    I hunted with the Shawnee Squirrel Hunters for several years until I got too old to climb those ridges. We were always looking for the .22 HP round that was the most accurate and would drop a squirrel right on the spot. Most of us only did head shots. What we found was that a flat nosed .22 round would kill a squirrel about as well as a HP, but a round nose often penetrated and kept going and left a wounded squirrel to get away and die a lingering death.

    Most of the higher caliber handgun loads like 10mm, .357, and .44 that are intended for large game/predators such as bears and intended for maximum penetration are heavy grain hard cast flat nose, so this test backs that up.

But there is always some expert telling me I don't know what I'm talking about. I dropped two deer within minutes of each other with some of the bullets I sent you, and they didn't move a foot, and that was with a revolver! It's because of turbulence causing suction. The RN sends the displaced medium straight to the tail where it swirls and "sucks" on the bullet.
    Flat nose displaces the medium further away from the bullet and there's less turbulence at the tail.

  • @TheExplosiveGuy
    @TheExplosiveGuy 3 месяца назад +2

    The flat nose bullets penetrate better because they cause cavitation around the bullet, the only thing in contact with gel is the small flat on the nose, causing minimal drag. The cavitation is confined to just around the bullet, it doesn't create a giant cavity like a hollowpoint or rifle round would, which immediately dump all their energy right after impact, the FMJ FN dumps it's energy slowly and consistently. It's the same principle with those new rifle rounds designed to shoot into water, only the tip of the bullet contacts water while the rest of the bullet travels through a bubble of vacuum. As soon as it slows enough to contact the ogive it rapidly slows down and then quickly dumps it's remaining energy. Round nose bullets have a much larger contact area on the nose causing a lot more drag, which is why it leaves larger but shorter wound cavities. If you graphed out the velocity of either bullet from the moment of impact, the RN would quickly arc down with a radial curve all the way to the bottom, while the FN would have a longer, less steep and more linear line, with a rapid drop-off curving down at the end.

The flat 👃 nose absolutely penetrates better than “ball” round nose. I shoot bowling pins once a week and you can’t use anything smaller than a 9mm due to ricochet. I have always been told that the flat nosed rounds basically push a small pocket of air in front of them. When shooting jell, the air splits the jell and lets the bullet contact the jell less, giving less resistance and better penetration. It’s an anomaly that doesn’t translate to shooting something more solid. At least that is what I heard over the years.

      On living flesh a flat nose stays it course better. Round nose has been tracked and found to take the path of least resistance, following the folds in muscle and running between muscle and bone. Flat nose stays more straight and cuts through tissue more and breaks bone more than running between the muscle and bone.

      @@Gieszkanne arrows =/= bullets Sir. I'm telling you, I've literally seen people get hit with certain projectiles. There is a reason the FBI designed and formulated ballistic gelatin, because the results between it and flesh are comparable when using bullets. Arrows use a completely different method of wounding, that typically being cutting if using something like a boradhead. And arrows are not even exceeding 700 Feet Per Second. Bullets on the other hand can exhibit fragmentation, expansion, tumbling, hydrostatic shock or some combination thereof. There are way too many gel tests, and human body analog tests that exhibit the same wound profiles that we see in real life for it to 'not' be comparable

    In a 45 ACP the Winchester USA Ready 230 grain FMJ flatnose penetrated 2 pieces of plywood and 6 water jugs. I should have used more jugs. The FMJ FN also tracked in a straight line. That flat nose bullet gave amazing penetration compared to a 230 grain Hornady XTP that stopped in the 3rd jug after going through 1 piece of plywood. The XTP is pretty good penetrator because it has controlled and moderate expansion. I share this to say my 45 ACP tests also validate the extreme straight line penetration of a flat nose bullet compared to a HP with a moderate mushroom. We already know from this test that flat nose out penetrates a round nose. However when comparing a flatnose to a moderate mushroom we are seeing twice the penetration. The FMJ FN would be one of the best choices for bear defense without going to hard cast lead bullet. In moist and hard packed reams of paper this same 230 grain flat nose out penetrated the Underwood 255 grain hard cast bullet, likely due to a little smaller flat meplat than the hard cast bullet.

    Maybe Santa will bring you a couple more Gel blocks for Christmas this year! :D I can tell you a 32 wad cutter will go right through 6 water jugs but a 32 round nose stops in about 4 or 5! I know the 147gr 9mm is usually flat nose fmj too, so this is good information because sometimes you might need that penetration esp if a barrier is in the way! Have a good one! 💥✌👍

    I know FMJ is not recommended for self defense but it's better than a pocketknife if that's all you have. I like to keep a box of flat nose FMJ around technically for that purpose, but I got the 9mm 147 grain flatnose hoping penetration would do well and the flatnose would do dome damage if I happened to have to shoot a hog in the woods one day. In the woods I still carry hollow points but still like to have some solids in my pocket too. That's with any caliber too.

    I know this is an older video that I am just getting around to, but I wonder if the RN bullets are tumbling or destabilizing. It just seems odd to me that the FN can displace more tissue and penetrate further unless they are just more stable. I know it isn't unusual to see RN bullets tumble and/or veer off, whereas FN bullets in any caliber are preferred for linear penetration. I can only attribute the better performance in both disruption and penetration from the FN to superior stability.

    It would be interesting to see how the 147g flats preform in comparison with the lower velocities.

      147 grain flat points moving slower probably behave like 230 grain .45. Due to their lower velocity and greater mass, they have a greater opportunity to dump all their energy in the target and not over penetrate.

  • @williambaker1753
    @williambaker1753 10 месяцев назад

    You would think the round nose would penetrate more with the sharp tip. I got the same results when I did the same test a nother thing the flat nose does better is track straighter. I think the pointy nose let's the projectile deflect and swerve around loosing energy and shoot out the side of the block. That's why hard cast projectiles have such a flat nose they penetrate deeper and straighter they don't swerve around vital organs.

    just yesterday i did my own little test. i had an average 115 gr fmj round nose and a federal american eagle 147 gr flat tip fmj, of course both 9mm. i think the flat tip was a little slower than the round nose, but not by much. all i had to shoot in to was a big box of computer paper i got from a dr's office that was remodeling. i was fairly surprised that the 115 gr round nose penetrated a good inch and a half further than the flat tip. but what was even more surprising was how much both fmj bullets were mangled up. i mean, they didnt flatten out like an hp but they certainly changed appearances. as i had mentioned before it would be interesting to see you do some of these penetration tests with a different medium. say stacks of paper or paper plates.

    Another great video! I am wondering, though, I've heard that using fmj rounds for defense is a bad idea (for obvious reasons). "They" say, "You'll kill someone in the next room...", or, "...your next door neighbor...". That being said, have you (or anyone else that you know of) ever chronographed a fmj "pass through" from a 16 inch gel block to see just how fast it's still going? I mean, if it's slowed down to just a few hundred fps, it won't kill a bystander, but it would definitely leave a mark. Just curious is all (Personally, I load out with Federal HST's, but that's just me).

    I’m guessing there’s more drag along the round nose, vs flat nose which may make a cavitation around the front which means less drag? The navy has done similarlwork doing a ‘cavitation’ around a torpedo that increases its speed…
    Based on this, it would be interesting to compare all 3 against each other:
    Round nose vs wadcutter vs semi-wadcutter.

    Great video test. And needed. No matter how hard you try to explain to some folks that the flat nose hard cast ammo is for bear and hog because it does more damage and absolutely penetrates further, they refuse to believe. Seeing the identical round nose stay in the gel while the flat nose blew through and knocked the stump off the table makes it pretty clear. And that’s just little 115 grain 9mm! You may have saved a few skeptics from becoming bear food, lol.
    Nice 700-800 ft lb 10mm flat nose coated hard cast is the way to go for a decent capacity semi auto. It’s no 500 magnum, but my EDC G20 with the Pearce ext is an easy way to carry 18 rounds of 10mm. Plus mag changes are fast. My 500 S&W PC holds 5 shots and even the speed loaders take longer than a mag swap. Granted it is a cannon.

    I understand why the flat nosed bullets penetrated deeper-the flat nosed bullet is more balanced front to back-the round nose is tail heavy. The tail end swings around and slows the bullet down. What's weird to me is that the bullets which penetrated least had the smaller wound channel. Makes me wonder.
