I wish we'd had a decent athletics coach when I was a kid - we were left to assume that the best athletes were just "naturals," rather than focusing on developing the technique of all students.
Ya it’s kind of sad, I think if all schools had quality pe coaches not only would more people be healthy but they would enjoy doing physical activity more
I had the same thing for rugby. Wish I had a coach. They invited me up for 1st team practice and it was full of my bullies and literally none of my extended friendship group. I had no idea about rules and my confidence was really low at the time.
As an athlete who went through the same system, most physED teachers don’t have a clue. The teachers would use me as the example for everything. For wrestling and track they just allowed me to teach instead, otherwise I’d be correcting them too much.
@nikkcarroll9382 Is it bad if I only run barefoot? I just do it as a pastime, and I don't mind being slower because of it. Am I more prone to injuries and shin splints?
The easiest way to train yourself for this type of foot strike is to remember that running is not a pulling motion; it’s a controlled fall, so the lean forward is what’s important in making sure you’re “controlled falling”.
it can be due to many things, including bad form but also bad shoes, awkward ground, and heavy upper body. i would suggest getting a good pair of running shoes fitted at a store if you get shin splints often
@@michaeldeierhoi4096 Michael Johnson’s running form, and Usain Bolt for that matter, are perfect examples of the pose running method. (Lean and fall). You just have to watch it in slow motion to see it.
For me running in Barefoot shoes really fixed my form, since they force you to run in a more natural manner (shorter steps and no heel strike). I did not have any (running related) injuries ever since I bought them.
Omggg just her saying “under and not in front”, made everything CRYSTAL CLEAR!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 that’s the difference between this short and the other long videos explaining the forward lean. Great video ❤
Please , please keep doing videos like this. I love running but my my technique is horrible and is causing shin splints and foot pain from poor technique. I'm really working on better form so I can enjoy running again.
@@visceraeyes525 One of your legs is pushing forward, your other leg lands below and then pushes. Then you keep repeating. I don't run anymore but back in HS I had decently good PR's.
I think this is exactly what is causing my nagging 'injuries.' Every time I increase my mileage I'm getting VERY sore hips & legs and I've actually tried to focus on this exact form because I thought it might be helpful - I didn't know it was called a negative foot strike but something told me I needed to start doing this to avoid pain.
THIS ADVICE HAS DEFINITELY HELPED ME. MY GOD, I AM SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS VIDEO. THIS IS DEFINITELY GOLD. I USED TO SUFFER FROM INJURIES AND LOSING STAMINA QUICKLY, NOW I CAN RUN MORE WITH LESS OR NO INJURIES AND BETTER STAMINA.
💯 when I don't do the negative foot strike I have a tendency to stumble because my feet get tired. When I go long distances my legs get tired and we can shuffle our feet when that happens. Doing it properly prevents that. Thank you for sharing that
Wow thank you so much, I ran today for like 5 mins. My legs were not feeling right, some parts just feels overstretched, i knew i wasnt doing something right. Thanks for this video, you probably just saved me tons of future injuries.😅
I want you as my personal coach, personal everyday trainer and generally all things personal, the more personal the better. I ve been hating running and you are changing it for sure
Oh my God... Thanks a ton, man... You really the one who'll made someone's life change. Thank you so much, you really have no idea what you just did to me... I thank universe to making me see this video... thank you universe
No way! I've been running for 20 years (non competive) just because i love it and I've honestly never looked into my form and I just tried this on my run today and...no words...I felt incredible. I do feel it in my low back a bit and had no muscle fatigue in my large muscle groups so not sure if I did it right, but my energy levels were so strong the entire 45 min run today. I haven't felt that great on a run in so long.
Up until know I never learnt so much about running until this video showed up (shorts are good to promote channels, especially for those who are impatient and are unable to handle videos longer than 10 minutes in duration). Plans are not in place to start jogging for a while. Cheers for creating the short 🎉 Will watch the full videos at a later time.
omg i’ve never been taught the proper way to run so all throughout middle school to high school pe i’ve been really slow, and i’m so much pain at my shins. i really want to be able to run. but everytime i tried it hurt so bad. im praying this will fix it, thank you miss!
Wow I never knew this! No wonder my hips always get pain when I run. I stopped running for cardio and began doing less impact for joint pain and muscle building…I may get back into this whole “jogging” thing again
no, everyone has different running forms that are efficient for their specific body type. the more you try to force yourself into a different running form the more likely you are to get injured and get muscle fatigue
So much changes. When I was a kid 40 years ago, I naturally took shorter strides during my sprints. My my HS track coach enforced taking the longest stride.
Agreed totally look at kipchoge. However, there are plenty of world-class athletes that run with an over extended leg. It's just natural running mechanics
My track coach in HS taught us to hold our inside arm out on a wall. Raise the innermost knee. Raise your outside arm in running form. We'd then do the same drill she's doing in place by striking and moving our arm in sprinting form. This drill helps a lot. It also helped those with poor coordination to correct themselves.
@@gauribansal6708 nice! I haven’t been too consistent 2 times per week 2 miles each time. My time is going down slowly but having a hard time not heel striking.
@@anthonyfletcher8053 Oh I see, perhaps, you can focus on your form for 2 weeks, and afterwards, on the consistency in terms of frequency and distance, Coz only correct form will help in good results without any injury.
As a young person who’s just taken up running thank you so much I’ve been trying cross country and my knees and shins always hurt after I’ll definitely try this tomorrow
I used to go running every day in my 20s but had nearly 3 decades of not doing it. I've spent the last 6 months trying to get back into it but my shins feel like they're going to snap after half a mile. The tibialis muscle cramps up so painfully. Cardio not a limitation at all. Just can't seem to get past the shin pains. I have to learn how to run again as I miss having the ability to run freely for miles.
Running on the balls of the feet, mid foot, a good way to strengthen the arch muscle of the feet and glutes which are a more dominant shock absorber when running, leading to less energy usage and more efficiency.
No gym teacher ever taught me this. I was always a relatively slow runner and never knew what i could really do to improve anything other than just “run more”. I’m still a slow runner considering I’m in shape and athletic
I wish we'd had a decent athletics coach when I was a kid - we were left to assume that the best athletes were just "naturals," rather than focusing on developing the technique of all students.

Same. Was a heel striker for over 18 years
Issue is theirs 1 or two coaches for every 500 kids. Plus anyone worth a lick in athletics is not gunna stick around on a teachers salary.
I felt this! I’ve had success playing several sports but never had a coach or teacher explain techniques and form. That would’ve been more enjoyable.
I had the same thing for rugby. Wish I had a coach. They invited me up for 1st team practice and it was full of my bullies and literally none of my extended friendship group. I had no idea about rules and my confidence was really low at the time.
12 years of physical education in school and they never even taught us how to run correctly. I had to learn this stuff at 30 years of age
