Leslie's Les Paul Jr and Sunn Coliseum Amp Head tone is so fucking fat like I have never heard before. Unfuckinbelivable feedback that has the Sunn's tubes so hot they had the back grills off and mini clip-on fans blowing directly on them to keep them from melting down.. which is as a guitarist a major mother-fucking disaster for any high wattage amp head making them junkyard ready.. o;)

The combination of that Les Paul Jr and the Sunn Coliseum PA head (which I understand was delivered to Leslie by mistake when he had actually requested Marshalls) was magic ! What a perfect mistake. I have not yet heard that sound captured by any modern amp or effects technology. Not to mention Leslie's uncanny and underappreciated sense of timing and phrasing -- both in his guitar playing and vocals. When I saw Mountain in concert at the time of the Mountain Climbing album his vocal phrasing knocked me out as much as his guitar work.

Howdy Depp. Great post! Anyhow, I'm pretty sure at this point Leslie wasn't using a Junior, but instead was using a P90 equipped Flying V. At least that's what he was using when I saw him in the Summer of '74.
The Capitol Theater CD is great, and IMHO could have been the best Mountain live CD, if only Felix's bass was more audible.

No. This was after both West, Bruce and Laing and the Leslie West Wild West Show that followed the first break up of Mountain. According to the tour archives, by the time of this concert Mountain had reformed in a version that consisted of Leslie West, Felix Pappalardi, Corky Laing and the added guitarist David Perry. They played at the Capitol Theatre on December 29th and 30th, 1973.
