I think he said he doesn’t care if it fails. Im under no assumption that it wont hurt him financially and personally but the budget was his money. I dont know how his commitments to the studios distributing it.
I think a problem in general is trailers are too vague. When you watch old trailers they practically give the plot away, but there's a happy medium where you need to communicate the hook of the film for the average movie goer, otherwise where's the appeal?
Hey, it's his money. If he wants to piss it up a tree with some "passion project" then so be it. He didn't spend our money. If he has so much money that he can afford to burn over $100M of it on this junk, who are we to say anything? Let him burn his money. Let him have his "passion project".
I've seen this movie. 2/5. Art house, interesting, visually excellent, well acted. It is however a personal passion piece. If you are a movie maker or love art house you will enjoy it. It has the feel of a 6 hour movie that was cut to 2 hours. I knew it wouldn't be great because in Australia it wasn't even advertised.
I’m not expecting this to be a blockbuster movie. But I will watch once it comes to streaming. It will take an act of congress to get me to the movie theater.
Gotta be honest… and I love a lot of Coppola’s work, but I had the opportunity to read the a draft of this over a decade ago that was printed in the 90s I believe. And I couldn’t get through 30 pages. It was so all over the place and bloated with ideas it was impossible to keep track of. No one would finance it then either.
I remember reading on Crazy Days And Nights that the real reason why this wasn't finaniced by the studios was because of how he still supports Victor Slava and used to fund at least one of his Jeepers Creepers movies.
I saw the trailer and the first thought that came to mind was; “what is the plot?” I’m watching the trailer and seeing the visual graphics and hearing Laurence Fishbourne’s voice and watching Adam Driver on the screen and some of the other actors that I’ve seen before. I like Jon Voight but I’m not a fan of Adam Driver. I just don’t know any movie that he’s been in that would get me to watch it. Now I hear about the Audience Score of D+ behind Superman IV. That’s pretty harsh. Superman IV was an unfinished movie that was passed along and it shouldn’t have been. I think honestly; It looks like a movie with a lot of stuff thrown together with big name actors and actress and put Frances Ford Coppola’s name on the cover and nobody doesn’t even know what the movie is about. 5 million peanuts sounds about right.
Total budget: 120-136 million dollars (not including marketing) Total box office: 13.7 million dollars Without a doubt one of the biggest financial failures in cinematic history.
Absolutely going to win the next Oscar for best picture, cause the Hollywoke elite would never dare to upset Hollywood royalty, or to show their absolute hypocrisy... plus we all know the Oscar hasn't meant snit for a long long time...
I'm kinda used to defending Coppola's films everyone finds ghastly-Dracula is one of my favourite films ever. But with Shia LaBeouf having entered the game I'll have to sit this one out.
I had to go look up what it was about. Basically, it's Ford's Man in the High Castle but it's what if Ancient Rome survived to modern day. Not worth $120 million to produce that's for sure. I dunno if Adam Driver was the correct choice to play the lead.
I gave this a 10/10. I don’t care about the journalistic views of the film. Seems as though it’s hated because of factors that are not related to the actual quality of the finished product.
Interesting -- I was curious if someone was going to take this perspective. I've found that when something doesn't conform to someones expectations on format or structure they say it's bad. I'll have to check it out when it comes out of the theaters.
Wow Lionsgate is in serious trouble they have had flop after flop this year. I hope Lionsgate can come around and get through this big stumper there in because if they have more flops this year who knows what might happen and might hurt there financially. Ballerina doesn't come out until next year and probably will be a Hit for them because it looks good and John Wick is in it but they need something to come out and make money. I think he said he doesn’t care if it fails. Im under no assumption that it wont hurt him financially and personally but the budget was his money. I dont know how his commitments to the studios distributing it.
Bullshit -- He cares. That's all they have is praise and attention.
It's like making a movie out of a Picasso painting.
I think a problem in general is trailers are too vague. When you watch old trailers they practically give the plot away, but there's a happy medium where you need to communicate the hook of the film for the average movie goer, otherwise where's the appeal?
Trailer looked confusing AF tbh, kinda not surprised.
Saw the Wild Robot Friday and I loved it I hope it does well.
Walking out of this movie I now fully understand why Tarantino is retiring after number 10.
Is Megalopolis a sanctuary city?
No, only pseudo Roman's.
For flops
@@stephenpmurphy591 I think you missed the point of my comment.
Rome fell because of too many foreigners, and not enough work

It’s such a shame cause I actually enjoyed the movie although I do admit that it feels disorganized in some parts, but I like the movie
Doesn’t mean anything. General audiences are idiots, they just want to watch the same thing over and over.
Francis Ford Coppala is still alive? And making movies?
I thought he keeled over after that disastrous horror movie in 2001.
No and yes.
I just watched it and really enjoyed it. I don't get all the negativity.
I’ve seen a lot of advertising for this and still have no clue what it’s about. What I’ve seen is not encouraging.
Grace Randolph explained why it won’t really hurt Lionsgate as much as Copealot.
Megalopolis is not the worst film I have seen since January 2024 ☆☆
I didn’t even know it had released 😭 I was actually one of the 10 people really excited for this !
When it comes to bombs, nobody beats Disney.
Disney had a series of big hits this year.
Not even the Israel Defence Force can beat Disney at bombs.
Lionsgate is the new Disney this year.
The trailers left me puzzled
Didn’t even see a single trailer for this movie, didn’t know it exists until now
Coppala told me Youth Without Youth was his passion project. He can't have a do-over.
How in the world does superman 4 have a cinema score of C. That movie is horrendous. Also fant4stic might be worse. I know its aggregated but jeez.
I’m not expecting this to be a blockbuster movie. But I will watch once it comes to streaming. It will take an act of congress to get me to the movie theater.
he´s worth about 400 Mill and that is his passion project. I think he can stomach that
He sold his winery to finance it
At 85 who gives a shit?

@@jd0604 Exactly, it's as if you can take it all into the after-world.
Mario Puzo passed away in 1999. That explains it. Coppola couldn’t have him answer the question: what do you think of the American Empire.
It looks art house with millions of dollars thrown into it...I'll check it out..one day
Enjoyed it, caught it on IMAX. Mad film.
Could be interesting.
Even from the trailers I had no idea what is was about because they didn’t say shite in the ads I’ve seen personally
I remember reading on Crazy Days And Nights that the real reason why this wasn't finaniced by the studios was because of how he still supports Victor Slava and used to fund at least one of his Jeepers Creepers movies.
I'm hoping for a top 10 biggest flops of the year by New Years. I'm excited!
All by one studio lionsflopgate😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
This looks similar to cloud Atlas to me, like the premise of a modern Roman Empire in New York, might bag it on streaming.
A film like this should have had a $5 million dollar budget.
It only has the most surface level cosmetic relationship to Rome. It's more of a science-future movie.
It looks like one of those A.I. "Harry Potter if it was Versace" videos
Should be with roman uniforms, toga etc 2024....
And then on senate floor..
Total budget: 120-136 million dollars (not including marketing)
Total box office: 13.7 million dollars
Without a doubt one of the biggest financial failures in cinematic history.

FFC got lazy with green screen garbage in Twixt and probably other films. No big surprise.
I tried so hard to make it through Twixt and couldn't believe it was Coppola. I feel bad for Val Kilmer, being in that mess.
Wait they actually tried it?! Dude you cant remake this movie! Its a classic.
It was certainly the most weirdly interesting film of the year.
Coppola knows how to make a movie but sadly doesn’t know when to hang it up and simply retire.
How is this not the biggest bomb of the year?
Part of the terrible numbers is certainly the limitted nature of the release. My local theatre isn't showing it.
I didn’t hear about this movie until yesterday
I have not previously heard of this film. Did they advertise it?
Yes. It's been advertised everywhere
From the director of Godfather 3
I guess now we know why he couldn't find a studio to fund it or get distribution
Watch captive state
Interesting -- I was curious if someone was going to take this perspective. I've found that when something doesn't conform to someones expectations
on format or structure they say it's bad.

I know there is a Saw 11 coming out but il not sure when its going to be released but if it's next year in the fall then that's a long time for them to go until they can have another Hit after Ballerina
Im going to watch it in the theater dont care if its good or not im intrigued
What intrigues you enough to spend your money if not it's quality? Genuinely curious.
@@utmosdemos3645 Movies have gotten so bad and generic that im glad to support a good filmmaker trying something new and original. That is a low bar but a sign of the times. The movie does look high quality visually at least. Based on that and the synopsis I’m giving it a chance even if it might be bad.
I just read the synopsis and… wow.
It's stupid to say that a given genre, superheroes or whatever, is no good. It all depends on the writing.
They barely advertised the movie. I thought it was coming out next year.
That's a shame. He's always been a pioneer. This was an original IP. I'll see it when it comes out on bluray. Better than Borderlands.
Too be fair a lot of us knew it was gonna be a major flop, FFC movies don’t always appeal to general audiences and the polarizing reactions from Cannes Film Festival certainly didn’t help it either.
7 million dollars??
Eshhhhh
Why are people acting like Coppola hasn’t directed big set piece films? Bram Stokers Dracula was an enormous production, As was Apocalypse Now. Those films were also messy. Apocalypse Now was saved by John Milius and Michael Herr - Coppola tends to bloat things. Dracula was a mess. I love it, but it was a mess. When you literally ask every actor what scenes they want to see in the film from the novel you end up with a mess. Megalopolis was always going to be a disaster.
well maybe they should market it, so people know about it
They did
Sometimes a strong word of mouth is better than marketing. Especially if something is non-conformist.
