Labour leadership contender Lisa Nandy had a heated debate with Piers Morgan this morning about whether transgender athletes should be able to compete. The debate follows transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard attempting to qualify for Tokyo as rules say if her testosterone is below certain levels for 12 months then she can compete. But is it fair on other athletes to let her compete and who should make those decisions?

I don't always agree with piers but I am happy to see him speak up for women rights when Lisa who is clearly a woman do not see the need to. How far have we fallen as a society to be having this conversation. I respect anyone who choose to identify as anything but don't force it onto others. Just create neutral games for transgenders to compete amongst themselves.

Women’s rights should be protected. You can’t ignore that is attacking women’s right. The female athletes could as well stop any sports. What rules? Female and male have different biological bodies.

I think she could, but she just refused. Maybe she either realized she was out of her element & didn't prepare enough or she memorized what she was going to say and when it didn't go the way she planned she panicked. I'm wildly speculating but that's all I could think of lol

I really don't like piers morgan, but i do agree with him on this. The examples he gave (which are not just outlandish hypotheticals, and in the case of the nz weight lifter is actually happening right now) ARE completely unfair and it's so frustrating that so many people are so terrified of being accused as transphobic that they tap dance around and twist themselves into pretzels to avoid giving THE OBVIOUS ANSWER.
I don't know what the solution is, but to just shrug our shoulders and say "well that's just how it is now" is not acceptable.
Its not a false war. Ask female athletes (confidentially to protect them and yield true responses) and I'm pretty sure you'll find they don't want to compete against trans women due to the unfairness. It has zero to do with lack of compassion and everything to do with fairness

This is a biological question. If you have gone through puberty as a man, you develop musculature different from a woman. Period. Full stop. Even if you take testosterone treatment, you have that advantage of development at puberty. So, no, obviously they shouldn't be able to compete. Now, if someone gets puberty blockers and hormone treatment to nullify that advantage, that's a different story. This has nothing to do with treatment of marginalized people with compassion and sensitivity. We're talking about athletic competition, a specific, organized activity based on physical reality. We in the United States have politicians, such as Katie Porter whom I like, not able to answer this question honestly. And I do believe it is because they are afraid of losing support as politicians.

Why can Ms Nandy not simply answer the question if it’s fair that a man identifying as a women should compete against women in a sport. There is no more broader issues to consider it’s a simple yes or no question. Of course she doesn’t think it’s fair but she is never going to admit that because most of her other points on transgender are going to be invalidated when she has to answer honestly. She is after votes and she simply isn’t going to shoot herself in the foot by admitting a simple truth and alienating those she is pandering to for their votes.

She is not even answering an obvious question to clarify her position. A commission or committee is supposed to have a stand or position for fair competition. That is why labor party wont win in near future. Again, no one is against trans. We just need fairness. Piers did a great job revealing the hypocrisy in tis woman.

The outrageous one here is Lisa. This is not about picking one group against another, as she’s saying. I’m happy Morgan is supporting women rights, more people need to. Yes, there need to be rules - you need to be an actual woman to compete in women’s sports,should be the first and only rule! I’m not an athlete, but I’m very concerned for young female athletes now. It must be devastating for them to see what’s happening now, must lose all their motivation. Cause how can they even compete anymore if trans women with a male anatomy is allowed to compete again them? It’s a dangerous development, this. Thank you, Morgan, for being their voice and supporter.
