once the chalk pastels are baked onto the clay it wont come off, unless you used too much pastel then there might be some excess that rubs off. if you are really that worried about it you can probably get some matte finishing spray then glaze the tomatoes and everything else that needs to be "shiny".
You can do whatever you want. The only problem is how it dries. Test it out and see if you like it. I would try a different air dry clay. Sculpey is a very good brand to use. They make oven bake clay and air dry. I hope this helps! :)

For bread, I fin fit easier to darken the crust using pastels as opposed to dark clay around the edge.
