A low effort but high reward hack is using laksa paste from a jar! Think: umani, tangy, spicy, sour (and a little colourful too!). Otherwise, I adore pickled mustard greens (sauteed and diced) for crunch and brightness. Have also recently enjoyed caramalising canned corn with some butter and condensed milk. The result is lightly sweet and charred popping pearls.

I love to add edamame or other beans for extra protein and fibre to my fried rice, and I also like to add extra grains to my rice as well like barley. I live in Japan and can easily get bags of premixed mixed grains to add to my rice, it’s nice for different textures and good for gut health!
Maitake mushrooms are also delicious in fried rice.

If you have Bun Rieu paste in the house I love making fried rice with it. The paste with a little soy and green onions, and whatever veg with scrambled / fried egg. Alternatively with turmeric/curry powder and peanuts, dried shrimp, fried onions and chopped corriander.

Delish!! 😋 Save me a plate. I'm like you, I use a ton of white pepper. I gotta try the szechwan peppercorns and incorporate that into my fried rice, including the pretty lacy egg.
I'm just curious (Non-Asian gal here). Did I see correctly? Did you grab soy sauce & sesame oil from the pantry? Do you you not store these items in the fridge? What do you recommend?
I wanna do everything Christine does!! 🥰

Yum! I’ve never thought to add pineapple! I usually add edamame to mine because I have that on regular rotation instead of peas. Love adding chilli garlic oil on top too
