    I didn't see it and you didn't say.. but anytime you have cracks you should drill a hole on either side to help keep the crack from spreading further before welding.

    A great lesson on why and how to box in C-channel

  • @arturm.8106
    @arturm.8106 Год назад

    It's not a issue of C-shape frame. I'm sorry to say (write) that, but you made some construkction mistake with this conversion to coil springs and multi link rear suspension. That frame was designed to a different geometry of forces. I'm sure that only boxing C-shape wouldn't be enaf. You should added new elements to existing frame:
    1. single or double beam(s) (perpendicular to C-shape frame) to connect upper mounting points of coil springs
    2. same crossing beam connecting upper (quite long) mount of panhard with driver side of the main frame, to transfer horizontal forces to both C-shape main elements of the frame. By the way, panhard should be horizontal in neutral position of suspension.
    Look on the Nissan Patrol G60/61 or Mercedes G-wagon frames, how it's should be done.
    I hope to see you and yours Chevy in next super off-road trips :)

    Seriously, at this point the rear frame is junk. Never going to be anything more than lipstick on a pig.
    Do it right and chop the frame off and start over. Everywhere you plated in you just moved all the flex to a much smaller area and made what you didn't plate is now seeing more abuse than it was before it originally broke. Plan on chasing it around the truck until you get smart and start fresh

    Next time do not weld vertically on the frame web. Just make an arrow and run the weeks down smooth at the tip. Otherwise you will cause stress risers and a fresh frame crack.

    Something I see on trophy trucks is a x brace horizontally at the rear of the frame. I wonder if that would be something you'd entertain since it would brace the trac bar, omit the factory over spare cross member, and brace the future bumper brackets. might just be lighter and stronger than all those cross members out back

    If you have a piece of leftover DOM that can span the width of the frame, I would weld that in as a cross member (with a little more frame plating of course.) Then add a few simple gussets. Sort of like the big tube in the front of a TJ's frame. There's so many different forces in that suspension setup that greatly exceed the frame's capacity, that I wouldn't trust a heim joint link off of the panhard.
    I love this build by the way 🤙
