This is NOT a sponsored video!! I just thought it would be cool to try out an app aimed to combat food waste :)
That said, I got WAY more than I expected to get and I’m super excited to try this again in the future. Though I just got pastries this time, I’ll try to get more variety next time… perhaps I’ll make a meal with what I get?
Since I cannot consume all these goodies by myself, I’ll be sharing them with friends within the next few days!

I used to work in a college cafeteria and at the end of the day there would be all this food that had to be discarded and remade the next day. The higher ups DEMANDED that all this food be thrown straight in the garbage but never gave a good reason. My boss thought that was absurd and would just let us take whatever we wanted or offer it to random kids that were walking past. As a college kid a random meal is basically a blessing.

I think for a lot of establishments, a concern is if someone were to get sick after eating the food and went back there to claim some sort of compensation. Usually by the time there’s leftover food it means that it’s very late in the day/the place has closed for the day already, which then means that the food is probably no longer as fresh as before. But personally I do find it very wasteful when I see all the food being thrown away :( And I also buy discounted sushi in the evening once in a while haha.

Not to rain on anyone's parade but this app is cute if you want to help small bakeries and restaurants earn a bit more while you try discounted goods. Basically win win.
But you're not helping food waste all that much with it.
Most of the food waste comes from food production before it even reaches the stove/oven. Preparing food generates more waste than excess of it (since restaurants generally avoid having too much because it generates loss of profit through increased cost)
Buffets are the absolute worst for food waste.

In my city (in Italy), there's a place where I can get 3 panzerotti al forno (basically smaller calzone pizza, one of them is still more than enough to fill you up) for 2,99€ with this app. Usually the place sells them for almost 4€ each. They're not even dry at all, you pop them in the microwave for a minute and they're as good as new, and you get 3 meals for less than 3€. Unbeatable.

It was founded by Ronni Kahn and Ozharvest trucks go around to supermarkets, restaurants and cafes, hotels, retailers, airports, etc and they collect wasted fruits/veggies, meats, cooked meals, pre packed items, dried foods, baked sweets, dairy, eggs and drinks. Once they have collected them they deliver the foods to charities to help people in need of fresh food. According to a 2018 post made by Ozharvest they repurposed and rescued 180 tones of food a week from 3,000 food donors, then they delivered it directly to 1,300 charity agencies.

In 2004 she started up Ozharvest and it is still going today all over Australia.

the bakery i work at does these now, we’re supposed to pack each bag with $20 min of product each and i think they sell for like $7-8 which is insane value. granted a lot of it doesn’t have a long shelf life since fresh pastries are better enjoyed fresh but it’s food that would otherwise go to the trash and i think it’s a great way to get a little fun snack and try some new stuff without breaking the bank. plus you can get lucky and get something that might serve as a nice breakfast the next day or a little snack/treat tomorrow!

My only hang up over this would be my food allergies. I can't just randomly eat something. It's one thing if there's like sliced almond on top, but often things can have hazelnut in them without being visible from the outside.
I'm also vegetarian and wouldn't want to eat anything that e.g. has gelatine in it.
But otherwise that's a great idea!

I'm super late to the party here, but many supermarkets where I live do fruit&veg packages! I also don't eat meat and am quite a picky eater, so the complete mystery packages aren't really an option for me, but fruits and vegetables are generally just fine. Something like that might work for you too if it's available in your area!
