    I have both Caran dach and Cretacolor, the cretacolor tend to soften overtime and become hard to blend,. you really have to keep them in a dry cool place, where as my neocolor 2 is more enduring with different situations and papers

    Thanks for doing this video. I just won the 80 count and 20 count cretacolor aquastic sets in an auction and came here to see how they performed.

    I’m so glad you’re doing this comparison since I have the Cretacolor but just finally ordered the Neocolor today! I have the larger set of these and they were 57.00 for the set of 40. Which I thought it was strange since they were just a few dollars more than the smaller set. They over 70.00 now.

    I’ve always been confused/intrigued about water-soluble oil media. The sciencey part of my little brain tells me that oil and water don’t play or mix well with each other, but seeing your demonstration eases those doubts. I still don’t know how the two can mix with each other, but obviously they do...with beautiful results evidenced by your wonderful artwork!

      I know! I have always felt the same way!! It's crazy to think about. These also have some wax content, which doesn't seem like it would mix with water either. I swear it's some sort of sorcery! lol

    11:44 I couldn't see a difference between the two brands when the pastels were dry, but once you added water, the Caran D'ache was the clear winner.

      I agree!! It definitely shows better once the water is added, I do like the Neocolor ll's better for sure! The Cretacolors were fun to play with though!

    Two years later. I use Caran d'ach and waterbrush markers and Derwent watercolor pencils. None of my papers are smooth enough. Is what you're using smooth, smooth. What am I out to purchase. I'm in Montana so I'm compelled to shop online. Any help?

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  3 года назад

      Yes, the paper I am using is really smooth, it's the Strathmore 400 Series mixed media paper. If you click "show more" in the description of my video and scroll down, I have my materials listed there and I have a link for it where you can buy it on Amazon. The one I have linked is a small pad, it's only a 6"x8" but amazon also offers other sizes if you search for it. I should note, the link is an affiliate link, so I will earn a bit of a profit if you use it, but you don't get charged more. As far as shopping online goes, my go-to places are usually Dick Blick, Jerry's Artarama and Amazon.
      Some of the other paper that I really like to work with that is smooth and takes layers well is the Fluid Hot Pressed watercolor paper and the Arches Hot pressed watercolor paper. But those are a bit more on the pricey side than the Strathmore 400 Series mixed media paper is. I hope this helps!

    In my 30 neocolor 2 package it has lightfast ratings using 3 stars for excellent, 2 very good and 1 good. 7 of 30 are 1 star, 15 are 3 star and rest are 2 star.

    Hey Shana! I want to try the Cretacolor Neo charcoal pencils set because they're an oil base , and it's stay un the paper... And other products, because it's seems a good choice. But, in this case... I don't like the aqua oil pasteles from this brand... because it looks rough...I don't know... I think the Neo Color II are better... In my opinion... But, thanks for this comparison of this two brands 😁❤️

      I have been wanting to try the oil based charcoal too! I had never even heard of them until someone mentioned them in a comment on one of my videos a while back! I enjoyed these ones, I was surprised at how well they worked. But, yeah, it's really tough to beat the Neocolor ll's they are top notch! Now that I have had these for a while, I find myself reaching for the Neocolor ll's a lot more than this brand. Though, I often use them together.

    Is Caran D'ache Neocolor II oil pastel?

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  4 года назад

      Honestly, I'm not quite sure, I think they are mostly wax based, they were just the closest thing that I had to compare the Cretacolor ones to. I have to say, neither the Cretacolor or the Neocolor ll's feel fully like oil pastels, they are both harder and waxier than oil pastels.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  4 года назад +1

      I'm getting mixed messages online, at Jerry's they are called oil crayons and on Blick they are called wax pastels. 🤷‍♀️ I have a feeling that they are like colored pencils where they have both oil and wax in them.

    • @timeglass777

      @@CautionArtistatPlay Thank you very much for looking up. I found that it is in fact oil pastel - Caran D'ache web site calls it "water-soluble wax oil pastels". And oil pastel is consisted of "pigment mixed with a non-drying oil and wax binder".

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  4 года назад

      @@timeglass777 thank you, that is kind of what I thought, because I had looked into it a long time ago when I first bought some of the Neocolor ll's but it had been years so I couldn't fully remember. That makes sense as to why its described both ways on different sites. I had intended to look back on Caran D' Ache's site too but didn't get the chance, so thanks for looking into it!
