There are HDMI mods for old consoles that go up to 1080p as well, even going as far back as the NES.

@ungratefulmetalpansy Even as an Atarian, I have to admit the Commodore 128D came with a great case. But by that point, it should've been the Commodore 256 or 512.
Not to mention crappy advertising...
Have look to RCA, McDonell Douglas, now Boeing, GE ... the list goes on. Its is easy to loose control when you get big and high profile, the cost reduction culture kicks in and d1ck heads start to manage the company (Boeing is the perfect example), losing their real focus. I still think CBM redem themselves with their latest products, but it was too late. Hovewer they were about to survive their crisis with the CDTV sales, but they couldnt even afford payments to their suppliers and they ended producing like half of the units demanded. If they managed to produce CDTV at their figures, on Christmas, probably will be with us today. Issue is when companies like that lose their original Leader / Manager and start being controllers by accountants, lawyers or marketing people. RIP.
They were just satisfied with sales of the old models and never developed anything that could keep Amiga ahead of the competition. Amiga needed more processing power, more RAM and new graphics chip that would be compatible with old ones and could manage 3D stuff. AGA chip was barely an improvement over ECS. More colors and higher resolutions but it was weak at 3D graphics. Even polygon graphics were running slow on an A1200 and people wanted fast simulators and FPS shooters.
I know right?! The words “ran” and “into the ground” come to mind 😂
The A500 was a perfect machine for a teenager who wanted to make music and learn 68k assembly. :) I miss those days.
Most people forget how powerful the Amiga was back when it was released. There was literally a PC emulator for the Amiga, as in you could run PC MS-DOS software on the Amiga using a software emulator and it actually ran pretty well compared to common x86 machines at the time.
Not to mention the generous upgrade path they had. It was a great platform for enthusiasts of computing in general. It's no wonder the community is still pushing it further.
@@SyphistPrime yeah, it's a shame how Commodore was mismanaged so badly when they had so many fans all over the world, I remember reluctantly switching to the PC platform after it was evident the Amiga wasn't getting a successor and Commodore was pretty much dead. Still loving my Amiga and Commodore since my first Vic-20, but PC was the only path forward.
PC emulation was horrifically slow on the original Amiga. Transformer emulated a PC running at 300Khz IIRC. You may be thinking of Macintosh emulation - which due it having the same CPU, was actually faster for certain applications than native hardware.
@@lister_of_smeg6545 You are probably right and I might have a slightly rose tinted view of the Amiga, never did a benchmark comparison, just running some various accounting software on both platforms back in the day and I was impressed, but still considering everyone use their PCs to emulate other platforms these days it's worth remembering the Amiga was emulating the PC long before the PC could emulate the Amiga. It shows how badly Commodore failed to evolve compared to everyone around them.

This bought back memories. My first home computer was an Amiga 600. It was a dream machine. The hours I poured into it! Never had Internet. But was happy to have a printer and be able to do cool stuff for school on a word processor. Then games of course.
Love how FPGA and the Open Hardware community keeps the Amiga platform alive.

@crazy waters Sure, but what's the point? You basically end up running modern software on modern hardware that way. You can just use a peecee for that.
I'm an old Atari ST user and I think these videos are great. The Amigas were fantastic machines.
The Amiga is the birthplace of Lemmings, and true classic for amiga owners and a great puzzle game worth revisiting time and time again.
The eye watering cost of amiga hardware made me pick up a cheap stereo microscope and learn how to do surface mount soldering. My first projects were a GBA PII++ RTG card for my 2000 and a scan doubler.
I love these videos... I came here for the emulators and hacking but stayed for the hardware and coding..

I still have an Amiga 500 and a 600 :) My first two computers I got from my father as I was turning 4 years old in 1992.

Sold my 1200 + 68030 accelerator and gave my 600 motherboard away. Was waiting for a standalone vampire fpga. Decided on the mister fpga instead. Definitely worth it even if it's a downgrade cpu wise at the moment.
We grew up having C64's but my half bro had an Amiga 500 and I just remember it had all the best games on it. I remember always wanting to play it.
This is the most impressive thing I've seen in a while. It looks like a late 1990s era computer, but because of the high resolution, so modern! I can't explain how crazy it feels to look at it like that. Being able to play 15kHz games like that is a major feat too!

My dad loved commodore, his first computer was a Commodore plus 4. Growing up, I remember playing games on my on his Amiga 2000. After he passed, I found his commodore plus4 and Amiga 2000 in his closet. I took them for sentimental value, but I have no clue how they work, as I'm used to more modern PCs.
You'll have to take up learning the Plus/4 and Amiga 2000 for your Dad's sake.
I think you should call is the "Zed-Z 9000". Mash both pronunciations together, plus it has a nice ring ;)

Although this topic is not my area of interest, I still found it interesting that there is still so much active development on old Amiga hardware.
The fact that you can still purchase upgrades for the Amiga is a very beautiful thing indeed.
This is so cool how people love old but tried-and-true tech like the Amiga so much to BUILD HARDWARE for it! That's beautiful. Even though the system may have failed somewhat in its hay-day, it's having its moment now instead! I still want one of these computers some day.
I just wish that there were an Amiga 1200 clone that doesn't cost an arm and a leg: seriously, even the cheapest replicas cost well over 300 Euros, which is absolutely insane.
Never been a big fan of the games on the system, but buying the A2000 in '87 got me into digital painting and 3D rendering. My last Amiga was an accelerated A4000 with a Video Toaster/Flyer combo.
I’d like to say that yes, for most people, 1080p hd resolutions on Amiga were only available on emulators. But I’ve used my Voodoo 3 card in my Mediator on my A1200 that was towerised in 1998, since 2000. If I had a better monitor back then, I could have ran 1920x1080 already back then, but had to settle with 1360x1200 or something like that, can’t remember exactly... and I also had the Spider USB card, as well as ethernet, sound card and a tv card in it, but yet again, for most people, emulation was the only way
Or you could have just had a PC where that sort of thing was already completely normal.
Can't imagine the point of having a Voodoo 3 card on an Amiga. Was there any software for it?

Awesome. Back in the late 80's Amiga owners were shelling out up to $2000 for advanced graphics cards. These are a fantastic value. Still have my Amiga 2000 from 1989.

The Amiga's chips were designed by Jay Miner, who also designed the chips in the Atari 8-bit series of computers. They have similar ways of working.

I mean, yes, it could be argued that since ANTIC can't write back to memory it's not a true co-processor, but it does have a instruction list that can be programmed in the display list. In this way it's a more primitive ancestor to the copper in the Amigas Agnus and Alice chips in OCS/ECS and AGA.
@@Great-Documentaries you really don't know what you're talking about. The Atari 8-bit line that Jay Miner and company designed had co-processors. The ANTIC and the CTIA/GTIA being chief examples of them. In 1978/1979. The SID came out in 1982; the Atari POKEY in 1979. If you want to tout Commodore's expertise, why can a 1979 computer hold its own against a 1982 computer? And why did Commodore botch their serial port communications system in the C64 that they copied from Atari's SIO port, the forerunner of USB? [designed by Joe Decuir again in 1979 and released in 1979 with the Atari 400 and 800]. If you want to talk about custom chips in the 16-bit era, Atari Corp had the SHIFTER, GLUE, and their own Blitters for the ST series. Jay Miner and Joe Decuir both designed the Amiga's later tech. Enjoy your Commodes.
I do not get why he included a circuit to convert line drawings to filled vectors instead of -- you know -- just filling vectors directly. Bresenham is not that expensive and he could have planned to up the clock in later Amigas. Synergy with the disk drive is not really a reason. I mean this conversion is done by a singel flip flop -- something which could be included in some IC needed for the disk anyway.
This is a 16-bit computer with shared memory and he forget a 16-bit per pixel video mode. The 16-bit CPU has special circuitry to wirte individual bytes and he forget an 8-bit per pixel video mode. (chunked or how you call it)
The Amiga uses flat addressing scheme for video memory (no text mode), so could easily sport a unified approach drawing sprites front to back. But he missed that chance. For blitting the sprite circuitry output could be redirected to memory: Use VBI+frame+VBI to render small sprites to framebuffer, use next frame to combine framebuffer with large foreground sprites. Just because you know most Amiga games ran at 30 fps.
I like that sprites can be repeated like on Atari 2600 "Space Invaders". Now they are used for the background pattern. Most C64 games with their textmode also just repeated the background.
@@Great-Documentaries The way Antic builds up a display by reading the parameters from its display list is conceptually almost the same as how Agnus would construct a display from its instruction stream stored in its copperlist. The term "co-processor" is ultimately meaningless here. Everything which helps the CPU to do things faster than by its own could be considered a co-processor. ;-)

PC graphics cards with accelerator chips started to appear on the market before the first Amiga did. You're just making shit up.
I have been playing my old Amiga games and demos on a MiSTer FPGA. It has a built in HDMI port and all the scan modes are converted to your target output mode. It is the best option for playing all your old games in a cycle accurate FPGA Amiga recreation that is compatible with modern displays. If it is the productivity app you want to run then a Raspberry Pi 4 will smash any real hardware without ridiculously expensive modern boards. I was the champion of Amiga fan boys back in the day and ran one for years after their demise but I really don't see much point in spending money to upgrade one these days.

I never had an amiga nor I didnt know what it was except for a couple of years ago (im 42). I did live in the late 80's with my 386DX/486SLC 50Mhz and you make me want to buy one with this graphic card.

Awesome video and hello from AU! no doubt will meet you again at AUG someday. Bought 3 of these one for A3000, A4000 and A2500. Display is crystal clear in all modes on new Dell 27'" monitors and at 1080p the text and icons are miniscule so I tend to use 1280x720 as the sweet spot once you have one it's hard to go back when you don't own any crt monitors.
I REALLY appreciate those magical cards that peeps have put 2gether. Absolutely fantastic! Namasté.

FPGAs are the holy grail of retro computing. Not only do you not need to design and fabricate a chip in the traditional way, but the hardware itself can be patched and upgraded via firmware.
Imagine what will happen if we can get to the point of running FPGAs at frequencies like a GHz. We could see what power a continuation of these systems would've been.

Exactly.... And things are moving forward. People hate the software and hardware issues on mac, and they are tired of MS fucking up Win10 all the time. People hate all that data logging as well. And people are not that keen on learning Linux. I see a future for the Amiga.... Maby not in the form we old farts know it. Yet as a platform it will live on. Perhaps as MorphOS on x86?

the Amiga dies as the owners literally die off or get bored, the hardware is rare these days. at least in an affordable purchasing form (US anyway).
the oldest A500s are thirty five years old, the heyday mass market machines almost thirty circa 2021.
I spent an easy thousand UK pounds on a A1200 machine and upgrades in the early mid 90s. then powerful PCs became cheapish.

The Amiga, I never got to touch it. But I heard it was a great PC, and that was it. But when I heard it can multitask and play the heaviest games on the market, it blew my socks off. Even now, I still think it was bizzare. *Thanks for the trip back to the past.*

Oh man. I miss the amiga. I have an old 500 and 2000. My father and I used to screw around with the video toaster off of his puters. Oh man, shadow of the beast. I wish I would of learned what my father was trying to teach me back then. We'de solder connections on the mother bored to reroute things, something to do with fatter angnus ?(i remebered none of the terminology or even what we where doing.) Sex drugs and rock n roll was what I wanted. Damn did I choose wrong. He'd get pissed at me, said I was missing my calling. Took 30 yrs to get 'it'

I bought one of these. Still have not pulled out the A4000 and installed. I got tired of trying to find a scan doubler for the 4000 and splurged. The benefit of the scan doubler PLUS the additional features on the card made it a must have for me.
Yeah me too, the x-surf network card failed me (again), so this is the best new zorro card since many years ..
As an Amiga fan and an owner of a1200, I'd love to own a big box Amiga. However I find there is so little information out on upgrade paths for the big boxes. Love to see more videos.

I've been thinking about it for a while. Old hardware that's upgradable to this extent is super appealing to me. It's insane that people are still pushing these computers to the limits despite being 3 decades old at this point.

That Zynq chip isn't just an FPGA, it's an SoC with an FPGA on die. That one chip is several orders of magnitude faster than the Amiga... I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw that going into an Amiga.
Nice review. I pre-ordered one of these. Waited over a year(didn't mind waiting) and when it finally shipped I was pretty excited. Took over 3 weeks to get to the states and in the process the address did not translate over properly from the shipper to USPS. They mixed the suite number with the street number. So off it went back to Germany. I ended up just getting a refund. I might give it another go. I sure would like to support Lukas's work.

It is, though at this point you're essentially attaching an Amiga to an ARM / FPGA accelerator card, rather than the other way round.
I pulled the trigger and bought 2 ZZ9000's and companion Sound Cards. I have an AA3000+ board being built to go in a Checkmate 1500 black case with Simon's sheetmetal fitting kit, then an A4000TX going into a Fractal Define XL for that big box Amiga experience. OS 3.2 on CF via IDE, and waiting on the ReA4091 SCSI Zorro cards to become avaliable. Either BFG9060 or upcoming Vampire accelerators will go in them. Not sure at this point. Exciting times and its amazing new boards can be built.

I also remember in 1995 my Amiga 500 with 1 mb of ram and a nice 286 cpu card alongside with her 68000 cpu. I was able to run dos and AmigaOS too. If I had an hdd, it would be possible to run Dos 6 or Win 3.1. Great computer and hours of engoyment with friends playing sensible soccer!
Amiga 500 is the computer I'm most fond of, I had C64 and a Vic-20 before it and many computers after till this day, but the Amiga I was at that age where gaming is at it's best and games were just sweet on Amiga, plus it had a very active social side to it which other computers of the day didn't seem to have.
Oh man having Amiga 4000/40 would have been my dream come true when I was a kid, Wing Commander would have been so smooth lol
Same. Amiga 4000T was (and still is) my absolute dream machine, but of course I could never afford it, and my parents of course wouldn't buy me one (understandable). That thing was expensive as heck, and in hindsight it would have been an awful investment.
Maybe if I win the lottery one day (better start playing) I can afford one, lol.
@@wohlhabendermanager If you would have bought such a machine back in the day and kept it clean and looked after, you could probably get almost twice the price back now if you would sell it. Real Amiga hardware is actually more expensive now than what it was back in the 90:s.
@@TemalCageman Doubling the investment in 28 years (1994 until now) still sounds like an awful investment. ;)
Plus, if I could have afforded to buy a 4000, I of course wouldn't have kept it clean and boxed. I would have used it.
And yes, of course real Amiga hardware is more expensive now, because there is a limited supply.
@@wohlhabendermanager Yeah.... :) Knowing the future is always hard... that said... I should never have exchanged my super-expanded Amiga 1200T that I had back in 2004 for a Pegasos 1. That is one of my biggest regrets in life... It was the machine that helped me get to where I am today in computer games industry. It was quite a stable machine despite all the expansions it had.
Oh well... I'm quite happy with my AOne X5000, v4 standalone and Sam 460... but I really would like to have a proper real Amiga today as well.

Cool. We always called the "board with slot connectors" in the A3000/A4000 a "riser" board, not a "daughter" board. Makes it a bit more unique. Nice that the video slot piece allows A2000 use, too.

Would be wild if people started making ARM executables, since we're already seeing this on jpeg, mp3 decoding. Much in the way of WarpOS/Warpup.
