@@AutoAuctionRebuilds Hey, I commented below, but ill comment here. I'll send you an email, but I have 4 wheels for this car. I bought a wrecked one in????? 2005???? And I took the wheels and tires off of the car. Most of the parts have been sold, but I know I still have the wheels buried. I have an 87 GNX... And your issues are not that major, ill email you or Instagram message you.
Randy, I'm an old school GM tech. I can tell you that design of MAF was used on a lot of the GM SFI engines back in that day. The interesting thing was, the C3I distributorless ignition system was prone to popping back through the intake during cranking on occasion. It normally happened when you just didn't hold the key QUITE long enough for the engine to catch, and it would pop back through the intake. Trouble is, that particular MAF would get blown the hell apart nearly every time it did it. I replaced COUNTLESS MAF's on these, 88 Royales, 98 Regencys, Rivieras, Bonnevilles, you name it.......pretty much all the GM cars that had the early C3I system, with this design of MAF. Guaranteed, you have a bad MAF, and the intake pipe situation is trash - fix these two items, and that car will probably shock the hell out of you.
Hey. I have a question for you. When you say that the C3I distributorless ignition system "was" prone to popping back through the intake, breaking the MAF in the process. How did the engineers remedy that? Was it ever improved upon? Is it something I'd have to be wary of when I'm looking for a GN myself? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I'm familiar with SBCs and the GN v6 is a different beast that I'm not familiar with though it's my dreamcar.
The horsepower numbers were underrated for insurance prices back then. Quit a bit above the factory numbers. If it has an aftermarket boost controller it most likely isn’t stock. From those that I’ve known who have/had Grand Nationals they don’t really like anything less than 93 octane. Those tires are meant to keep you from spinning in order to plant all the power on the ground so they are the better option. Guarantee when it’s running 100% right it will still spin them if you really want it to.
@@Legend_1754 you are correct in also saying they didn’t want it beating the corvettes on paper however they knew everyone would figure it out soon enough. They underrated several cars back then for insurance purposes. There were cars in the 60’s and 70’s that produced over 400 on the dyno but the manufacturers would rate them in the 300 range. For one reason they knew they would be buying the cars as well and didn’t want to pay the higher insurance costs as well as not scaring potential customers away with the higher coverage prices.
Looks great. I had a 1987 Buick t-type metallic blue with the limited slip differential. It was a fast and nice car up until it was stolen and burned 7 years later.
Even with all of its faults, I still love that Grand National Randy! I think that one fix you mentioned using a LS1 maf sensor is the way to go. At least you can get replacements for them. I can't wait to see all the fixes on this one. Those replacement ties and wheels you put on don't look that bad for now. They will work. Running around on tires that scrape and rub all the time sucks. Ask me how I know. When those other 15x7's become available, you will get the G.N back to what it should look like. Great buy Man!
We do really want this Buick Grand National and the Monte Carlo SS be part of the power tour 2024 cause that would be so cool looking forward for it! Your fan from the Philippines!
Wow, you just brought back some great memories with that Grand National. How nostalgic!!! I love that car. I dont mind the new rims at all. To me they fit the Era of the 80s. I look forward to seeing more on this car. Love your videos always
Hey Randy, Alex @ Legit Street Cars bought a Grand National with the same engine issues and wheel and tire issues. He has several videos on what he did to fix it all. This might save you some time in diagnosing the problems. Nice car. Watch all your videos.
I would loose all the after market junk like that nasty boost gauge . That entire air intake system is wrong. That clamp is a no hub plumbing clamp for a drain pipe. The car itself is in amazingly good condition I would search for the original air intake. Great find Randy ! I absolutely love the t tops .
Damn Jennifer, you do know something about automobiles. I was reading this and my jaw dropped by what you wrote. My daughter is the same way. She owns a Honda Civic and I caught her one morning changing out the CV joints. She never even told me they were bad. She just took care of the problem herself. It ran great after. However she had me retorque everything after a few day's past because she noticed it felt loose. She could not get the strength to tighten certain things. That's when I shared a little secret about something called a cheater bar. Surprised that she is so smart to take on CV joints but didn't realize you can use a torque wrench or cheater bar to tighten all the bolts.

Some friends that were stationed with me in the military, bought one brand new in 87. He would take his out and get it up to around 70 to 80 mph then shift to overdrive and the back wheels would spin. Gem of a car and is still one of my dream cars.
Love it all. If the alternator is not charging, look for the battery light. If that's not working the alternator will not charge. Finally a turbo regal. Awesome Randy!
I have a 2004 Buick Park Avenue Ultra Supercharged Series III and my engine did that and I had to get a New OEM fuel pump and Fuel Filter and use no ethanol gas as these older cars were not made for it.

3:05 All turbo Regals had A/C. And 3:46 355lbf.-ft at 2000 RPM. The only difference 86-87 was the EEPROM, which kept boost at 15psi vs. dialing it back to 13psi after a few seconds at WOT.

ANS was a performance garage here west of Chicago. It specialized in GN's, Syclones, Typhoons and Turbo Trans Ams. Since it has the boost controller on it, it also most likely has a chip too. No telling what grade fuel you might need to make it run as is.
Hi Randy! Try typing in "aluminum wheels for 87 Buick GNX" instead of Grand National. I found a bunch of them. I saw Classic Industries and avoided them. Please note: those wheels come in 15 x 7 and 15 x 8, with the 8s on the back.
I absolutely love the Grand Nationals. I follow all the Mecum and Barrett Jackson actions and I think you got a pretty decent deal. Great video and looking forward to seeing all the progress.

Be careful driving the car without the MAF Sensor not being plug up. The car could be running lean while in boost which is dangerous for a boosted car. The fix for most of those cars to get rid of the MAF and go aftermarket ecu to run only a map sensor which is built into the ecu and make the car go from a MAF base car to a Speed density car which can run only a map sensor. That is big money to do all that work tho and you have to find a tuner.
Nice GN. I had mine for 14yrs, ordered from factory. Once I watched this a flood of ideas & fixes (and tips/tricks) came right back. I know this car inside and out, and then some. I already know the things you'll need to do to get it working 99.9%. Btw, I believe the correct governor specs are at 127mph before it begins to sprout its wings. I had the 1987 w/digital dash & a whole host of options (all the ones you have too & more). 0-60 in 4.7secs (mine). Change that intake & MAF sensor (and much more). The newer wheels look much better!! Have fun.
Looks great Randy! Those wheels look like you put the race track wheels on it. Lol! And yes, everyone would love to own one of these, me included. Still love my 87 Mustang I bought instead of it, but it is one of my favorite cars from the 80's. Hopefully you can get it running right soon.
from what ive seen, the only option car is missing on inside is electronic touch climate control. and under the hood, looks mostly all stock, but you have a adjustable wastegate for the boost. be careful if you still run the stock fuel pump and its not "hot wired". usually most people run their own 12 gauge hot wire back to fuel pump as stock wiring doesnt deliver much power to it. this is almost a must to do when upgrading fuel pumps . also, the flex tubes connected the turbo to maf, most replace with either a polished metal tube or chrome tube intake. good luck and have fun with it, she looks nice!,, also, your brake light is mostly the "acummulator bulb" that is stuck on the side of the power master. this is most always the source of brake light. if thats not it, the pressure switch. and as a bonus, theres an idiot light on the right hand side thats not used, doesnt even have a bulb behind it its about halfway down the plastic panel that reads "power injection" , well i put a bulb behind it, and hooked it up to a boost switch that would turn it on at boost. yes this was a factory warning light that was never used on the gn, as GM was planning to put a water injection system on it to spray water into the intake upon boost. if you take off the dash and shine a light on the right side warning light panel you will see the power injection label :)
Another great one! My reason for subscribing to Randy's channel is because Randy delivers content of cars that I grew up around. Its nostalgia for me. Born in Atlanta back in 1988 and was raised in Buena Vista, GA (small rural town outside of Columbus,GA population 7,000 people). Well growing up in Buena Vista back in the 90s was a blast. I grew riding around in Chevy Luminas, Oldsmobile Ninety-Eights and Cutless Cieras, Ford Tempos, Buick Regals and Centuries, Pontiac Sunbirds and 6000s, Dodge Spirits and Dynasties, Chevy Cavaliers, Corsicas and Berettas. Randy maybe slightly older but Randy would be someone My brother and I would have hungout with back in the day growing up. 😊 But the main reason I subbed to his channel is because he delivers real life stuff for people who aren't rich.
I was born in 1961. We still rode horses back then, lol. I now have a 1992 Thunderbird Sport, a 2 year only production run. 1991 and 1992, only 17,400 made. Is it as fast as the Buick no but it's a highway cruiser with lots of torque.
That is an awesome car. I drove one brand new in 87 It felt like the front wheel lifted right up. Once that car is running good, you're gonna love it more.
Nice car Randy!!! The new wheels look great on it. Can’t go wrong with original or “period correct” wheels and raised white letter tires on an older car.
The 3 plug on the passenger side is for a analog dash if it came equipped with one. They had it wired for both. And the red and green wires are for a aftermarket power antenna that isn't hooked up.
That's not the correct maf for that car. That's a replacement they don't run well on these cars. I think that's for a fbody . The original has the plug that goes straight down not to the side. Put a maf translator on it. And the ls1 maf is the same part number for a 99-2005 buick century with a 3100 engine. I have 2 of these cars.
The pipe connecting the turbo compressor with the MFS should be present tight. It is present in European cars very solid, especially in European cars there is a special mesh that protects the measuring "hot wire" in the MFS. (this "wire" is very delicate). Moreover, you can see how dirty it is "Venturi nozzle" (it must be clean there), the task of the air filter. I think the computer is having difficulty selecting the fuel dose by failure to determine the correct amount of air sucked in by the engine. There is also a "left air" option further into the intake system, as you mentioned. Sorry for any mistakes, I'm writing using a translator
Yes Randy I think that you will get it done and running very good I think that you should get all of the markings that need to be on the Grand National and put them back on it and you will have a very ausom car when it is done Charlie kretschmar Phoenix Arizona
My first car was an 87 Regal. I'd love to find one to fix up. I'm not looking for a grand national or a show car. I'll probably catch hell for this, but I'd probably v8 swap it and update the suspension a bit, but it would be my car so it would be my choice.
Try get in touch with Vice Grip Garage or maybe Junkyard Digs maybe one of them might know where to find the mass air flow for you that wont cost you a arm and a leg
Excellent work getting a GN for the channel! Also, shocked that you invoked “LSC” in a video, but that video series was informative… kept up the great content!
Great find! I’ve dealt with ACV before plenty of times and found that a lot of car issues are aren’t discovered until after delivery. ACV is good overall.
That sound is called "compressor surge"......when you close the throttle blade the air that the turbo was pumping gets bounced back and forth between the compressor wheel and the throttle blade.....very Iconic. A Blow off valve mitigates this. Hey American racing Outlaw 2's....I had those on a Duster...looks great!
@autoactionrebuilds Try to disconnect the MAF sensor & see if it runs better. The fuel sock on the pump may be collapsed which could be causing a restriction.
Nice GN. Wrong grill, need an 87 grill. Have fun and be safe. My dad and I have owned a Turbo TA, a 1987 Regal Turbo T, and a 1987 Grand National in the past.
Looks like Granatelli sells compatible MAF sensors for less than $500, and LS ones with adapter cables for less than $300. Looking forward to this build!
The reason the cars were limited to 124 mph was for the tires from the factory. The fan delay relay (black driver side bigger relay, 25527402, also ACDelco 15-8229) controls the high and low speed fans along with the cooldown cycle, and can drain the battery if it malfunction.. The other plug on passenger side is for the standard tachometer/ boost gage; the one installed on the pressure switch is used only on the digital dash syste. Those cars are VERY voltage sensitive, and will act the fool if voltage is not right. The factory MAF sensor really needed the screens to keep the air straight. The dual rear spin is not always proof of the limited slip. If it has aluminum drums it was NOT limited slip; Iron drums meant limited slip. The only true way to know is to open the rear and inspect. Also, the partial VIN is on the driver side of the engine block at the transmission flange, and on the transmission case on the passenger side horizontal flange. The build sheet would also be inside the driver's door and on the rear seat frame, plus on the actual frame of the car.
They found that if the engine had a MAP sensor that with the fuel maps in the computer the MAF wasn’t needed. It ran by (SD) Speed Density instead. That GN is a sweet ride hope you hang on to it . Oh ,and you’re right , I remember guys putting those new wheels like yours on back then. They look sharp!
Good video & project Randy I like the temporary rims on the car good choice for the cooper tires can't wait to see what else you do to the car I love the G Body's & El Caminos The coopers stick to the road have a good day
Please LS Swap that Monte Carlo and use it for a power tour rather than the Grand National but if you get GN all fixed up it would be a worthwhile investment to keep
Instead of replacing the entire brake system, you may only have a bad pressure accumulator. Under proper operation with the key on, engine off, you should hear an electric pump come on after you press the brake pedal about 10-20 times. If the pump comes on every time you hit the brake pedal, you more than likely have a bad accumulator. Do not drive it like that. If you have to do a panic stop, let's just say that you won't... The brakes won't come on for 3 to 4 seconds after you stand on the rock hard pedal. Ask me how I know! Nice car by the way! I'm excited to see more videos on this one!
I graduated high school in 1987 and this is the car I wanted ! I did have a jeep body, though a 1979 Malibu that I put a 400 small block in with just a little bit of work. These cars are really fast. That grand national was so quick!!
I bought my 87 grand national in 2014 47k miles. I had wanted one since highschool. The day I brought it home I kept opening the garage door to look at it lol. Have done some mods over the years currently alky injected 420 rwhp and 530lb/tq. Have to take a nap after driving it

from what ive seen, the only option car is missing on inside is electronic touch climate control. and under the hood, looks mostly all stock, but you have a adjustable wastegate for the boost. be careful if you still run the stock fuel pump and its not "hot wired". usually most people run their own 12 gauge hot wire back to fuel pump as stock wiring doesnt deliver much power to it. this is almost a must to do when upgrading fuel pumps . also, the flex tubes connected the turbo to maf, most replace with either a polished metal tube or chrome tube intake. good luck and have fun with it, she looks nice!,, also, your brake light is mostly the "acummulator bulb" that is stuck on the side of the power master. this is most always the source of brake light. if thats not it, the pressure switch. and as a bonus, theres an idiot light on the right hand side thats not used, doesnt even have a bulb behind it its about halfway down the plastic panel that reads "power injection" , well i put a bulb behind it, and hooked it up to a boost switch that would turn it on at boost. yes this was a factory warning light that was never used on the gn, as GM was planning to put a water injection system on it to spray water into the intake upon boost. if you take off the dash and shine a light on the right side warning light panel you will see the power injection label :)
Electronic A/C was not an option on the 1987 model Regal cars. The rest of your information is correct.
Nice car, Randy! Get it ready for Power Tour.
I said it before- now time for the G-Body Olds 442! I have been loving the videos recently.
I have a Grand National GNX 1987, bought it with 0.25 miles… Love the car!
The 3 plug on the passenger side is for a analog dash if it came equipped with one. They had it wired for both.
And the red and green wires are for a aftermarket power antenna that isn't hooked up.
Thank you for the info sir!
Loving the G Body collection, Randy!
I appreciate it.
The pipe connecting the turbo compressor with the MFS should be present
tight. It is present in European cars
very solid, especially in European cars
there is a special mesh that protects the measuring "hot wire" in the MFS.
(this "wire" is very delicate). Moreover, you can see how dirty it is
"Venturi nozzle" (it must be clean there), the task of the air filter.
I think the computer is having difficulty selecting the fuel dose
by failure to determine the correct amount of air sucked in by the engine.
There is also a "left air" option further into the intake system, as you mentioned.
Sorry for any mistakes, I'm writing using a translator
Randy those wheels are AWESOME. Love this car!! Can’t wait for next video!!
Yes Randy I think that you will get it done and running very good I think that you should get all of the markings that need to be on the Grand National and put them back on it and you will have a very ausom car when it is done Charlie kretschmar Phoenix Arizona
A true movie! I’m so excited for the G body series! Keep it up randy!
Hope you enjoy it!
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds I did! Thanks for always being awesome and nice on Instagram!!!!
Those new wheels do look awesome I also like the originals but new ones pop.
Randy, I would suggest using flex seal on your mass air flow for the Buick GN to seal the crack.
Both the Monte Carlo SS and the Grand National are two of my all time favorites! Great video Randy!
Excellent work getting a GN for the channel! Also, shocked that you invoked “LSC” in a video, but that video series was informative… kept up the great content!
Another great car that has been through too many of the wrong hands until now. It's now entering it's second life.
It says premium fuel on the dash. Great car.
Great find! I’ve dealt with ACV before plenty of times and found that a lot of car issues are aren’t discovered until after delivery. ACV is good overall.
Well as good as this thing looked I figured there was something wrong with it for the price lol overall very happy with the car though
@@AutoAuctionRebuildsit’ll be alright!
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds You’ll come out on top like you always do. Love the channel! Been a subscriber since the beginning.
Will do man thank you.
Classic Industries makes a 15x8 aluminum repop of those wheels and it shows that Goodmark has them in stock
Sorry. I got that backwards. Goodmark makes the wheel, Classic Industries has them in stock. 😂
I don’t want the 15x8 I want 15x7
That grand national is absolutely stunning. I love that body style. I also love the body style of the monte Carlo ss you bought. I'm so envious.
'80 hella awesome decade....had so much fun.
Man they were cool times for sure.
I agree 💯 on this. Had my best times when these cars came out. 😌
Nice GN. Wrong grill, need an 87 grill. Have fun and be safe. My dad and I have owned a Turbo TA, a 1987 Regal Turbo T, and a 1987 Grand National in the past.
Man what a beauty! I have a soft spot for those 80s GN’s! You’re definitely lucky to get it for that price!👌😎👍
Thanks Rebuilds 👍
This car is for real, and when you find a GN that is real ,you get it while you can. I think you did well with this special car!!
Thanks for the video Randy can't wait to see this girl run smooooth.
Check to see if the mass air flow arrow is facing the right direction
Great car for the Chanel love to see you bring this one back to its glory days
There actually was a GM TSB in the late ‘80’s to disconnect the MAF on some cars and run without.
How can you run without a MAF?
No LS is coming to the Monte. It’s going to be a 383.
Hey Randy there are two gn wheels on market place in pa for $150.
I bought my 87 grand national in 2014 47k miles. I had wanted one since highschool. The day I brought it home I kept opening the garage door to look at it lol. Have done some mods over the years currently alky injected 420 rwhp and 530lb/tq. Have to take a nap after driving it
Its like you took us to the candy shop with these back to back GM videos. Its always a great day when you upload. Awesome finds Randy!
I’ve just sorted this problem on my Saab 93 turbo with smoke machine it was map sensor and a crack in throttle body crack found by smoke test.
Great videos keep up the good work mate❤💯
