Regarding the Insulator The metallic bag I used was actually tuned inside out you can see by the double sided tape on it in the video so was not conductive but maybe was not the best choice to demonstrate it. Next video I shall suggest using Paper or cardboard or something and maybe doing it in the other slot as some viewers suggested.
I was litterally coming into the comments to say "isn't that bag conductive?", but this makes sense. My preference would be a bit of kapton tape on the underside of the card, I think. Thermally conductive, so it won't cook the card, but not electrically conductive.
You could probably use an old DVD case, cut in half and tape it to the card using a little electrical tape, or just place it there over the ram like you've done with the baggy.
The card on the cable is MNT ZZ9000CX ECS/AGA Video Slot adapter, has nothing to do with Zorro3. This is stated several times in the manual The 1GB of ram is the two chips to the left of the FPGA on the daughterboard. The 8 chips just above the 100 pin edge connector is NOT ram, its 8 74LVC8T245 chips that translates the Amigas 5 volt down to 3.3 that the FPGA runs on.
Yeah, that card on the cable reminded me of the little board you broke off of the Picasso IV and connected with the included cables since the A2000's video slot was not inline with a Zorro slot.
1:22 "This, I assume, is the 1 gig of RAM" - I'm pretty sure those are level shifters. The Amiga, of course, uses good old 5V logic, which would roast modern FPGAs, which usually can only handle up to 3.3V logic levels. The 1 gig of RAM would be the two BGA-style devices next to the FPGA.
Unlike claimed at 1:12, the extension board has nothing to do with Zorro III. It is the AGA video slot extension to the card, this is where it captures the mainboard's video. Both ZII and ZIII protocols go over the same 100 pin Zorro connector. The video slot part is "broken out" so one can make a longer cable to install it in an A2000, where the video slot is on the other side of the PSU, and not in line with a Zorro slot. Great review video otherwise.
@@studioxxswe Well, I said AGA because it has the extra pins for 24bit color, unlike its predecessor the CX2000 for the VA2000. But yeah, thanks to it's flexible keying, it works in an OCS/ECS machine indeed.

Your "insulating material" may indeed insulate as part of the bag is dielectric plastic and only part of it is conductive metal but .. yeah, maybe there's nothing at all more too it but somehow it seem a bit weird to choose a metallic bag as insulator but sure it's not all metal =P. And it likely do have a static dissipative coating so I guess that may be an advantage vs some other plastic sheet which doesn't. If I remember correctly I used cardboard and one of the colored not metal bags around my 3.5" HDD in the Amiga 1200 without being a pro on what to do and of course if the cardboard can become hot enough that's not a good idea.
So I did some research and silver metalic esd bags are conductive both outside and inside with a resistance above 10mohm to safely dissipate any static charge slowly. I really only used to think they where the coolest looking ones but it turns out they are the best kind of esd bags for transporting and storing esd sensitive stuff.

Retro gaming is not dead by no means, never have I seen a computer being updated after 20 years. Poeple are still making money on upgrades, they are making strides in speed and animation smoothness. Longest I have had computer up is 11 years but Amiga system has such a vast amount of software titles and seeing upgrades 25 years later is a record nobody going to beat any time soon.
Still waiting for mine to the States. I feel like we are in New Zealand when ordering from Europe. About the 1 gb of ram, I had heard that wasn't system ram but was to be utilized by the arm processor and any further development on that. Anyone know?
My understanding is that it's used exclusively by the ZZ9000 card for display, Core A9 ARMs and Ethernet, etc.; not general-purpose for the Amiga. The 256MB BigRamPlus card from Individual Computers (link below) handles general RAM very nicely already. Only thing is that (at the time of writing) it appears to be out of stock: icomp.de/shop-icomp/en/shop/product/bigramplus.html

Great video Ravi, many thanks! I'd like to ask you about the performance of this card: How do you feel Workbench using these RTG modes in your experience? I happen to own one too (from batch 2), but I do feel that Workbench performance, when using 16bit or 32bit video modes at very high resolutions (1920x1080@16 bit / 1280x720@16bit / 32bit colour), is somewhat slow... As a super scientific test (LOL) I use EaglePlayer (which is a processor hog) with various plugins and see how good / bad it is at the specific resolution being tested, by watching the plugins play a MOD and seeing if the visualization is near or real-time. I discovered that 1920x1080 works perfect at 8bit color depth, and Workbench performance is pretty good. Also Ethernet was nearly unusable for me when tried the stable firmware and drivers, but when I moved to v1.4b (beta), all my networking issues disappeared. Maybe you could comment on this, or even better, make a new tech video ;-) Cheers! :-)
I have a ZZ9000 in Amiga 3000. I have installed the latest 1.5.1 firmware and I can see the zz9000 HD toolbox in the WB. I have a USB stick in the ZZ9000. What do I need to do to make the USB stick to work as a HD?
Do games still run at 4:3 even when using a 16:9 monitor? that demo looked like it was stretched to 16:9 (if it's stretches everything I don't see the point in replacing my CV64/3D). Also is the ethernet working yet? you didn't mention it really.

It is an OCS chipdemo, what else do you expect from 1998 ? It just shows the capabilities of the scandoubler of the ZZ9000. Are you referring to Warp3D ?
You don't just need an engine, you'd also need lots of games making use of it. Otherwise high end Amigas just make no sense besides for heavily outdated applications. I know, because I have gone all the way back then, with PowerPC204e, Cybervision PPC and all the bells and whistles - and it never paid off, besides about 5 games. Actually the only important thing it enabled the Amiga to do, was playing video or mp3 and multitasking fluently with the rest of the system. Of course the Workbench was better to use and some graphics tools. But who does really want to use those nowadays? That's why I only have an mere Amiga 600 now, because it takes little room and can run all the important Amiga games without the need for crappy emulation. It's clearly the software (like 3D games and a decent web browser), where the Amiga needs love.. but maybe there's a bit more hope with those new hardware parts around.
@@elmariachi5133 Agreed, without new and up to date software like games and production, the amiga is a heavy paper weight. A new OS is good as it is a step in the right direction, but without new software it is useless. New graphics engines would also be a good step in the right direction. But the amiga needs both.
I really love the Amiga (500, A3000) but i can't justify the cost of new hardware and OS, when all the Programs are still 10+ yrs old. Without new software The Amiga is a expensive paperweight. Also AGA was obsolete 10 Yrs ago

Those are much more pleasing than a Casio digital watch ( although those are cool too in their own way) Vynal record albulms, also a much different experience than listening to mp3 files, or watching RUclips videos of music - i wouldn't want to give up any of those experiences And the 8 bit computers ( my first computer was a Vic 20 when it came out, so there is a bit of old man nostalgia there making one line mazes in basic ECT) But the things i see people doing on Vic 20, C=64 now is amazing, especially c=64 demos Here in Nashville area where i live, know a LOT of working musicians, not many of them would get rid of a 56 telecaster because it only has one pickup. Or ever give up a prophet organ or any other piece of gear they play with or even just collect for many reasons Am not much of a gamer myself, i do other things with my Amigas and 8 bit machines And yes a lot of what i do with ( or am trying to do) with my Vic 20 would be easier and cheaper on an aurdino , but for some weird reason, it just seems more fun to hook up relays to the Vic 20 user port that spin old motors pulled from pc disc drives that move ping pong balls around. No reason to do that, but it's fun No reason to restore old cars or motorbikes , newer ones are technically better and more reliable And lastly and Mabry more importantly, Amigas are not apple,Microsoft, Google, Amazon ( and yes i use all those things also) Amiga is a community , not a huge corporation and i like these people much more than i do bill gates, elon musk, Berkshire Hathaway, Donald trump/ Hillary Clinton , and all the mega corporations that are only in it for the money Money is ok, but it's not everything

What a great piece of hardware love the Amiga community
Still waiting for mine to the States. I feel like we are in New Zealand when ordering from Europe. About the 1 gb of ram, I had heard that wasn't system ram but was to be utilized by the arm processor and any further development on that. Anyone know?
My understanding is that it's used exclusively by the ZZ9000 card for display, Core A9 ARMs and Ethernet, etc.; not general-purpose for the Amiga. The 256MB BigRamPlus card from Individual Computers (link below) handles general RAM very nicely already. Only thing is that (at the time of writing) it appears to be out of stock:

Just got my zz9000 in the mail ! Partially based upon your video I purchased it. Can't decide if it is going to live in one of my A2000s or my A4000 ( which has a video toaster 4000 in it)
Can't you just put it in a higher slot?
Nice to see the card up and running finally. I will be great once you can use it to it's full potential 👍
Yeh it was a long road but we got there in the end
Ordering one now! I have a bunch of A4000's and each one has something video card related or another! I even have a Petsoff DBLScan card in one of them. This new card appears to be pretty dam good :)
Oh, golly, that looks like it would be fantastic in my A4000T!!!
Obviously too early to ask, but what would the speed comparison be between the ZZ9000 to the Cybervison 64 be.
Depends on the CPU. if you are running an a4000 stock, i bet not a whole lot of difference, however if you are running accelerated, then it probably out performs the CV64
With A3000/060 I didnt notice much difference. In Quake maybe 15% faster.
Hey Ravi, when will you make a followup video?
I shall be doing one soon just need to fix a cap on my motherboard
It's nice to see new hardware. Shame not all features working yet.
should have sent it to dan - also that insulating material as you call it.. how do you think it works? its a static bag it keeps static OUTSIDE of the bag. replace that asap.
why would i send a card I brought to Dan?? Also it was turned inside out I have already mentioned this in comments that I will be replacing it with paper.
Wow workspeed and copy files looking very fast !
Can it run old games ? Possible old Outrun who has crappy fps on Amiga 500 and co. now run smooth with your system ? ;)
Most Amiga games are hard coded to use the Amiga chipset, so you would not see any upgrade with a graphics accelerator.
I've an Amiga 1200. I've recently discovered your channel and love it! (this and 8 bit guy).. What is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear you speak? Peep show!
Thanks for sharing... this looks cool!
but why you set 1024 in colors in screensmode and not 16 milions?
I have a ZZ9000 in Amiga 3000. I have installed the latest 1.5.1 firmware and I can see the zz9000 HD toolbox in the WB. I have a USB stick in the ZZ9000. What do I need to do to make the USB stick to work as a HD?
I have been trying to install the USB HD but there is a problem in rebooting. I have to turn power off and the installation wont continue after that.
That bag is not an insulator but a conductor...
nope it was turned inside out read pinned comment
the glitches are a long existing problem; if they can't fix it untill they ship out also my pre-ordered, I will cancel the order.
btw had contact, promissed mwe, will be fixed.
Great! I will be happy to receive the card :D
Do games still run at 4:3 even when using a 16:9 monitor? that demo looked like it was stretched to 16:9 (if it's stretches everything I don't see the point in replacing my CV64/3D). Also is the ethernet working yet? you didn't mention it really.
yes games run at 4:3 it all depends on the screen mode you select, there is not a stretch. I did mention the Ethernet but will be testing it on a later video
Cool.... do you think it's worth replacing my X-Surf and CV64/3D (with SD) for one of these? I really like the idea of HDMI out to put an end to needing 50 monitors on my desk.
@@Harp00nX I have never tried a cybervision from what they hear they are lovely. Yeh hdmi is nice, haha i know the feeling with so many monitors. I will report back on how the Ethernet works, my compact flash reader broke so waiting for a new one from amazon
Using a metallic bag as an insulator is pretty pointless.

@@Djformula Yes, but clearly you can see it's not turned inside out, its got nice clear sharp edges.
Can I use this on my Tower A1200 with the Zorro II expansion?
I would think so
sounds awesome. how will usb work?
Its not been activated yet
Is it possible to rout the middle section over to the video port on an A2000?
Nope it was turned inside out read pinned comment
@@Djformula huh?
Yes, MNT sells the same card with a 55cm cable for A2000 and Lukas has said that he will sell the 55cm cables separately at the same store "later"
Is USB working yet?
antistatic bags are conductive!!!. never use them like shown here. this is not a proper thing to do. whats shown here is absolıtely wrong.

Can it mine eth?
Well it's got an ARM chip and an FPGA, so the answer is yes.
Can it run Crysis?
And you are so serious ashole :D
That comment is getting tiresome
What is the price on this board?
At the time of writing, 329 Euros:

Pre-order price for Batch 2 is 329€
@@Cobrian Not bad at all really.
As a long time amiga user i am happy that the amiga is finally getting some new HW, but we need a new 3d graphics engine to bring it up to date. Sorry but the demo in this video, looks very retro.
It would be cool to see a modernized Amiga with MorphOS or something.
god I want an amiga now.
2023 I still hear the Ethernet & USB is crap
Looks nice
Thank you, makes me want to dig out my A-4000/040. 👍
Did it give your A2000 AGA capabilities?
I want to know this too
No, it cannot do that, it is impossible to make AGA chipset work on the Zorro bus.
How did an AGA demo run on the A2000?
Ahh! That explains everything. Watching the video, I got the impression he installed it on an A2000... My bad! 😅
Adrian Chiang The front of A2000 is brown, not beige like the A4000, quickest way to tell on a glance.
Holy shit. Do need.
I really love the Amiga (500, A3000) but i can't justify the cost of new hardware and OS, when all the Programs are still 10+ yrs old. Without new software The Amiga is a expensive paperweight. Also AGA was obsolete 10 Yrs ago
I just bought 2 games that came out this year for the Amiga, I can't keep up! :-)
@@daishi5571 OK let me clarify,I haven't seen or heard of any new games or productivity software in 10+ years. It's stating to feel more like a console then a computer. But i am inspired my the new hardware.
@@Linrox I was being facetious, but I do find it it puts a smile on my face everytime I see yet another new/retro game coming to the Amiga. If you take a look on indieretronews there is an Amiga section, and listed are new beat em ups, racing, strategy, arcade games coming. It's like no one told them that the Amiga has been out of production for a couple of decades!
that bag is conductive
yes - be very careful. I killed 286 motherboards as a kid running them on those types of bags..
@@jrherita Nope it was turned inside out read pinned comment
fpga again? why do you need old Amiga if you use fpga = run FULL Amiga inside of this FPGA together with virtual cpu, aga and other stuff
To be fair the FPGA seems like a little additional slapped on the board. They have not got it to do anything yet. The main board is a graphics board just like the Picasso cards
@@Djformula heh, you know it's not true, btw there are 2 arm cpus doing soft emulation, which is shame... just take raspberry pi 4 istead and emulate all Amiga hardware (this would not seem as crazy as this card)
Dude... its "Ethernet"... not "Effernet"...lol
Mind you it is SoLder not Sodder but that does not stop every American sounding weird. Each to their own 'dude'
Or Eithernet as everyone incorrectly pronounces it.
Who is this for?
If you would be so kind as to send me an A4000 I guess I could find a use for it! ;-)
Amiga. Didn't that thing die like 40 years ago?
Yeah was asking me the same question
Every time someone makes the Amiga is dead tech sorta comment, i think immediately of how about 100 years ago ( and even before that) many people ( including other artists) were of the opinion that painting was a dead art form ( for an example watch the movie Frida, where Diego Rivera tells Frida Kahlo that easel painting is dead )
I own several mechanical wind up watches and clocks . Those are much more pleasing than a Casio digital watch ( although those are cool too in their own way)
Vynal record albulms, also a much different experience than listening to mp3 files, or watching RUclips videos of music - i wouldn't want to give up any of those experiences
And the 8 bit computers ( my first computer was a Vic 20 when it came out, so there is a bit of old man nostalgia there making one line mazes in basic ECT)
But the things i see people doing on Vic 20, C=64 now is amazing, especially c=64 demos
Here in Nashville area where i live, know a LOT of working musicians, not many of them would get rid of a 56 telecaster because it only has one pickup. Or ever give up a prophet organ or any other piece of gear they play with or even just collect for many reasons
Am not much of a gamer myself, i do other things with my Amigas and 8 bit machines
And yes a lot of what i do with ( or am trying to do) with my Vic 20 would be easier and cheaper on an aurdino , but for some weird reason, it just seems more fun to hook up relays to the Vic 20 user port that spin old motors pulled from pc disc drives that move ping pong balls around. No reason to do that, but it's fun
No reason to restore old cars or motorbikes , newer ones are technically better and more reliable
And lastly and Mabry more importantly,
Amigas are not apple,Microsoft, Google, Amazon ( and yes i use all those things also)
Amiga is a community , not a huge corporation and i like these people much more than i do bill gates, elon musk, Berkshire Hathaway, Donald trump/ Hillary Clinton , and all the mega corporations that are only in it for the money
Money is ok, but it's not everything
You can play Fortnite with that? :D
Anything "9000" is a win in my book.
