I think the main reason this scene was such a jaw-dropper was because up until this point most fights in the series are two or three episodes long, and Hiei just one-shots this guy like six minutes into an episode more or less, which kind of sets up a lot of his other fights in the series: while the others fuck around a whole bunch, generally Hiei's fights last a very brief time due to his fondness for ridiculous overkill.
11 years later but it depends on the situation. Short fights vs nobodies work out, but longer fights also work - Hiei vs Bui for example, but in other times like Hiei vs Mukuro does not work.

He eventually learned to control it by trapping the flames in his body and forcing his body to acclimate to them to the extent the flames can no longer hurt him.

I'm a manga guy first and foremost but man the imagery in this is something else. I love seeing Hiei actually pull the hellfire out from the earth as well as just how much strain it puts on his body. I didn't love how they made the fight between him and Seiryu longer because it was meant to show just how much Hiei eclipsed everyone else at the time, forcing Yusuke to catch up. This is the same as the manga but using the less limited space to give the attack more weight. Sometimes less is more and sometimes more is more
Meh. I felt manga version was supposed to seem cool in theory but was very anticlimactic. Anime version was still short but still got the point across while giving a good fight
Hiei. The one who would go on to inspire the rival trope in every shounen anime that followed, and even becoming the inspiration for several very important characters from popular franchises. I'll let you google which one's drew from his influence :D.
I always loved these type of anime characters the most. The anti hero. Hiei, Vegeta, gatotsu.. they just seem like far more interesting and complex character types.. and when they redeem themselves it always makes for an amazing character arc. I cannot wait to see dragon of the darkness flame in the live action series.
This is the very first time during the anime series that we see Hiei use this incredible attack, this is one of my personal favorite attacks from any anime series and this attack is amazing by the representation of the dark energy from the spirit/ demon world. This is one of Hiei's classic attacks/ techniques and the "dragon of the darkness flame" attack is well recognized by the Yu Yu Hakusho fan base and is always an enjoyment to see in action.
Hiei was such a badass....this series needs like a reboot with beautiful modern day animation...like imagine madhouse or something animating this scene....
