I once drove around the corner to see a truck dumping in the park and I quickly realized what was happening. It didn’t take long to be a full fire once it was out.

B4 i became a Firefighter i work for waste management in Phoenix AZ we was train to when you first see smoke dump out as soon as possible even if you are on the Interstate. Pull over and dump it quickly
I don't get why the trucks are equiped with a fire suppression system that strays foam inside the truck. I'm the fire is contained inside the truck kick the air off this putting out the fire.
As a 1st responder EMS in NY. It’s soooo annoying when you “buffs” get in our way of the actual emergency. You’re probably the only one that actually displays common sense and gets out of the way, so that we can get to work. I thank you for that. Nice clip.
As a fire fighter I can say thank you to the people who try to help and point to where the fire is however it’s not necessary 99.9% of the time we no exactly where we’re going especially when smoke is seen miles away
As mentioned by other readers the load should have been dumped. The problem here is the driver waited too long to dump. With all the garbage truck fires I ever fought the best results were with a dumped load. You can see the issue is hydraulic since as the hopper section started to rise it goes up a little and then falls as the system fails After members cut in they still could not pull anything out because a modern garbage truck can pack 1000 lbs. or more into one cubic yard of space. This truck normally dumps with an front mounted ejector plate that pushes the load out the back. The driver attempted to push the load out of the hole the members cut but the truck could not build pressure due to failed hydraulics. Fortunately this truck is repairable. A new truck like this is a 300 to 400 k investment. So if any garbage route drivers are watching dump as quickly as you can once you determine there’s a fire in the body. I have seen these go until the entire truck is destroyed.
The problem I see was they opened the rear of the truck a full two minutes before the lines were even charged with water. This allowed air in and the fire to breath, then it burnt through a hydraulic line. If they had waited till the water was good to go this most likely would never have happened.
The training the driver should have had teaches them the procedure is pack it... pack it... pack it... Get to the closest clear area then immediately eject the load call for fire department while packing the load. The packing reduces the air in the load causing it to smolder instead of burn allowing more time to get to a safe spot to eject and upon starting ejecting eject as fast as the truck can and get the truck clear.
They should have just called a heavy wrecker to lift the back up so they could access it. What I think happened, was when they started to open it, the hydraulic hose melted from the heat of the fire.
Good video. FDNY knows their stuff. Dispatch redirects units to a different response as acting when the normal units are busy on other calls. Sure enough in the case of this fire, the acting units had to respond.
Our garbage haulers dump first then call the F.D., makes a mess but saves the truck. Last incident was a Waste Management truck, one huge mess but the WM crew did an awesome job on the clean up.
You are such a wonderful man to bring us all these events! I have never seen anything like this before and I am grateful. It’s such a pretty truck....Be careful in this heat, John. ❤️
Long time ago I worked on that type of truck in a shop. The hydraulic lines on the side were probably destroyed with the fire shooting out. Which prevented lifting the rear.
I have the utmost respect for firefighters be they full time paid or part time volunteers and rarely critizise what they do but I can't help thinking that this was a very expensive cock up from start to finish. The hydraulics were probably burnt out by the flames on them while the back was open all that time while they got the water sorted. Surely with so little sign of fire apart from the wisp of smoke after they had got the water on the fire and the back had closed back up they could have got the rubbish truck to somewhere more open and brought in a big digger or shovel or forklift and lifted the back up as I've seen fire departments do in other videos on RUclips and empty it that way. That would have surely been a much cheaper alternative to cutting the whole thing open in the sides. I noticed, unusually for FDNY, there were no senior officers in attendance. Maybe if there had been the whole episode would have been dealt with differently. And I am in England and our firefighters do things differently to your guys as well!
The drivers are trained if the load catches fire the are to ram it all the way to the back to pack it tight to choke the fire and go to the dump. The dumps have an area to push the load out on so it can be spread out so it can be extinguished. They need a heavy tow truck to lift the back up so they can pull the recycling out
Maji, the same thing just happened in MN. But that was a semi truck of scrap metal, burning. I said dump the load out. First fire truck pulled up, fire kept burning, second truck, they get a line over a fence, and eventually the driver and the FD figured out, dump it. But the video shows a State trooper hurrying to get in his car, and somehow, someway, some goes around the sign truck and another vehicle blocking the road. You would think, nobody could, it'd be impossible, but how in the H_ll do people not see all the cars stopped, the vehicles with flashing lights, a sign truck, and yet, someone always gets around them? The S.P. said you may want to get behind them before he starts writing tckets and confiscates the mans DL.
It would have been better to call the fleet wrecker to the scene to lift the tail gate with the boom of the wrecker.
