The idea of "cycles" and such (outside of some S3 stuff) is really what makes this show confusing for some people. I consider the characters that talk about them to be either manipulative and/or just misinformed. The flow of cause-and-effect is twisted into a knot, but the timeline itself doesn't twist around and meet itself again. An event or point in time is not repeating just because you end up experiencing it twice as both your younger and older self in the same place, it's simply one and the same moment, and the circumstances that led you there as your older self are as fixed in the timeline as the circumstances that led you there as your younger self. You make the choices that you saw your older self make because you are one and same person, and have been led by all the same circumstances as your younger/older counterpart, which have left you feeling all the same desires.
