Restoration of a rusty Breitling Colt Ocean automatic watch - water damaged Breitling B17 service

- This time I´m restoring a Breitling Colt Ocean Automatic Watch.
It´s powered by the Breitling B17, a modified ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. It beats at 28800bph, the lift angle of the balance is at 52° and it has a power reserve of 42 hours. The reference number of this watch is A17350 and it´s chronometer-certified.
This watch is water resistant up to 500 meters (1650 feet)... well ... at least you are able to lock-down the crown. The previous owner of the watch didn´t lock the crown before this watch had it´s last diving session. Water has penetrated the watch, the watch stoppped from running and it has been thrown in the most behind drawer. Bad idea.... of course this watch has gained a lot of rust over several months until it find it´s way on my desk.
I need to clean everything and remove the rust where it´s possible. I´ve never used a rust-remover on a watch movement ... until now. Some parts of the movement needs to be replaced. I also replaced the glass, re-painted the bezel and polished everything where it´s needed.
After everything is cleaned, polished and re-painted, I can re-assemble the movement with some fresh oil. After that, this watch is in a fantastic beat (+0 seconds per day) again.

@@Mark-sd7fc He only resotored easy movements so far. He sticks the lever in Rodico and lubricates the entry and the exit pallet. You dont do this like that at all. Speaking of lubrication: He lubricates the movement like someone who read the assembly drawing and knows where to put lubricant (in theory), but did not learn how to lubricate a watch properly. He mostly uses tools, machinery and substances that you can buy on ebay or in your local hardware store, while most watchmakers buy their stuff from specialist dealers (you can easily spot those things if you know how those things look). He uses a dremel-tool to polish. Watchmakers are using polishing lathes because its quicker and more evenly. He changes the finish on some parts like the bezel from matted to glossy. You just dont do that. Sure, it wont hurt the watch in terms of function, but you just dont do it. Especially when its a old watch. One really bad thing was when he pressed the hands back on, using a assembly pad as an underlay. Beause that can really destroy the balance wheel pivots. But luckily the changed that. There are some more hints but i think thats enough. He seemes like he started it as a hobby and reads himself into the topic. Which is completley fine for me, dont get me wrong. Heck, id even like to give him some advice if he needs any. The only thing thats bugging me is the praise he gets in the comments (he can do nothing about that, im aware of that). I know it looks really complicated to restore a watch and most people dont have any knowledge on this topic. But seeing that is called masterfully, while being a actual master watchmaker, just upset me a little.
I see that he makes progress and I hope he wont stagnate, but he still got things to learn.
@@Ravel146 You are right, in the past I lubricated the exit and the entry pallet. But as you can see in the videos I've changed that because someone pointed me on that mistake. What's wrong with buying tools on eBay instead of expensive specialist tools? They are doing the job. Pretty well in my opinion. Polishing with a dremel or lathe: I think this is something of a personal preference. At the end both tools just turn around a cotton piece with some polishing compound. In my opinion those small dremel-swabs are giving me more control of where I polish. Bezel from matted to glossy? I've taped the bezel to protect it and only used some nevr dull. That's more a cleaning than a polishing. The surface is untouched. But maybe you are referring to the first Breitling video. Hand-Setting on the cushion case, yes that was bad, I need to get the proper movement holders for all those movements.
I'm always thankful to any advice and feedback. I'm just a hobbiest and I have still much to learn for sure 😉

The ultrasonic parts watching the dirt and rust removed has to be one of the highlights of each video. Thanks for the great videos. Having an apprenticeship when I was in high school working on watches, seeing this brings me a lot of joy.
I own a Breitling and watching this guy remove all those parts from the movement made me nervous. He’s a true master at his craft.
I agree. I have a Breitling Super Avenger that my wife says can be seen from the Moon! Had no idea how many tiny parts are inside. Probably be a bit more gentle with it.

I have a mid 90s Breitling Cronomat, one of my most priced possessions. I recently had it back at the factory for a complete overhaul. It cost a small fortune but was worth every cent.

I'd like to add that I've owned my Breitling Colt Ocean automatic since 2001 and I've worn it almost everyday. I haven't babied the watch at all. I swim with it and play water sports with it on. Two years ago I had it serviced for the first time. It still ran like new but I was concerned about the age of the seals. I was told that they degrade with time. After returning it to me the watchmaker remarked that the condition of the movement was really good considering that the watch was 20 years old.
I don't know how the watch in this video became so rusty. I can only assume that as some point it was submerged with out having the crown screwed down. Either that or it was improperly serviced at some point.

How can there be people giving a thumbs down? This guy always does a FANTASTIC job restoring old watches.
For once, this watch has a very basic third party movement - ETA 2824-2, which could be bought seperately for around $200 instead of investing so much time and effort into restoring it.

@@trollse8714 You make a valid point, however if it were my personal watch I would definitely want original movement restored. Besides nostalgic reasons of keeping watch as original as possible, the $200 replacement you mentioned does not have beautiful circular graining or Breitling winding rotor.
Philosophically we as humans have been finding it way too easy to throw things away. Part of the charm of a mechanical watch is that if taken care of can last generations. The rust spots left behind are just part of this watches journey.
As far as the video, basic 3rd party movements can be interesting as you can see where manufacturer spent $$, and where they needed to be thrifty. The whole video: the movement, case and bracelet restoration were fascinating to me, sorry it wasn't the same for you.
I'm only 1 minute in and I'm finding this watch stunning. Can't imagine how it will look in 20 minutes. What a beauty.

The skill and patience level in the restoration are beyond words! As for the pathetic condition of the watch inflicted, I only have one thing to say: The owner does NOT deserve a Breitling watch.

I don't blame him for not working on customer's watches. Dealing with customers and unreasonable time deadlines would take the fun out of the hobby.
@@scdevon well I would find it hard to imagine customers demanding they need a watch repairing on a timeline due to an event? I think we can live without watches. I guess this is an excel use in making money another way. Nice to watch but once you seen one or two, you seen most right.
@@jonathanfitzwater6517 - Customers are (sometimes) impossible to please for lots of other reasons besides time deadline expectations. Again, I don't blame this guy one bit for not accepting any paying work.

I have an A64050 Colt Ocean. She's 28 years old. She runs and looks like new. Personally I prefer my model design over this 7-year newer model. I reckon the previous owner lived his life to it's fullest :) Loved your video. I found it intriguing to better understand the workings of something I actually own. Thank you sharing your talent.

Incredible... I found someone selling this same watch in used state, and I was a bit concerned about some minor scratches... and also about the fading paint of the numbers. Then I saw this video, and I realised that I should really calm down and don't worry ! It's true that I can't do this same authentic job like you do, but for the scratches and painting I'll search those same products you use ! Thanks !

@@emonez1860 yeah a battery operated breitling maybe. The mechanical movement in the watch is a 2824-2 which is found in many swiss manufacturers (TAG. ORIS. RAYMOND WEIL ETC) decent movement but not what you would get if accuracy was your sole reason for purchase
@@stevenrothwell3824 Own a Sinn 103 Ti TESTAF what is actually officially certified as an aircraft instrument. Movement is a mass produced ETA Valjoux 7750 slightly improved. Nothing wrong with that. Military demands a very basic Lemania 5100. Have it in a lot of military watches , one of them with a 18 kt gold case ...
@@stevenrothwell3824 A top grade ETA 2824 movement with chronometer certification is extremely accurate, just as in house movements by companies like Rolex are.
It amazes me there are people that give the videos a thumbs down. If you don't like watch makers why even bother? Very relaxing watching a guy who likes his work.

This shows that when the movement is of a good quality, it can be repaired no mater the state.
Good old ETA (Eternamatic) movements are, in my opinion, the best movements.
I've never seen anyone remove the balance pivot jewel at the beginning of disassembly and then replace it at the end. I'm not good enough to not lose that. Props to you.
There's just something especially right about the double blue coating on the original crystal. The way it reduces so much reflection and makes the crystal almost disappear is what I think should be there. For all of the wear and rust you removed, very good work. 👏👏👏👍🏻

Watched ALL your videos. It's mesmerizing! And for me looks like some kind of magic. All the words about your outstanding skills and craftsmanship are already said in other comments, there is nothing to add. Only that I take my hat off in admiration.
I also wish that there was such a great master in Kiev, Ukraine, where I live. I have a Breitling watch - a present from my late mother, a very dear memory - and I can not service them properly here. There is a "certified service" for Swiss-made watch here, but... They charged awesome money for cervicing and afterwards the watch functioned wose than before: the self-winding lasts for less than one day (I have to wind the watch manually every fucking morning!), the watch is slow for 3-4 minutes per week etc, Man, why don't you live in Kiev!

Who let their Breitling get that bad? Have to appreciate a good watch. You are a true craftsman and now it's as good if not better than new. I'd be proud to wear it but I'm a die hard Omega guy.

That's actually a really nice-looking movement. It just took a good cleaning to see it. I've never been a huge Breitling fan (personal preference), but they do make some cool watches.

Lovely editing! May I suggest a grease for the crown wheel post? Oil just doesn't provide necessary longevity and it'll wear out quickly.
I might also add for him to lubricate the reversers next time to prevent failure of the automatic winding system
