Thanks again for having me. It was really cool to go "behind the scenes" of your workshop that I've seen in your videos and also to be able to come with my machine and play for a bit. Maybe next time we can go out and do some rockhounding together!
It was great working on this video together and thank you so much for taking the time to come by and teach me about the world of faceting! I look forward to the next time our paths cross.
Justin's channel is awesome!!! I discovered his work whilst doing a deep dive on the history of lapidary arts and have been hooked ever since!!!! Cool seeing 2 of my favourite RUclips channels hanging out 🤘🤩🤘
That was a fabulous video. I first heard the name of Justin K Prim from lapidary dave, one night on his live, and i turned that name over to Karen who had just bought her faceting machine, but um not sure if she ever made use of it or not. Ive been watching his viog videos as he has been traveling, and i enjoy them. Ive seen your name come up in the comment section and was very surprised, as i could not see you getting into faceting. But the side of you that thirsts for knowledge, of all kinds, i could see it. And i knew through Justin's vlogs that that he was going to visit you, and that just blew my mind! Im glad! I think he and his faceting classes that he teaches, are a wonderful, and extremely doable thing for anybody that wants to get into faceting. So thank you for this video. I am like you, i have a desire to learn but not necessarily do. The whole world of gemology is fascinating, but as pretty as gems are, its the minerology that i like. And the collecting of the rough. But just having the knowledge of the trade is good. Awesome video. I like Justin. His easy demeanor and way of speaking isnt intimidating and is cohesive to the learning environment.
I really don't think I will be getting into faceting anytime soon since I really can't take anything else on to my plate but I do really love the idea of it and learning about these different aspect of the lapidary world. His channel is great.
Researching the entire history of stone cutting lead me to Justin's posts on Medium and then his yt channel. He is the premier historian with not only a massive written archive, but also a museum filled with faceting machines and more yet to be displayed. This is his calling and his passion! If you think of a faceting diagram as "paint-by-numbers" it takes the intimidation factor down significantly. When you spoke of cabs, look at it like faceting in one critical respect; color is everything. That is the number one factor in value and desirability. Your experience with making lapidary gear can save a ton of money, especially if you go used or make your own machine. Peripherals (correct dopsticks, transfer block etc.) may not be available, so learning to make those with simple tools is a skill worth building. I could ramble more but the journey into faceting is one centered around patience, and now that you've been bitten by the bug I expect you'll be looking into buying a machine and reading/viewing a ton of content. You will absolutely wish you'd started faceting earlier in life once you start, as we all find out once immersed in the craft. The kit Justin offers is probably the best equipped and most affordable professional setup available. Great mashup video!
Getting to know Justin some has been great for and I have learned a lot in the process. Perhaps someday I will try my hand at faceting but for the time being I'm happy with the machines I have! :)
To make real money selling cabs, you gotta finish like 3+ an hour. That's part of why faceted stones cost so much more. Even an experienced cutter like Justin takes a couple hours for (I'm guessing) something like an 8 mm stone. Excellent, informative interview!
Finally two of my most favorite and most watched RUclipsr's together. Would have never expected it but awesome to see it. JKP is one of the most underrated gem faceting experts out there IMO. His approach is both fundamental yet highly advanced and he teaches it in a manner that is absorbable by anyone wanting to get into the profession. As for Currently Rockhounding well what can I say, he is the Sh$t! I can and have spent many hours watching and learning from the man. The top of the top on RUclips to say the very least. Keep the awesome content coming brother!
Fantastic! This setup appeals to me so much more than a 8k system and really seems to put this aspect of rockhounding back within reach of the hobby... Justin has a new subscriber and I'll be diving down that rabbit hole shortly. :)
Thanks for the quick dive into faceting. I learned in class, my wife and I took, it was much more fulfilling to send the stones to someone you know that facets, than doing it yourself. It is way too boring for us. He seems like a good teacher and has a better technique than most. Thanks for sharing. Be happy, safe and stay healthy. 😷⚒
@27:14 IMO this is the most important lesson anyone getting into lapidary should know. This is why I struggle with the prices of the name-brand lapidary companies; For hobbyists the price is a massive barrier to entry and for businesses there are superior options. We need more people like Jared and Justin that will provide the INFORMATION people need to enjoy the hobby and make brilliant art that will last for generations. I really appreciate this collab gentlemen.
I'm glad you liked it. I have high hope for the future as far as high-quality, low cost machines coming to the market with will help more people dip their toes in the lapidary pool.
I'm sooooo excited to see tbis and listen. I've always loved gems..especially the non traditional one. I despise diamonds. But I've been absolutely terrified by how much patience and skill is needed and the price tag and all that stuff. This video here has absolutely convinced me that I can, actually, get into faceting. Brilliant video and I immediately subscribed to his channel. Thank you both for relieving me of the fear of facet work. I truly appreciate it.
I'm glad you liked it! Maybe next time Justin is traveling around the country teaching classes you could sign up if time allows for it. He supply's everything.
Does the world need more 30X40mm cabs? Ouch! As a master cabochon cutter for many, many years I'm not sure how to take a comment like that. Just like faceting, and Justin said it as well, It's the ability of the cutter that makes a difference. I've had a number of master faceters offer to teach me how. It's not something that interests me, so I politely turn them down. I enjoy cutting cabochons and will stick with what works for me. Also as Justin said, while doing it, you kind of go into a trance. Nice video for those who are interested. Interesting aspect, having a guest. Until the next one. Thanks again as usual.
I was mostly kidding, but we do see bins and bins of them at shows. It just seems be such a common thing that people almost give them away. The most important part is to enjoy what you do. I really enjoy showcasing things like this a learning in the process. My cabochons are completely amateur at best, I would love to sit down and document the process of making a cabochon with someone such as yourself who is a master at it.
Wow, Justin interviewed all these people I know when he was up here in Maine. I didn't see Jeff Morrison from Havey Quarry on camera in one of his videos, but I definitely knew that voice when they were getting a tour up there. Same with Brett L from the store up there. I just watched @JustinKPrim videos on his activities on the way through Maine. Cool.
This was a good one and weird coincidence. I'm gonna try to put a new garnet in a ring my mom has had since I was born. Garnet is my birth stone and her stone fell out a few years ago. I'm thinking with more experience now I might be able to make a polished one with a few facets nothin fancy. Thanks again Jared and thanks Justin for being a guest and teaching all that you do.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding I enjoy them all really. That agate I got wasn't all of it. Had to chisel it in half, was nearly dark no lights n a 15 min walk back to the truck. Also up on the slide area and 60 lbs of material. Only 5 lbs were dirt and undesirable. Might have been last real rock trip till spring, you know lol.

Most excellent interview! I might give that a try in the future! Subbed to Justin's channel!

I'm sure you're correct there about having to finish 3+ cabs an hour... That also sounds really un-enjoyable to me at at least.

Fantastic video Jared. A great insight into faceting. Thanks to Justin for sharing his knowledge too.

I would like to learn Faceting. I’m still trying to figure out what stones I’ve found

It was great to do a video with Justin and I look forward to next book he comes out with on the history of faceting in America.
Faceting is so much fun, I worked cut colored glass to learn at a rock club. It is a recipe for each cut (facet). That machine looks very nice.
Great idea you latest....!!
And I agree that Justin is a good teacher....!!
