Just bought my first straight razor from Art of Shaving and finished scraping off my beard. It is definitely NOT as easy as this video or Skyfall makes it look! It's definitely an art and the razor demands respect and careful attention! But I can definitely see and feel the quality of this shave. I'm fully converted! Practice, practice, practice!
I literally started today! You're right! This guy must have started with a very fine fuzz or was just pushing cream around. I have heard the alternative of course is to start with an oil before the cream, so that the razor has lubricant at all times. Hope your a pro by now!
Andres Rodriguez Guapacha I used a straight to shave my head after I stopped using the cartridges and before I went to the vintage safety because it was quicker before work. But it is not that hard as you would think. The key is finding the direction of the hair growth on the different parts of your head and making sure to go with the grain for the first pass.
I never thought it could be possible, at least not oneself.... but it seems to need steady hands! hehehe.... I will buy a straight razor but I am not sure when will I try to do a headshave by myself. Thanks for the answers!
Andres Rodriguez Guapacha The funny thing is that I have had more nicks(nothing major) with my safety than my straight. The one thing you have to realize is that straights tend to be less sharp and less flexible because they are not as thin as DE blades or modern cartridge blades but they don't have a safety bar so as long as you place the blade with the correct angle before you take a shaving stroke you will be ok and true you do need a steady hand but don't sell yourself short. Let me know when you pull the plug on one!
David Haynes Not sure about that one, with the rigth method, you can get your stragth razor even sharper than an out of the package safety razor - at least mine does.

This video actually got me started with a STRAIGHT RAZOR 6 years ago. I've got my bumps and bruises (cuts...lol) along the way but I've gotten the shave down to a science. It's the only way I shave nowadays, and I've never used any Gillette Style disposable shaver ever since. "Once you go Straight Razor, you never go back."
I changed to a straight razor a month ago or so and its the best thing i ever did. I have a beard so all I do is edge and shape it so the straight razor was best investment ever. Sharp sharp lines and its incredibly fulfilling to shave in such a manly fashion. A lot easier than you first think but only if you're careful and take time learning it as you start using it.
that is a hanging strop, it is a piece of fine leather, with a piece of fine canvas or linen on the other side. A strop is used to smooth, and and realign the blade. Because a straight razor is super thin thinner than even fine kitchen knives, it requires frequent honing or polishing to remove the rough edges. Before you begin shaving you should strop your blade, a good starting point is 20 passes on the linen side first, then 40 passes on the leather side. always strop your razor spine (non bladed side) first as running it the other way can damage your razor edge possibly requiring you to resharpen/hone your razor, and will cut into the strop. run it down the length of the strop and roll it on the spine and run it back to strop the other side. And that's it
I started with Double Edge Safety Razors. I took a liking to it instantly. After a year I was drawn to try Straight Razors. While visiting Slazlburg Austria I passed a shop with a number of Straight Razors displayed in the store front window. They were beautiful. Ended up buying a Dovo Prima Klan and mailed it home. Allow 30-45 minutes to shave. After about 10 shaves you'll start getting the hang of it and improve in your skills. Take your time; It's an art so enjoy it! Well worth it just for the experience..
I've used a straight razor for 15 years. Yea, I have a beard, but I clean up my neck line and cheeks once or twice a week. The shaves were pretty bad at first. I wasn't good at keeping it super sharp, and I'd frequently nick myself. But now, i can get it out, lather up, strop and shave pretty quick. The shave is good, and I never get irritation. I always had razor bumps when I used a modern razor. I've saved a lot of money on razor blades, much more than the initial straight razor investment. It's really worth learning to do.
Just completed my first ever straight razor shave. Although I only did 1 with-the-grain pass, it was one of the best shaves I've ever had. Not only did I get almost no razor burn (so little I almost went without aftershave), I actually felt really comfortable and relaxed, despite the fact I was scraping a potential murder weapon across my face. Also, I can't help but feel like a complete badass knowing I just shaved with, as Bill puts it, something that looks like a torture device.
Just to clarify, it was your first ever shave with a straight razor. How are you feeling so great? After my first shave, my face looked like Freddy Krueger's face.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. After watching this video, I've had some success using my straight razor. and being left-handed, it was an even more bigger challenge, but it was worth it. Thanks again! Cheers, Bob
Yeah, I have been shaving with a straight razor the last few years, It's awesome. And much, much less expensive than a turbo-mach 10 blade, BS razor that gets tossed away each time. The warm soap is way nicer than the cold crap from a can. The initial cost can be high but it will save you lots of money in the long run. I use Bay Rum aftershave, the ladies love it!

I'm a woman who grows facial hair due to hormonal issues. I use a safety razor to tackle that now and can handle that tool quite well, but thinking of upgrading to a straight razor, so thought I'd look up how to do it before buying one. Cause yeah, I like the history behind them, and I'm a sucker for cool things from the past too. And I just have to learn how to use a straight razor before I get rid of my facial hair for good with laser. The video is hilarious! I can totally relate to Bill there a bit.
i personally use a quattro for 3-5 months before replacing them... want a straight razor but seeing as i shave once a week to 2 weeks, its hard to justify the initial 2-300$ cost. good razor, straup, (also 1000 if you go cheap and get an old razor and sharpen it up) 4000-8000 whetstone... yea... hard to justify
I, up until today, was a proud beard wearer. But, money calls and a consistent shave is due much to my displeasure. But, if I'm going to shave, I'm going to do it the right way like this gentleman.
Lmao I came here to seriously learn how to use it . And to be honest . I can’t say I’m disappointed . Now I just have to execute it . But the way this was filmed the music . The dialogue . A true work of art lmao thanks
As a newby to the world of straight razors, this was a start but now that I’ve been doing it a couple months, it’s far from complete unless you’re not interested in a close shave. Best advise, take your time, watch the angle and it’s not a squeegee. Soft strokes. A good hollow ground razor that has been honed and stopped. You’ll probably go through a few shave soaps before you find one you like.
Literally watching this while I shave with a straight razor given to me in Burcharest by a babushka because it reminded her "of the old days", her grandfather and that I was the only one in years that needed blades. She gave me blades, an heirloom straight razor and cream! Haha Like watching masterchef whilst eating. This one of those pleasures, in a rush I can shave within five minutes, but this is a beautiful process for guys. Never used a safety or modern razor. Never needed to anyways. Technique goes a long way - pull the face away from the blade. Let it work for you.
Do the Frankenstein test, basically, put a finger at the bottom of each sideburn and see if they are aligned. If not, make small adjustments in length and recheck until they are aligned well.
I folded, spindled, mutilated, and ultimately burned my man card by being on estrogen for over 12 years, but I'm still interested in getting and using a straight razor on my face. I currently use a double-edged safety razor with the Feather brand blade. AS A FOLLOWUP: I got a staight razor and am learning how to use it. I am up to shaving both cheeks after two sessions.
Careful if you travel a lot by plane. The straight razor would have to go into checked baggage or stay home if you only fly with carry-ons. It makes safeties and electrics a lot more convenient in that sense. Or just be ready to switch to a safety or electric for the duration of your trips. Not a big deal overall, but something to remember.
Absolutely easy to follow and very well presented. Thank you for helping me finally learn how to do this. Im happy as hell to get away from the disposable razor and stop paying thru the nose for those damn things! I now use a Russian straight razor with really neat bakelite handle made in 1952 in the former Soviet Union. All sorts of inexpensive ones can be had via Etsy in all different colors and blade styles.
never switch hands unless you are 100% ambidextrous i.e. your left hand is equal to your right. if you want to find out, just try the razon without the blade
I shave with a high quality Dovo straight razor, a badger hair brush and horse hide strop. Never spending money on those crappy disposables or cartridges ever again. A straight razor is something you can pass down you your son and teach him to be a man. =)
Xanifur Maybe it would just take me longer because I'd be afraid of cutting my throat. I don't know, it just seems like guys who shave with straight razors are more careful and take their time a little more.
+WilliamRayWalters like anything else it just muscle memory. To be honest, when i switched,I started to enjoy shaving again. The ritual of mixing the cream, taking the time to not slit your throat open. I enjoy the time I have by myself before heading for work. Not everything is about speed, and this is pure enjoyment
Shaving with a straight razor has also helped me with questioning my masculinity a great deal, definitely the classiest, manliest way to shave out there
Really enjoyed this complete retro vi. My dad was a barber, yet never showed me how to use a straight razor ( sadly passed away at a young age. I wish I had his barber razor strop. He did go to barber school. This was very complex. I do wish it also included how to sharpen your straight razor. I enjoyed this video
Your video has inspired me to try my own hand at straight razor shaving, appreciating both the natural simplicity, the zen of the ritual, and ultimately the more consistently clean shave that arises........and yet I must admit that I'm in no hurry to shuck out $150 for a flat piece of metal on a pivot, no matter how spiffy. I understand such is an investment over always buying terrible disposal razor blades, however for someone such as myself who has never tried straight razor shaving, but does not want to go "balls in" without knowing for sure it will end up being my preferred method, nor wishes to buy a $20 worthless item that immediately puts me off the whole idea, I admit I don't know where to go from here. I was hoping that perhaps, for both myself and others, you could also include a link to a second price-option straight razor that is still of basic quality but won't break the bank of any respectable gent looking to first try his hand at the art?
If you're good with honing you can get a cheap gold dollar brand razor and put a real shaving edge on it. But unless you have the honing equipment, that's also expensive.
@Art of Manliness: thx 4 sharing ur helpful tutorial. It inspired me to use a hot towel today, my first one using one @ home, as the well the skin stretching technique. Was an enjoyable & relaxing experience & resulted in a smoother shave than in my past. Since I don't yet own a straight razor, I just used my regular Gillette razor, but I still ended up w/ a smoother shave than in my past.
I did this once. Now every man I walk past smells like a mighty tasty meat pie...... But I need a Victorian goth to help me prepare them................
I’ve been using a straight on and off for about eight or so months now and I actually got really accustomed to using it. I only Cut myself about three times total, so not bad!! 🤞🏻😅. It feels weird using a straight razor against the grain because it doesn’t feel like a effective like a safety razor and good DE blade . It actually feels like it’s irritating but it’s really not I don’t get razor burn all on my cheeks at all Surprisingly. Because it really feels like in your scraping the hair off instead of cutting it lol taking a lot of skin off with the hair but the closer you get to the scam the less tug there is! A good rule to remember is put the straight razor flat against your skin and lift it about a spine width. That’ll give you a good place to start! …I.E Reference point
I found out that dollar shave club have also posted anti-male stuff in the past :( but they recently deleted it because of the stuff happening to Gillette

I, up until today, was a proud beard wearer. But, money calls and a consistent shave is due much to my displeasure. But, if I'm going to shave, I'm going to do it the right way like this gentleman.
I've been shaving with a straight razor for a year now and would never go back to a safety razor!
I just "upgraded" my Fusion Pro Glide with a knife. Best shaving ever. Thanks grand pa
Real men shave with a machete
Ah, a fellow shave enthusiast...
A machete? Yeah if you're a 15/16-year old BOY and just learning how. MEN use a guillotine.
@@sean.furlong1989 Guillotines aren't sharp. They're just really heavy
@@theguywhoisaustralian1465 that's where the skill comes in
Personally I just let the hairs freeze and break them off
best straightrazor shaving video on the internet! !!!!
SO MUCH HARDER THAN IT LOOKS HOLY FUCK MY FACE IS BLEEDING LIKE CRAZY
It takes practice the first few shaves were hell for me now after a few weeks I'm a pro at it
Thomas Liebrecht practice on others first
lmao
@@johnathansheffield6208😂😂😂😂
Lmao I came here to seriously learn how to use it . And to be honest . I can’t say I’m disappointed . Now I just have to execute it . But the way this was filmed the music . The dialogue . A true work of art lmao thanks
When I lived in Alaska we were out camping and my friends and I gave eachother a shave with an axe.
Damn how did that feel
As a newby to the world of straight razors, this was a start but now that I’ve been doing it a couple months, it’s far from complete unless you’re not interested in a close shave. Best advise, take your time, watch the angle and it’s not a squeegee. Soft strokes. A good hollow ground razor that has been honed and stopped. You’ll probably go through a few shave soaps before you find one you like.
Excellent video! Going to buy a straight razor right now!
Excellent. Love the "Old School" vibe and also the jab at "Bill" at the end. Good stuff.
Holy shit this was hilarious..."Sharp steel against your throat every-morning reminds you that you are alive"
Literally watching this while I shave with a straight razor given to me in Burcharest by a babushka because it reminded her "of the old days", her grandfather and that I was the only one in years that needed blades. She gave me blades, an heirloom straight razor and cream! Haha
Like watching masterchef whilst eating.
This one of those pleasures, in a rush I can shave within five minutes, but this is a beautiful process for guys.
Never used a safety or modern razor. Never needed to anyways.
Technique goes a long way - pull the face away from the blade. Let it work for you.
Thanks guys I was a bit disappointed at first with my straight razor but now I think I can make it :)
Brilliant video, we need more tutorials in an older fashion such as this.
Shaving my sideburns is the hardest for me. They never look aligned, always slightly off
Do the Frankenstein test, basically, put a finger at the bottom of each sideburn and see if they are aligned. If not, make small adjustments in length and recheck until they are aligned well.
use a comb and grid a line from any part of the ear to the nose or lip and repeat the same on the other side, hope it helps.
Thanks to both of you for your replies
I folded, spindled, mutilated, and ultimately burned my man card by being on estrogen for over 12 years, but I'm still interested in getting and using a straight razor on my face. I currently use a double-edged safety razor with the Feather brand blade.
AS A FOLLOWUP: I got a staight razor and am learning how to use it. I am up to shaving both cheeks after two sessions.
I tried using a straight razor today and all I did was butcher my face
Takes practice and a steady hand.
I get that out come with a safety razor and it makes me mad.
looks like ur momma already did that for you. ouch..
Jannik Raeder Damn bro that's cold af
sorry i could'nt help myself
All sorts of inexpensive ones can be had via Etsy in all different colors and blade styles.
did you make the move away from disposables? i love wetshaving. regards dapper shaves
Very helpful and I loved the ending! 🙂
3:15 that seriously made me laugh 😅
3:37 it would have been funny if "Bill" would have said before the guy finished talking "But wait!,I want to know what people are sayinggg!!!" 😂🤣
what about the left side of my face? do I switch hands? or do I use my right hand still?
Important questions. I'm still trying to stop the bleeding.
Zellieth ideally you switch hands
Okay thanks
never switch hands unless you are 100% ambidextrous i.e. your left hand is equal to your right. if you want to find out, just try the razon without the blade
Zellieth you need to switch hands: right hand for right side of the face, left hand for the left side of the face.
dude I just bought one and left the bathroom with 4 bleeding gashes in my face. I’m never doing this again.😃
Practice, practice, practice!
I just ordered one. Here’s hoping
Lol bro I bought my razor 3-4 months ago and have only just bought some blades, safe to say it'll probably be another 3-4 months before I use it
Now you have cool scars though, free bonus
Good Lord, I never realized how much effort it takes to maintain these things. All the accessories and maintenance is insane
BigRedChester i just use ones with replaceable blades
I just use a straight edge. Replaceable blades are dirt cheap and saves me the leather strap business.
This is my first AoM video and i’m sold. Good tutorial! Sub added!
Such a wonderful website and videos.
Thanks!
This old school style is amazing!
I shave with a high quality Dovo straight razor, a badger hair brush and horse hide strop. Never spending money on those crappy disposables or cartridges ever again. A straight razor is something you can pass down you your son and teach him to be a man. =)
Xanifur How much longer does it take vs the cartridges though?
Why would it take longer? It's the same if not faster. One blade lasts a lifetime.
Xanifur Maybe it would just take me longer because I'd be afraid of cutting my throat. I don't know, it just seems like guys who shave with straight razors are more careful and take their time a little more.
Meh, I just jumped right into it. Never cut myself
Shaving with a straight razor has also helped me with questioning my masculinity a great deal, definitely the classiest, manliest way to shave out there
real men use broken shards of obsidian
lets go 🔥
Really enjoyed this complete retro vi. My dad was a barber, yet never showed me how to use a straight razor ( sadly passed away at a young age. I wish I had his barber razor strop. He did go to barber school. This was very complex. I do wish it also included how to sharpen your straight razor. I enjoyed this video
Love those glasses! What are they?
I love your production style Well done

Lmao me too.
Same here playa
Simple and to the point. This is a great opening tutorial, thank you guys.
I love these videos, so funny, entertaining and informative.
"People say things Bill"

Nice! Sorry to spam your mailbox after 4 years xD
I’ve been shaving with a safety razor for about 5 years or so I really wanna give this a shot
Gillette is definitely helping men become their best selves now... We all decided to grow up and use straight blades and dollar shave club.
I found out that dollar shave club have also posted anti-male stuff in the past :( but they recently deleted it because of the stuff happening to Gillette
And MGTOW is gaining steam.
