  • In this data visualization I only include desktop web browsers, so no mobile web browsers. So the numbers will be different after 2008, when smartphones took off. Like the previous visualization this one goes back to the first graphical web browser, Mosaic. Before Mosaic most users browsed the web either with a text based web browser such as Lynx or using Nexus which had a graphical interface, which was easier to use.
    1993
    Mosaic
First graphical web browser, Mosaic brought the web to life with inline images and links.
    1994
    Netscape Navigator

    1996

    1998
Microsoft was taken to court for violating antitrust laws
    1999
America Online acquired Netscape for $4.2 billion dollars
    2000
Microsoft was found guilty and decided to split IE from Windows
    2001
IE was the official winner of the first browser war
    2002
Firefox Beta launched, originally called Phoenix, then Firebird
    2003
    Safari 1.0
    released by Apple
    2004
    Firefox 1.0
    finally released to the public
    2005
    Free Opera
    Opera browser becomes freeware
    2006
    IE 7.0
    Microsoft reintegrated IE into Windows
    2008
    Netscape Ends
Netscape Navigator is discontinued after version 9
    2008
    Chrome 1.0
    Google releases Chrome
    2009
    Mobile Web
Mobile browsers and apps start reducing desktop use
    2010

    2011
    IE 9
    Introduced new interface
    2012
    Chrome overtakes IE
    2013
    IE 11
    Final version of IE
    2014

I started using Opera when I was playing Tribal Wars 15-20 years ago. The game needed several quickly launched attacks to conquer another village. A keyboard shortcut to changes tabs allowed launching four (maybe five, just in case, you know) attacks in less than a second. I don't play Tribal Wars anymore, but I still use Opera.

@Ulu Zulu Partialy true, gov. organizations are BIG users of IE. Lot of the software runs in and requires IE. Why? Becasue it works and there is no need to replace it - that costs money.
Source: Iam sysadmin for small gov. org. with 150 users/stations, that is 150 Internet Explorers for you. Optional browser is allowed, but usualy IE runs all the time anyway since you cant run the programs you need for your work in any other browser (you can but it will end up with failure or some function will not be available, etc.)
Btw. I never worked in company where only included browser is allowed, there is no reason for that. Only reason i can imagine is that you need admin acces to install it, hence the reason for single browser is not so people cant use browser of thir liking, but unauthorized instalation. Iam sure if you talk to your local admins, they will deploy browser you like on your station (if you dont constantly say how they dont do anything and only sit behind screens that is).

I've been a Firefox user and fan for many years. Some current reasons I prefer it over Chrome (there are probably others that don't come to mind):
     ● Container tabs, which are awesome! I can keep login cookies separate between different accounts (personal and multiple organizations for whom I do admin) and even be logged into the same site as multiple identities simultaneously.
     ● Smooth scroll actually works - Chrome is noticeably jerkier when I use my scroll wheel, which I do a lot.
     ● The option to have links opened in new tabs automatically come to the top, rather than requiring me to click on the new tab to see what I just asked for
     ● Separate search bar with options to add multiple search engines available by a single click. And it's not just search engines - for example, my extra options include Wikipedia, Google Maps, Google Images, RUclips, IMDB, StackOverflow, and Amazon.
     ● Truly non-profit - no corporate profit interests involved.
There was a period a few years ago when FF was slow, but they seem to have fixed it - I haven't had any problems for a long time. The only problem I sometimes have is in dev tools, when styles sometimes fail to load.

Unfortunately, Opera GX was a CLOSE miss. The fact that you CANNOT REMOVE social media on the left toolbar was a bust. I REALLY wanted to adopt Opera GX, but the fact that you can temporary remove Facebook/Twitter/Twitch from the app sidebar (cant remember exactly), but that they cannot be disabled (according to Opera support directly, and no extensions existed to disable) was a deal breaker. I loved Opera GX, and would switch back in a heartbeat, IF they give user full control over whats on the HUD, which means control over the sidebar apps. This was around 18-24 months ago, and since it was both help.opera and their support forum (also a pain to navigate) that confired you could not perma disable those, i haven't looked back. Lemme know if that has changed.

I used Google Chrome for a long time and now recently just ditched it for Opera GX due to its gamer friendly nature. I wouldn't say it totally replaces Chrome but it comes real close imo. Definitely underrated. Also, with the Chrome Extension Add-On, most popular extensions can be used on Opera GX. The browser has its flaws, but as a gamer, I can forgive it since the pros outweigh them.

I then used mostly Chrome but also tried Edge, Firefox and Opera but always had some problem with usability on curtained applications/general workflow. I then started to personalize my Chrome Browser and have been using it ever since.
