I think the big question is whether it will be a 2d or 3d platformer. As much as I love Tropical Freeze, the easiest way to clearly communicate a brand new game would definitely be 3d imo. But I'll take any DK game, it feels like Nintendo is building up to something for sure. And I hope it's not just an Illumination DK movie...

Nintendo will absolutely capitalise on the huge success of the Mario movie, as well as their partnership with Universal. Therefore, the five stars (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and Donkey Kong) will get a considerable amount of exposure throughout the 2020s. We'll get a new 3D Mario game, a Donkey Kong Country title, Luigi's Mansion 4, a new Peach game and a Captain Toad sequel. We already saw this last year with the announcements of Super Mario Bros Wonder, Princess Peach Showtime and the remakes for Mario vs Donkey Kong and Luigi's Mansion 2. In fact, considering the fact that Charlie Day and Seth Rogan coincidentally expressed their interest for spin-off movies about Luigi and Donkey Kong respectively, it's not too far-fetched to say that part of the Nintendo-Universal deal included a Luigi movie and a DK movie alongside a Mario trilogy. Donkey Kong getting his own section of Super Nintendo World is telling. If a Luigi themed ghost train is built, that's all the evidence you need. Any Nintendo movie stars will get a special treatment going forward.

There is one concerning idea to me - dual branding. I’m worried Nintendo is trying to make DK a “Mario” character again. DK was teamed up with Mario in the movie. The Lego DK set goes hand in hand with the Mario one. Mario VS Donkey Kong remake And the park expansion plays into it. The two IP’s always seemed paired together recently. It’s probably a nonsensical worry, and DK will probably get another original game eventually (especially considering all of the new branding is heavily DKC focused) but I just can’t help but wonder.
I don’t think it’s nonsensical at all. It’s a concern I’ve had for a while. Most DK fans brush this off as buildup for a DK comeback, but it really seems like they’re just slowly dropping DK as a franchise and just integrating more major elements into the Mario series.

From what we’ve heard on the banana vine, Vicarious Visions had been working on a Donkey Kong platformer for Switch before the project was cut. DK Vine have covered the topic in a few of their Kongversation podcasts, so the gap in DK releases partly happened because of a game that just never happened. As for the evidence provided, I do think Donkey Kong is being built back up. The park, the movie, the Lego set, Mario vs Donkey Kong… a lot of stuff is putting DK back in the spotlight, so it’s a matter of when for the next game. I could see the next DK needing to wait for year 2 of the next Switch iteration, assuming the next console is one. But I think DK’s next game is an in house 3D affair, considering the rumored DK game by the Odyssey development team and the canceled Vicarious Visions game was meant to be 3D, as I understand.
I hope they bring Snowmads back, honestly. The concept of viking artic animals is more fun than military reptiles, and i think has more potential for character design. You just need to develop Lord Friedrik to stand out on his own with more personality, because he's a bit too much of a K Rool 2
