Hi Mark, nice floats ! Unfortunately as I'm not a bitter drinker, and only drink Guinness I'm going to make a few Guinness Gozunders using a 3mm drill bit to drill the widget and a 3mm barbecue skewer for the body. It will be a bit lighter and may not hold a live bait, but as you say it will be cheap and cheerful. ✌❤ Bob.
Thanks Gary, funny you should mention that, I did put them to use during a trip just before the end of last season on the rivers. ruclips.net/video/jfTgJmFtk0o/видео.html
Thanks Ben, they are worth making, more so if you like a drop of Boddingtons too as you are getting refreshment and an item of tackle, so the best of both worlds lol :D.
Loved the video. I make my own porcupine quill floats. Humbrol do fluorescent orange, which is pretty bright. I whip fuse wire on using cotton to make the eye, and then I use nail polish/nail varnish to seal it. It soaks into the cotton and seals tight, and is completely waterproof. Two coats will do. In 30 years of fishing I've never has one loosen or crack. Then I dip in white, then in orange. They're no masterpiece, but I can honestly say they are the best floats I've ever used. Incredibly sensitive, hold a reasonable weight, and their taper means you pop them up slightly and see them at distance or in a ripple. Minnows will take them under, yet a 6 inch float will hold two BBs, sometimes more. Crucian carp... no problem. The best thing is watching other anglers thinking I'm crazy or poor!! You don't see things like that much these days. Keep it up. Really enjoy your videos. Your passion just radiates out of you and it's infectious. I think you capture the essence of fishing and the experience.. not just footage of fish after fish being dragged out. When I'm stuck in and not able to go myself, your videos are the next best thing.
Wow, thank you for the priceless information dotsthots, that is very kind of you to share your experience and knowledge, I will take a look at their fluorescent paint range and purchase some nail varnish. Your comment about other anglers thinking you're poor or crazy made me smile, as we both know it is about the satisfaction of making and catching on something that you have crafted yourself, it is a feeling you can't beat really. Thanks for such kind words regarding the videos, it's nice to know that you enjoy them so much and that there is a community of like minded chaps out there who are willing to also share their experience and knowledge as you have done today.
That's weird. youtube do seem to be making it harder these days. I don't have a facebook account so I've emailed you, to the email on your contact page (hotmail one).
Good to see you back Mark and that you've thrown off your cold :) I used to make most of my floats in years gone by and you've got me interested in trying again. I'm willing to do a survey of all available beers to see which have widgets in them if that helps! Keep well Gavin..
Hey Gavin, thank you and I trust you're keeping well. Yes thankfully that cold is long gone, by the time it did the rounds with the family I think we was all glad to see the back of it. A survey of all the beers you say, I think that would be only fair to be honest (not that an excuse would be needed) haha.
Ace looking floats mate, will Defoe make myself a couple n give them a blast on my local Rivers... Will try & make a video with them too. Good luck for the start of the River season & tight lines 👍
Cheers mate, I think they would work well on your local rivers too, I know when I took them out near to the end of last season for their first outing they worked very well. I hope you do make a video, we can create a group of Boddington brothers using the floats :D. Best of luck to you too for the coming season.
Mark Erdwin Hi Mark, just thought I'd drop you a line ,I landed two beautiful fresh run grilse using float fished prawn ,under one of your Bodington bomber floats .They are perfect for the job,I had previously been using exspencive pencil type pike floats, but no longer thanks to you.By the way ,they weighed 9 and 12lbs fresh run from the sea. many thanks Regards Gerald.
Gerald that is simply brilliant to hear! You have no idea how nice it is to find that you have put them to use and they have helped put a couple of fish on the bank too, that is simply superb.
Have you tried a golf ball as a ledger weight ,you can screw an eyelet into them, they give a good casting weight but are great over silt as their mass makes them sit on top .They are also very effective for rolling a bait down stream, as they very rarely get hung up and move much closer to the natural river flow rate then a lead weight
Hello there mate, I must admit I have not tried that at all, that sounds really interesting and quite useful, I am guessing they would be slow sinking and perhaps different brands of golf ball might sink differently? Either way That is quite interesting, thank you for suggesting it.
Hi Mark I,m Steve. With some types you can drill directly through the centre for in line set up for others just drill pilot hole and screw an eyelet in,spray paint what ever colour suits and away you go,cheap as chips and highly effective due to their buoyancy .
That sounds really good thanks Steve, I had a look at some of the fishing forums and see they have been used for bass fishing etc, someone did warn about the liquid inside the golf balls, so if need be I suppose just common sense and some safety glasses for protection whilst drilling. Must admit I am quite intrigued about this, so thank you for mentioning the golf ball idea.
Oh right, I now know which ones to pick up at the local golf course, er I mean shop of course (lol). you're a wealth of knowledge Steve, thank you very much.
Nice vid. Watching you whipping took me back to when I used to make my own rods, inspired by articles by Terrry Eustace. You get get float eyes pretty cheap just google it.
Many thanks for the information Rob and the float eyes don't look too expensive if purchased in bulk. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thankfully the wind noise was not too bad as it had been a bit windy at times throughout.
HIYA MARK I LIVE IN NEWCASTLE UNDERLYME HAVE YOU EVER FISHED ANY RIVERS UP STAFFORDSHIRE WAY ? GREAT VIDEO ! NOT ONLY INFORMATIVE BUT YOU'VE EVEN GIVEN ME A LEGIT WAY OV GETTING A FEW EXTRA BEERS FROM THE OFFEY OUT OF THE MRS ! LOVE THE PERCH VIDEOS ESPECIALLY ! KEEP EM COMING M8 ! ALL THE BEST DAN HADDON AND HOPE THE WAIT FOR YOUR RIVERS TO REOPEN DUZNT DRAG TO MUCH ! TIGHT LINES !
Hello there Dan and thank you for your kind words. I have never fished any rivers in Staffordshire at all mate. Haha you're right it is a good excuse to get a few more drinks from the off license, especially when you can tell your wife that you will be upcycling the widgets into fishing floats. It's very good to know that you enjoy the perch fishing videos, I certainly love fishing for the species, a nice looking stripey is pretty hard to beat.
Hi, was just wondering if you recommend a Decent landing net? Mainly for all round use, thing like chub, tench and carp? Having trouble with breaking my nets:/
Sure thing sam. The Korum folding, spoon net would be suitable and is pretty sturdy, comes in either 22,26 and 30 inch sizes. I know the feeling with landing nets breaking, seems like there are quite a few that are just not good enough. I do also use a wychwood quickfold net, these cost around £20 depending on the size. Kind regards Mark.
Thanks Mark, there's special sense of achievement to catching on home made kit.
Thanks Tim and I do agree with that, you do appreciate it more in my opinion.
Great video, just ordered some Boddington's online. I will definetly be making some Boddington Bobbers. thanks Mark, great idea

Only "blatta" golf balls have liquid center all modern balls have solid centres

Mark Erdwin thanks, I shall give them ago! They seem pretty decent, cheers.
What paint did you use ?
I used Humbrol for the red paint in ferrari red and for the orange i used Plastikote in Tangerine orange.
