      That is how I judge experts. If they answer question after question accurately, but occasionally say "I don't know" I instantly trust them more than the guy I've never seen say "I don't know." It takes a certain type of person to say they don't know when discussing something they are experts on.

      Now, in 2023, it is not at all difficult to imagine a central AI, that all top field experts report to, allowing all specialty experts to query the AI for perspective on any development in that field. Making what used to be a much, more narrow and very deep understanding of one field, a very deeply learned specialty, with effectively a much, much wider capability of instant access to the very wide expert knowledge base that a central AI could give.
      It might give scientific development a larger advantage, than the internet did for commonplace communication. Rather than countless pages of information that might be incorrect, it could be a quick query, and a simple, but very precise and accurate answer, with the perspective of every top researcher in every field… and then we can apply that to anything else that you can imagine would benefit from central communication.

There is no part of national security with more misinformation and disinformation than in Missiles and Missile Defense, and this has been worsened by the "Hypersonic Death Missile" rhetoric that has grown in recent years. The way you two explain and analyze stuff is amazing. HLC is an Air Defence nerd, that knows what he's talking about and at the same time is humble about what he doesnt know. Great technical explanations and he is a master at ELI5 of super advanced stuff. Maybe thats why he teaches this subject? 😅
    Preston just has some of the best analytic and researching skills on social media. Complete honesty about his own level of knowledge, and very adamant about the importance of critical thinking in the fog of war and shroud of propaganda. Couple this with smooth and calm presentations and brilliant technical deliverance and you've got one of the best "war correspondents" on social media, even tho he does it from the comfort of his own home. • @mitotakjde9763
      @mitotakjde9763 Год назад +2

      I thought about it many times and what i thought of is nightmarish..
      I imagined swarms of miniature, few centimeter long drones carrying a tiny explosive charges that would autonomously fly over the battlefield and search for enemy soldiers. When they locate them, they would do a kamikaze attacks on them, detonating the small charge. 1 drone would have enough explosives to kill 1 soldier.
      Imagine swarms of those drones flying over the battlefield, sharing data to other drones and when there would be more soldiers than drones, more would fly to that location. If armoured vehicles were present, the small ones would observe them and call bigger drones for that.
      If this will actually happen, then all i can say is RIP...
      To me that sounds million times more scary than anything else. Even tactical nukes on battlefield are less scary than those swarms to me. Lets hope that these things will not be made, or that they will ban them. Or i at least hope that this is a stupid idea i came up with and that it would be too expensive to make, to be worth it.
      Have you also came up with some nightmarish future weapon? Would love to hear what is the scariest thing you heard/can imagine 😄

    I still think the systems similar to Gepard/Shlika with more modern radar is a simple solution for the drone’s . Combine them with electronic defense and you can clean a area. Counter to it will be artillery…

    • @williamzk9083
      @williamzk9083 Год назад +2

      I think the only system being developed is the Rheinemetal SkyNEX system based around a similar rotating breech guns as used on the Gepard (cheetah). This will be a single barrel turret but because the ROF is doubled to 1100 RPM there is no loss in fire power. The Radars on this system are tiny and clearly millimeter wave radar so are designed to be able to deal with swarming drones. Obviously needs the right software too. Ukraine just ordered two of these for 180 million. Don't worry the money is from Germany, given to Ukraine. This is obviously R&D prototype order. The guns can obviously deal with cruise missiles, shahad style drones but critical will be the ability to also deal with also tiny smaller drones. Hensoldt (the makers of the TRML/4D radar used for IRIS-T) have a business with drone detection radar for sporting venues and stadiums so should be in their capability.
      -The issue with 35mm systems is that they just don't have the range to deal with aircraft or helicopters able to fire anti tanke missiles with 10--15km range.
      -One way arund thos may be guided ammuntion such as MAD-FIRES.
      -I suspect SPAAGS with 50. 57 even 76.2mm guns will provide the range needed.

    The anti-drone question is interesting and I see it going 3 ways:
    1) Lasers (like the Iron Beam you mentioned) are extremely effective in the short range, but lasers are only effective within a certain distance before the atmosphere renders them ineffective
    2) Electronic countermeasures could be a really powerful tool against drones. Using EM waves to disrupt them is effective, but requires more development; the same goes for hacking drones, taking control over them or crashing them.
    3) Counter-drones are a great option, but likely the most technologically complicated. If the enemy is running drones in a battlefield, you can run your own drone-hunting drones to take them out with either a short-range explosive charge, or even potentially a shotgun blast. This requires the development of drones that are fast enough to intercept enemy drones, with radar systems that can reliably locate small drones to be marked for destruction.

      1st and 2nd are the only real practical options, especially the first. EW is phenomenal against quadcopters but once you’re dealing with something autonomous, unless you have EW that will literally fry circuit boards you can’t do anything. DEWs (lasers mostly) are just a phenomenal anti-drone weapon period. Zero cost, high reliability, few moving parts. Short range doesn’t really matter with drones of the kind being discussed, they’re slow. 15-20 miles is more than enough.
      But anti-drone drones is just a needlessly complicated solution looking for a problem. You don’t need to hunt down and kill these kinds of drones, they come to you.

      @@jonathanpfeffer3716 I agree that it is the least developed of the three ideas, but there are a number of nations looking into it. As far as I know, only the US Fortem Technologies has a functional drone for this purpose, but I expect some more to spring up in the future (largely as an outgrowth of domestic law enforcement needing way to take down drones).
      Also, one of the main threats assessed for the US large drone models is loitering munitions which can outspeed them and intercept them in the air. For example modified Shahed drones could be a real issue for Reapers, as they are cheap and could knock one out with a proximity airburst if they got close enough. And, as they are manually guided, most of the anti-missile countermeasures would be ineffective.
      One weird permutation of this, that could be absolutely terrifying or too technologically complicated, is a rumored test by the IAF. They have tested aerial deploying drones that take up a weapon mount on a jet--in case of a dogfight, one or more drones would drop off the jet and engage the enemy independently. It's ironically similar to the US WWII era XF-85 Goblin, but with a UAV.

      @@theprogressivecynic2407 You know, use of drones against aerial targets is a really really interesting application that I’ve really never even heard of or considered before, thanks for bringing that to light.
      That seems like it could be a very serious threat against rotary wing aviation and drones. I wouldn’t be too worried about it when it comes to fixed wing aviation, aircraft like that move to fast to be engaged by anything but a rocket powered drone, aka a missile.
      The same solutions could work, DEWs on aircraft are possible but they come with a a lot of compromises and requirements and probably wouldn’t be possible on basically every rotary wing/drone platform in the USAF.
      You would need to develop a lot of accompanying technology to make that work, like a robust AI image matching system to make passive detection work well and some really fancy algorithms to make reengagement possible but that idea is one that I legitimately can’t think of a good counter to other than eliminating launchers before they fire or just not using rotary wing aviation or drones in areas not protected by combat air patrols or SAM sites. I guess the lynchpin of whether anti-air drones would work is unit cost, they would be much more expensive than a Shahed. If they were in relatively small-medium quantities than you could just treat them like a SAM or fighter and they wouldn’t be particularly dangerous, but if they could be made to exist in large enough quantities to achieve saturation AND be distributed across wide fronts that would be a weapon to be feared.
