OI/видео.html
I got 6 of these and they all have vanished but my tetras still there.
can i feed them cherry shrimp??
+CoolGuyPerez yes, juveniles
Well narrated!
I have a question , would these fish do well in a well stablished community tank with neon tetras ,female bettas and Ramshorn??
Please do Blue King Tetra
+Subrata Das (শুভ শুভ্র ভার্শন ১.০) Knodis borki? Great fish! I haven't had those for awhile
Nice. I like the red on these.
Super neeto Rachel , thanks
How would these go in a 20 gal heavily planted tank with a dozen guppies and 6 amano shrimp? Would they help keep the guppy fry population under control or are they too small?
they would likely eat the newest hatched guppies- maybe. I find that guppy fry tend to go up to the surface, which is not where the darios tend to hang out.
I'm desperate to find a female scarlet badis. Can anyone help?
Thanks. I was going to keep these but since I ruptured the tendons in my shoulder planted tanks are my bane. I'm too anal about keeping stuff in order. I like small fish but I don't want to keep things and make their lives suck.
they are amazing little fishies a lot of fun to watch
Yeah!! Request granted!!
it's about time. Love this fish
would be nice to see a spotlight for pygmy sunfish
+Ironiic zero Any particular species? I am a fan of the pygmy sunfish, as well.
+Rachel O'leary elassoma gilberti
+Rachel O'leary Yes please on the pygmy sunfish! elassoma gilberti!
The scarlet bad ass💯😂🐠❤️🔥
I love these little guys!

Cool.

can u send 6 badis scarlet in Ukraine? what a price?
I only ship within the united states, sorry
Rachel O'leary I can not find them anywhere in the world 😞
Thx for highlighting these fishies....
Theve become my 2nd fav😍 fishies after blue mosses😍
Hope i have their spell right...correct me if i am wrong...
Thx 1s again....
Great video!
Awesome! Looks like I'm DEFINITELY setting up a tank for these beautiful fish. Thanks a bunch!
love your tank I have some badis
cool fish there
When they are collected from the wild, the females dive into the substrate and males stand their ground.
Cool
i have three dario kajals :)
