If we think about the MLS as a development league for European sides, then it makes sense to have MLS all-stars play against the top European clubs to show if any of the players could legitimately compete in Europe. Obviously, we've had players like DeAndre Yedlin, Matt Turner, and Clint Dempsey start in the MLS and successfully play in Europe afterward. But if we're trying to be on par with the Premier League, Serie A, or the Bundesliga, then the East vs. West thing makes sense...but no one legitimately looks at the MLS as competition for top European sides at the point, so they should keep the current format.

Seeing this gap in quality between them and this Arsenal team hopefully should make the people running the MLS and the the respective teams want to get better. I get that this is a team assembled in a short period of time argument but if the same was flipped and it was the PL- all stars or the Serie A all stars playing against the MLS All stars - I bet the score would've been way worse. @@Pako_equis The salary cap/draft system is a huge disadvantage for the MLS's growth..... It works in the NBA & NFL because the players don't have a choice.... But in MLS they are competing with hundreds of soccer leagues... The only way you get outside attention is if you have the best players/best teams.... So at the moment its still just domestic growth.... But getting high profile people like Rooney as manager and Beckham as owner helps a lot.... I would pack the MLS full of high profile names in management positions and general manage positions.... I followed Montreal a bit... Purely because Henry was manager...

They dont watch Girona & Sevilla... No-one cares about most teams in La Liga...They want to see the magic, the dominance of Real Madrid etc... They want to see history being made... A really serious point here. Football (and the term is important and part of the point I’m going to make here) is not a US dominated or indeed sport. It has its history that goes back a very long time outside of the United States. Stop calling it Soccer. It’s football. Stop using US sport terms when discussing or commenting on this sport. Respect the game, it’s history, origins and fan base by acknowledging the sport for the most successful global sport it is. Stop trying to make it NBA, NFL or MLB. It’s not. It is Football. In the same way the rest of the world does not attempt to ‘localise’ those sports. Stop with the showbiz, terminology changes that have existed for over a century or more and make it some sort of US sport. If you guys do that, then maybe it will become more successful and the MLS won’t be seen by ageing professional football players from Europe (mainly) looking at it like a retirement fund and essentially a low level, poor imitation and ultimately a US version of the global sport. It is not a game for the US to change. The sooner the US recognises this and stops with the showbiz parts ;which works well for your sports) the better and sooner the MLS will become a serious league that attracts and develops younger players.

They should maybe consider not doing the Allstar game to be honest. It was a lot of fun for me as an arsenal fan and it’s kind of a fun thing to see the best mls players out there BUT let’s be honest, a regular MLS team would’ve played a lot better than the “All Star” mls team. It’s hard for people who have never played the sport to understand but a team of a bunch of superstars who have never played together or been coached together is going to do a lot worse than a regular team that has tactics and chemistry.

It wasn't an even playing field. They should probably face a Saudi League all star team next time, leave the 'friendly' games to European teams that tour the USA so the American fans can watch their favorite EU teams play in the flesh.
