Hey! Pikmin has this really weird balance of being incredibly easy but also incredibly easy to lose pikmin since you cant swarm them or finely maneuver them at all, leading to clips like you showed at 13:36 where you're literally all the way to the right and you still lose a pikmin outside of your control. The cutscenes also dragggg, 3 15+ second cutscenes in a
I recently made friends with a very new Pikmin fan. He said he enjoyed hey Pikmin and didn’t understand why it didn’t have a good reputation. I had to explain the decade wait us veterans had to endure. I think now that we live in a world where Pikmin 4 is out and Pikmin has a brighter future than ever, I imagine more and more “hey! Pikmin is underrated” videos.
I think the dumbest part for me is that for god-knows-what reason, the game takes place on a different Planet... Supposedly? It's not meant to be PNF-404, even though it has all the same flora, fauna and even human artifacts as PNF. And as far as I know, they just don't explain it. They just put a gigantic elephant into the room and then refuse to adress it. I guess Arzest must simply love pulling random plot threads with HUGE implications out of their rear ends without ever once thinking it through, because they've been doing that for their Yoshi games too.
Also, every returning creature on the planet except Pikmin seem to be way bigger than they were in the mainline games, as well as the environment itself. There’s one level where you’re dodging rain drops like they’re bullets but in Pikmin 3 rain is no issue. Olimar got the S.S Dolphin back and flew off to a random planet that had the exact same creatures and objects but supersized… yeah you’re right it’s just bizarre plot elements for no reason. I was fine as just brushing this game off as non-canon but then Nintendo went and reused the sparklium concept in Pikmin 4 so I don’t even know anymore
I mean it's eerily (and unfortunately) p realistic if you consider for example the 3ds' decently high battery life vs the switch's battery that runs out in like a few hours ...or my switch just hates me
I feel like Hey! Pikmin wouldn't be so hated if the whole "Pikmin 4 is nearly completed!" Crap in 2017 didn't happen. The game is fine, it's kinda fun, but most of the new enemies are either very repetitive (there are like 5 different enemies that are just the Tiktiks from Hollow Knight) or just redesigns (Mockiwis are just the enemy equivalent to bulborbs) And the last world is very boring and bad; it's like the lilypad segment from Twilight River stretched to infinity mixed with the poisonous liquid from the rainforest levels in Mario. I say it's like a 7 out of 10, the last world really made the game crap its pants, but i feel like if they made a Hey! Pikmin 2 it would be more accepted as we wouldn't have the fear of "Oohh it'll replace the mainline saga!" With a few fixes of course...
hey pikmin has the most balanced pikmin in the whole series TBH, each pikmin gets its time to shine also I have a theory that the reason that olimar's voice is so high pitched in this game is because we are hearing him from our perspective, when we hear him in the other games we are hearing him from the perspective of the other captains (louie, the koppaiates, and the rescue corps)
I've said it before, I'll say it again. I grew up playing Pikmin 2 but never finished it, Hey Pikmin was the first Pikmin game I finished and was the reason I went back and played through the rest of the series. It's not a perfect game, but I think it is way better than many make it out to be. I wish it had a more accessible version available.
it's really funny both the timing and release period and even console this game and a certain Metroid game have in common. it's like nintendo was trying to use the 3ds to piss off fans that year.
honestly, i like the pink flowers in p2 challenge mode. it makes you strategize for that dungeon how best to use the limited resources you have available and while a few levels suck most are fine.
I am one of the persons that likes Hey! Pikmin, and I pretty much agree with you. It's just okay to play and has a couple of cool things, but thats's it. Not a bad game, also not a good game, but not so horrible as people make it to be. One thing I like is seeing how people absolutely hate it without knowing that sparklium, finding wild pikmin, and having a main hub separated from the maps, are all ideas from Hey! Pikmin that carried onto the main series.
As someone who originally started with Hey Pikmin as a kid (played all 4 mainline games by now) in retrospect, I think I still enjoyed it, but I can barely remember anything from my playthrough Which probably says a lot about the game tbh
Honestly, even as someone who adores the game, your critiques are entirely fair and justified. Personally, I’d love to see Nintendo take another crack at 2D Pikmin because I think it can be done extremely well.
I remember having a dream a few months before Hey!Pikmin was announced about a 3DS traditional pikmin game..... It had button controls and took place at a shallow little pond with tall grass in the water and rocks and female shear grubs around the shoreline. It also had a few cans without bomb rocks. I remember that vivid dream stuck with me..... When I first saw the trailer of Hey!Pikmin, I cried......
I always felt like Kirby Mass Attack works better as a side scrolling Pikmin game, at least a better version of Hey Pikmin. Though, getting 100% in that game may be worse than in this one.
Calling it an adventure platformer is so generous, it's closer to a relaxation game like Animal Crossing with how slow it is. Though I DO like it's open-ended nature, even though it's got a clear start and finish, it's collectibles are hidden pretty well for its genre. I am sad its Pikmin Park and Amiibo functionality weren't in Pikmin 4, the former would've been a great incentive to build up your numbers when you already have more than you need. I think this game is a goldmine for potential modded content, the Pikmin modding community is insane enough I could easily see them adapting enemies and treasures from here. Fun fact - you can skip the cutscenes if you're maxed out on Pikmin, and you can max out on Pikmin by starting the levels with immediately using your Amiibo.
As someone who grinded the deathless medals, that rising platform level gives me PTSD. I swear the Crumbug's K/D ratio is way higher than it should be, outclassing every other enemy in the game. Crumbug should go commit Pikmin extinction on itself
I know it's supposed to be a different planet and therefore wouldn't *technically* be canon to Pikmin taxonomy but I had to draw out an entire phylogenetic tree to explain the existence of the Fireflap Bulborb in my head. WHY did they have to randomly put a flying enemy in the Breadbug family it makes me wants to cry Anyways they're phosbats to me now. We love making highly significant traits monophyletic in this house
Honestly I know this game isn’t good but I’ll still love it simply because when I was younger I played this game in the long car rides. And its boring and dumb gameplay satisfied me. lol Yeah I know I need help
Kirby is the only side scroller who does the "stupid no backtrack door" right, because *they signal it* Wow, turns out just putting a *fucking signal* that you can head back does wonders, HUH?
As one of the 7 or 8 Hey! Pikmin fans on the planet, I can definitely agree with a lot of what was said in this video. This game was ultimately a victim of bad timing which forvever ruined any chance it might have had, but at the end of the day, it's really just a harmless spinoff with a few surprisingly neat elements. I also enjoyed it more than Pikmin 4 and the original Wii U version of 3, so take that as you will. (Seriously, when even the 2D side-scroller spinoff has a Piklopedia/Treasure Hoard but not the third mainline entry, something's wrong there.) Oh, and by the way, I actually got all of the deathless medals because I always challenge myself to beat a Pikmin game with zero Pikmin deaths. I'm proud of it, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Before anyone accuses me of being a new Pikmin fan--no, trust me. I've been one since before Pikmin 3 even came out. I've seen the hype cycles for 3, I've seen the hate for Hey, and I've seen the dry longing wait, and the grand return for 4 as well. However, I've always felt like the hate for this game is way too overblown. I agree with the video the Crumbugs are by far the worst part of the actual game and the 100% being tedious (still did it), but a special mention to some of the lag and bad framerate in a couple stages (notably the rain drop stage). But I've never felt like the game was deserving of this "it RUINED pikmin" energy and damning outlook. It's a spinoff that takes a couple of the core elements of the series (exploration in the sense of the "wow!" factor, the typical Pikmin and throwing them/calling them back) and tries it out in a vastly different gameplay style, a 2D sidescroller. It isn't meant to be this grandiose game. It isn't meant to be the main series, so of course not every element you find in a traditional Pikmin game is going to translate to it such as a focus on the strategy/management aspect. It's a cute game more on the Pikmin meant to be more of an "experience." That's why the cutscenes are like that and frequent. I'd say it succeeds on that front. It's just, not an offensive game. I think people expected far too much out of a late 3DS spinoff due to the legendary status of the first three games, and then wrote the game off immediately for being different, or for looking kinda mediocre before it even got a chance. I wouldn't say Hey Pikmin is really anything worse than "decent" but I also wouldn't really call it too much better than that. It's about a solid 6.5/10. A decent time with some solid ideas held back by some issues and a lack of a drive to go above and beyond much. But people treat it like a 2-3/10.
"it's just a spin off who care that it's bad" mfs when we were waitin' years for the next pikmin game "lol what hey! pikmin ?" expert jonklers when games like mg:r exist
To be fair, 100% completion doesn't unlock anything substantial like a cutscene or a different ending so yeah... I was kinda hated that but that's maybe a blessing in disguise because it means I don't have to 100% it every time I replay it.
As someone who actually has 100%ed Hey Pikmin, I actually never found the Crumbugs a massive issue (with some exceptions cause some levels they are a pain, but not to the extent as some others) My main strategy is to just not throw like a maniac and pray they hit them, but instead back up a a bit when you see one and take your time to adjust your shot. Afterwards then throw one at them. Doing so makes them much easier to deal with and in turn getting the deathless medals not as much of a hassle (they still suck ass though, I love doing deathless runs for the mainline games but this one really tests your patience)
Don't forget the reason why everyone was mad about this game is because Nintendo kept taking beloved franchises and just not making them the same way anymore. For example paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion etc
I want to remember Hey! Pikmin, but my brain has blocked all memories of it. All I remember is that I beat the game and did everything except for the deathless medals.
Hey pikmin has some really good ideas in there like it makes me really want the next main pikmin game to have super deep underwear sections like hey does that would be rad
During the buildup to pikmin 4s release and after pikmin 1 and 2 being put on switch I decided to go and play/replay every pikmin game leading up to pikmin 4, which included nintendo land's pikmin adventure, bloom, and of course, Hey Pikmin and yeah this sums it up pretty well, the most inoffensive, nothingburger platformer there ever was
I admit this was the first pikmin game I ever played, and I have to say, it was pretty decent, it actually is what made me interested in playing all main titles. It was pretty short but enjoyed it, even tho I got it for free, not sure I'd say the same if I paid money for it... It also has some bangers in it's soundtrack, and some neat creatures and area designs that I wish were used in a mainline game
"Well Arlo didn't single-handedly cause the downfall of Hey Pikmin" I don't know... Arlo is pretty damn influential, kind of like Scott the Woz is. You know how many Amazon reviews of Chibi-Robo Zip Lash mentions "Scott the Woz hates this so you should too!"
I was about to argue that this is in fact a bad game, but you covered it at the end. Going for 100% was awful. The awful hitboxes really brought down the whole experience for me. And the unskippable cutscenes just brought it down even more. Also doesn’t help that I felt like I had already played this game before and it was called Kirby Mass Attack.
Im glad someone else hates the stupid Crumbugs as much as me, I 100%'d Hey Pikmin and they were the worst fucking experience. Not to mention they were always put in the fucking SLOW AUTO-SCROLL LEVELS so if you messed up you jad to restart those slow ass levels. Shit sucked even if I find the game ok
That's not PNF-404. You see, this is the planet that the humans from the original planet moved to and created a new civilization. They then either moved again or went extinct.
I got hey pikmin as my first pikmin game. It put me off the franchise for a few years. I finally gave the franchise a second shot when pikmin 4 came out and I am glad I did.
11:31 The "wierd rock" is a concrete/cinder block with a few missing bits. I don't know if you called it a weird rock on purpose, but if you didn't know what it was now you do
2:28 Miyamoto reconfirmed Pikmin 4's continued development in another interview a month before Hey! Pikmin released, so there was no reason to believe they were the same game after that. Also where did they say Pikmin 4 got restarted, I remember rumors about this but no official statement?
Yeah, you would have to be insane to get all the Deathless medals in Hey Pikmin Awkwardly glances at my all deathless medals save file. Genuinely the crumbugs were not the worst part, the worst part is that your Pikmin have a chance to trip in certain areas of the game and when they trip they become unwhistleable and unthrowable for a few seconds, meaning you have no way to defend them from enemies.
First of all, the game dont take place on PNF-404, its a different, unnamed planet. Second: Good take on the game. Yes, it is quite easy, until you try to beat it deathless. It is sometimes funny how people give a game a stamp of being "boring" or "easy" while avoiding the harder stuff. Its like "The Witcher 3 is too easy" ... " Have you played on Death March difficulty?" ... "No, i am not a masochist"... And yeah, you could see it as padding, but for me, the Deathless Medals are one of the things that connect "Hey! Pikmin!" the most with the main titles for me besides collecting stuff, since i always try to beat mainline pikmin titles without or as few deaths as possible. Levels are usually pretty short and your amount of pikmin is quite low, so beating it deathless is way less tedious than beating any mainline pikmin deathless. Sure, the game is kinda brutal at some points, but it took me like an additional hour or two to complete it deathless, its like nothing copared to other "padding" like the monster medals in Tears of the Kingdom, the search for grubs in Hollow Knight or the different "find 100 things" in Rockstar Games titles. So in the end, yes, i am pretty sure Azest Games made the game and after someone at nintendo saw the concept, they gave them permission to use pikmin as theme. Still, its a nice and relaxed puzzle platformer that doesnt deserve all the hate it gets, especially from people who never gave it a honest chance in the first place.

It’s mid. There’s no bad game in this franchise.
i 1cced touhou 6 today :)
Cool. I've been trying to for a while now

As someone who actually has 100%ed Hey Pikmin, I actually never found the Crumbugs a massive issue (with some exceptions cause some levels they are a pain, but not to the extent as some others)
My main strategy is to just not throw like a maniac and pray they hit them, but instead back up a a bit when you see one and take your time to adjust your shot.
I… liked it.
MY MAN. LET'S GO W GAN
Hey Pikmin is just aggressively adequate
I want to remember Hey! Pikmin, but my brain has blocked all memories of it. All I remember is that I beat the game and did everything except for the deathless medals.
Hey pikmin has some really good ideas in there like it makes me really want the next main pikmin game to have super deep underwear sections like hey does that would be rad
As a 2000s Pikmin addict I can say Hey Pikmin is fine. It's not the worst thing ever.
there we go, thanks
Never underestimate the sheer hatred people can display for innocuous media just because it wasn't what they wanted it to be.
During the buildup to pikmin 4s release and after pikmin 1 and 2 being put on switch I decided to go and play/replay every pikmin game leading up to pikmin 4, which included nintendo land's pikmin adventure, bloom, and of course, Hey Pikmin
and yeah this sums it up pretty well, the most inoffensive, nothingburger platformer there ever was
Im not a pikmin player, but i keep watching your videos because god damn you are funny as hell.
hey pikmin probably has my favorite final boss of the series, berserk leech hydroe my beloved
my only issue with this game is how HORRIBLY it runs on the old 3ds models
I admit this was the first pikmin game I ever played, and I have to say, it was pretty decent, it actually is what made me interested in playing all main titles. It was pretty short but enjoyed it, even tho I got it for free, not sure I'd say the same if I paid money for it... It also has some bangers in it's soundtrack, and some neat creatures and area designs that I wish were used in a mainline game
I don't care how much you talk about Hey Pikman, I won't play it.
Based video thank you gamer
Hey pikmin makes Pikmin 4 so much worse than it could have been
I actually realy like hey pikmin its really cute and fun
"Well Arlo didn't single-handedly cause the downfall of Hey Pikmin"
I don't know...
The best part of it is the music.
Hay pikmin is the video game that revolutionized gaming.
soundtrack hits harder than 4 by far
I feel like people act like hey pikmin killed the franchise when in reality it's just a harmless 3ds game
The fiery young yellow wollyhop, elongated crushblat and berserk leech hydroe where the best things that ever came out of this game
"we're making pikmin video" and it's a hey pikmin video
Im glad someone else hates the stupid Crumbugs as much as me, I 100%'d Hey Pikmin and they were the worst fucking experience. Not to mention they were always put in the fucking SLOW AUTO-SCROLL LEVELS so if you messed up you jad to restart those slow ass levels. Shit sucked even if I find the game ok
3:03 It was called Balan Wonderworld but Wonderland sounds way better
That's not PNF-404. You see, this is the planet that the humans from the original planet moved to and created a new civilization. They then either moved again or went extinct.
I got hey pikmin as my first pikmin game. It put me off the franchise for a few years. I finally gave the franchise a second shot when pikmin 4 came out and I am glad I did.
11:31 The "wierd rock" is a concrete/cinder block with a few missing bits. I don't know if you called it a weird rock on purpose, but if you didn't know what it was now you do
HE WON A CEILING FAN!!
What fetch quest were you referring to in Pikmin 4?
Things like being forced to build all of the constructions and Louie's quest at the end of the game
Hey pikmin
Who pikmin
Hi pikmin
Where pikmin
2:28 Miyamoto reconfirmed Pikmin 4's continued development in another interview a month before Hey! Pikmin released, so there was no reason to believe they were the same game after that.
Also where did they say Pikmin 4 got restarted, I remember rumors about this but no official statement?
www.cbr.com/nintendo-pikmin-4-why-long-release/
It should be the first news article when you search "Pikmin 4 Development", RUclips isn't letting me send the link
hey pikmin
hi pikmin
hello pikmin
It would've been more fitting as a free iphone game like Run Mario or Flappy Bird.
Yeah, you would have to be insane to get all the Deathless medals in Hey Pikmin
Awkwardly glances at my all deathless medals save file.
