  • In November 2023, I presented a two hour walking tour of London's lapidary history as part of the Gem-A Conference. I recorded the audio from the event and then recreated the experience through videos and photos. Enjoy the virtual walk.

I’d love to know more about Holts. Sadly when I was doing my research on the British cutting history, I tried to contact them over and over and they just didn’t care to talk about their own story or their role in the greater British lapidary world. I hope you’re course was fun!

@JustinKPrim I don't know too much about them but spoke to both the father and son. The course was down in the basement, an introduction to lapidary and carving
I at that age of 18 had been cutting since I was 16 on a Raytech Shaw. I was hoping to get an apprenticeship and become professional, but they were not interested on one hand I would hear that this industry can not find people but when I tried it didn't get me anywhere
The course was nice and very interesting for me but not faceting in a separate room they had a couple of faceting machines and I assumed that the actual work was upstairs above the shop
I know that Holts worked on the 11 million pound restoration of the Albert memorial
I'm still just an occasional hobbyists
But would love to cut professionally
Every thing about gemstones and lapidary is very important to me so I really appreciate all that you do Justin

Rubies and Emeralds come from North Carolina. This may be why Hyram went to live there.

I’m surprised that foot cranks or potters wheel motion didn’t become normal for gem cutting ??
