      Thank you so much, Shell !! The intro and outro were more lively but I apologise for the actual review I did on 7 December. I had had a very busy day and being an OldieWonk, I ran out of steam and went into Drake's just to get somewhere to sit, have a decent bite and get restored ready to walk to the bus stop. I am glad I did go into Drake's since everything was superb, great flavours, perfect cooking, excellent service. I couldn't do a filming of the other tables since it was jam packed with tourists from the York Christmas Festival and the building is a series of very small rooms and it is very old indeed - built at least 200+ years ago .

      They are. The lady with the dogs apologised for walking in front of me. I had to do it on the other side of the street to make sure nobody nicked my camera !! It happens all the time, even when I am filming. When I was at the Folk Hall talking to the camera, a little old lady was in the queue for food at the cafe and she wasn't very tall, so her head was at the same height as the camera lens and so she was sure I had been talking to her !!! And of course, when I did the pizza review at the Gillygate pub, Kev on the neighbouring chair wanted to be in the video ! It is really quite funny.
      I thought I better do some more singing, Steve since you said you liked it, but I couldn't get the tempo right, but I have begun to wear earphones and play the tune in my lug-holes to keep to the song's tempo. Then when I edit, I can pair it up with the music which is on the bottom chiron graphic I did.

    Very good must say ur hair looks lovely noticed it was different a couple of videos ago, I got a little confused cuz I’m not the brightest spark In the box, did u go to drakes again just to tell us about the vid?? Cuz like u said the food review was from before? The food looked delicious I’ve never had a Yorkshire fish cake, the wer I come from are a little round thing and I’ve never like them ther just mashed up s?!t with parsley in them,, I wafferling on again ain’t sorry, great vid Nikki thanku

    • @NikkisNosh
      @NikkisNosh  14 дней назад +1

      Yes! Thank you Tony. Just before Christmas, I went to the hairdressers to take out all the grey roots and I mentioned my hair was too unruly and looked like candy floss on the screen. She suggested we take it a bit darker and I straighten it. It is a bit of hard work, but it DOES look better, but there are still a few videos I did before Christmas that I still have to edit.
      Drake's was one of them and I went there after a very busy day and was very weary. In fact, my daughter said I look positively ill in that video. When I got home, I went straight to bed if I recall. So when I said I was 'returning' to Drake's, I recorded the start and end on Thursday 16 Jan 2025. I did the review on 7 December but I was so tired that evening, it was too busy to do an outside intro and I didn't decide to do proper outside endings until this year when I asked Greeno why he and Gary did it, and so I decided to copy the Masters.
      That fish cake wasn't a Yorkshire fishcake though, it was a home-made mixed one all mashed up with parsley and a few other ingredients and was delicious. I DID have a Yorkshire fishcake when I went to Thompson's in this video ruclips.net/video/FurHi9RDZFw/видео.html . I have to say though that when I was a kid, my mum made those ones you describe and I hated them - practically all mashed spud and next to no fish but Drake's version was really delicious indeed.

      I enjoyed the entire meal, Sheila, but the 2 home-made things that stood out were the fishcake (full of flavour and not at all dry) and their tartare sauce. I mentioned it to one of the staff and they very kindly gave me a big tub of the sauce and I had it with some roast chicken breasts I cooked the next day - it was absolutely gorgeous!

    Nikki, I am so jealous of the good fish and chips and fish cakes you can find in restaurants. The majority of restaurants in my town are Mexican restaurants and fast foods. We have one seafood place but their food has a lot to be desired. I only drink my tea over ice. I make Earl Grey tea and pour it over ice. Excellent review. I shared the video out to my Facebook friends and public. Donna

    • @NikkisNosh

      Well, if you get back on your feet Donna, you could make a trip to the UK and we could give you a list of places to go to enjoy traditional British Fish n Chips and many other British delicacies. I think part of the problem is that the fish we use are very sturdy Icelandic/North Sea species that lend themselves to deep frying, whereas in the USA, your fish species used in cooking are more delicate due to them living in much warmer waters.
      I like the idea of you having your Earl Grey over ice. I might try it to see how the bergamot flavour is altered by the cold.
      I personally prefer the sister blend to Earl Grey called Lady Grey tea which is unique to Twinings which I think you can get in the USA via Amazon I bet - here is the UK link amzn.to/3DZcjt8 . It is best served hot with just water. The bergamot is replaced in practical terms by orange.
      Thank you for sharing my videos with your friends.

      @ it would be nice to visit the UK and experience all the good fish and chip places. I will need to get a passport along with getting over my fear of flying. I have flown from Killeen, Texas to Midland, Texas. On the return to Killeen we hit turbulence and I kept asking the flight attendant is that normal. When we landed in Killeen, I literally screamed because we landed with a little bump. The poor military guy sitting next to me asks if I was alright and I said yes now that we have landed. My boss was in the back and she told me when I screamed I caused several people to curse. Have not flown since 2008. It doesn’t help that I used to have dreams of plane crashes.
      My grandmother, Lura Beatrice Dark, family originally came from England. According to my DNA, my ancestral regions are England & Northwestern Europe; Scotland; Germanic Europe; Wales; Denmark and the Netherlands.
      I ordered some Lady Grey tea as it sounds delicious. It will be here on Monday. Of course I will taste it hot then add ice 🧊

    • @NikkisNosh
      @NikkisNosh  14 дней назад +2

      Tell me what you think of the Lady Grey tea but try it hot first before you add the ice hahaha. Apparently, you could get a transatlantic cruise to get from the USA to Britain with Cunard. It takes 7 days and costs from $888 per person (one way) so a heck of a lot of time and money just to get traditional British fish and chips. There are some trad English fish and chip shops in Texas amazingly including this one facebook.com/p/The-Chipper-100063586510186/

    • @DLBass-op2ib

      @ hopefully the tea will arrive on Monday but it is a holiday MLK day along with the Trump’s inauguration. I will try hot first before I put it in a glass of ice. I love the taste of orange in a tea. I used to buy organic jasmine green tea to brew. If I ever get my energy back I just might try to make my own fish and chips. I am sure I could get some cod and find a recipe for the batter. I still have that Larkin I want to make but everything is currently on the back burner. My daughter has a friend who lives in Katy, Texas. Not sure about crossing the sea in a ship. 🛳️✈️🚢

      @@NikkisNoshI tried the Lady Grey hot and it was good. It was even better over ice. You should try it over ice and see what you think. It would be good especially on a hot summer day. I really like the subtle flavors in the Lady Grey tea. I do not use sweetener in my tea. I may be from the south but I don’t like sweet tea. Donna

      Indeed they were, but we in York are spoiled when it comes to Fish & Chips, matched or possibly even exceeded by Whitby.
      There are only a few more great York chippies left to review unfortunately, and it will mean me having to travel a bit further afield to other parts of Yorkshire to find their equal or better. Come early summer, I will use by OAPs' bus pass and pack myself off to Whitby for the day, then do Scarboro (or what they now called Scarbella lol) the following week and Bridlington the week after.

    Wow Nikki that all looked fantastic. For a small portion it was more than adequate. And the fish cake also looked bangin. God bless you but you can put away some amount of grub😂. And the prices were spot on. I wish we had some of that kinda grub over here 😢. I love your channel Nikki even more than Gary and Greenos. Any chance you could do a collaboration with one of them?

      Thanks so much Philip! 😊 As I have said before, I have to eat everything I see since it is most likely my only meal that day. I went to a lovely restaurant on Thursday night (about to edit it for release on Sunday if I am lucky) and on Friday I popped to a place for a takeaway I have already been to (coming out nest week) but the portion was so big I DID split it in two and I had only half on Friday (nothing else that day) and I am about to have the second half for my only evening meal tonight, Saturday.
      So, I AM trying to keep my calorie count down when not in front of the camera but food is my only indulgence - I gave up smoking again in 2007 and romance stopped about the same time. There is still Rock n Roll tho - rock cake with cherries and bacon n stilton toasted in a roll lol.

      It would be incredible if Gary or Greeno were generous enough to grace my channel if they were ever in York again or allow me to be on one of their videos but with less than 1000 subscribers, for now, my channel is too small I suspect for them to let me share in their well deserved limelight. Steve at The Chippy Tour has indicated he might be up for a collab sometime in 2025 though www.youtube.com/@thechippytour

I have a smidgeon of knowing what lies behind the curtain having run my B&B for 9 years but your additional skills would deconstruct a restaurant meal adroitly, Archie.

    You were spot on with the final scores. I went to the Drakes in Knaresborough having never tried them before I was blown away by the quality of the fish, batter nice and crispy etc. Will def go to them again and next time in York will visit them. That fishcake was a poor comparison to a Sheffield fishcake.. Thanks for your review enjoyed it.

    Good review. Petergate Fisheries, as it used to be, has always had a good reputation. although I have not had one for a few years, The Knavesmire butchers steak pies are the best butchers pies I have tasted.

      Thank you Allan. Of course, Drake's don't do the chips crinkle cut any more of course, but they really DO remain popular with Yorkies as well as tourists which is good since what was once the excellent David's Hog Roast 15-20 years ago has sold out to more basic tourist menu and it's only trade is tourists who then go and sit in King's Square.
      You mentioning the Knavesmire steak pies has me thinking I ought to get hold of 3 different butcher's steak pies - Knavesmire, Ged Bell and Richardson's of Woodthorpe and blind taste them. What do you think ? Have I missed out any other great butchers? If you can recommend more, I might have to do a 1v1 quarter finals then semi finals and grand finale !!

      It is indeed, Antony. I came here to go to uni in 1972 and stayed. I grew up in Rhyl in North Wales and whilst it is a very depressed place economically after all the tourists decided to go to Spain in the 70s, I still miss the raw power and aroma of the wild Irish Sea. Welsh people have a word in Welsh for it - Hiraeth which has no direct translation in English but is a sort of 'deep longing' and whilst I intend to hopefully live for very many more years, my hope is that my ashes will return to Wales on my final journey home.
