What do Runescape, Team Fortress 2, Eve Online and CS:GO all have in common?
If you said Trading then you hit the nail on the head.
Trading is, for better or worse, a core part of these games. And in-game economies can be scarily similar to economies in the real world. From inflation, to gambling, To full time workers and gold farmers, to taxes, to warfare, with their own legal tender to spend on these things...
Trading in videogames is worth real world money, and when real money is on the line, people will do anything... - Игры
Tf2’s economy is so special someone made a fucking Ted talk on it
can you provide a link
@@domacihlebac5739 look up tf2 Ted talk
1 key for 5 ref back in the day? Oh you sweet summer child, I remember when it was 3 ref
damn i only remember when they were 37.33ref
@BradynLee09 ohhhh man, you missed the golden years. But, thanks for playing right now.
@Hat Lock Productions 2.33 was the stable price for keys back in the day, it rarely deviated
I remember when 1 key was 3.33 ref and we used Earbuds (~20 keys) and Bill's hats (~6 keys) as currencies and we all traded on tf2outpost.
I was 14 but felt like a grown man handling my money and all. Good times man, good times.
well that got depressing as hell
As a Venezuelan myself i can tell you this hits close to home
It's real sad to know your situation. It's just holding yourself until things get better. When will that day come? We don't know, but i wish you the best of luck.
@@damsen978 i'm actually lucky in that regard, i don't have to struggle thanks to my family being relatively middle class (i don't think you can use that word here, as a middle class still has to manage the food they consume and struggle with their salary) but i have seen enough people having a bad time (including me during the heat of the crisis). Also it's hard to actually measure how bad is the current situation, as the minimum wage has increased to 20 dolars and there's people saying that "Venezuela has been fixed" while you can see that the income is around a third of other countries and the prices are 1.5 times higher (even higher for some products)
Oh hey i'm from Venezuela too and God
It's frightening how things only become more expensive as the days pass by
I don't know if i Will get out of here when i get My title but i hope i Will get a better place to live
Same, I just came back after over 3 years for the new year and things have really changed with the country getting dolarized, I'm stuck here now because of legal crap but I'll be back to the country I live in soon.
I remember hearing the story of the kid that played runescape almost all day every day to try and feed his family and my mom thought it would be a good idea for me to do the same because I liked video games, she probably didn't know that the money you get from this isn't worth it for how time consuming it is and just heard getting money by playing video games and thought it was a lot better, so I don't blame her.
Also for anyone from the outside wondering, when I arrived the dollar was at 17 bolivares, now it's at more than 23 last time I checked
yet another banger vid about something i didn't have any interest/knowledge in about 20 minutes ago. hell yeah dude! :D
Dont you love that tax evasion(in minecraft)
Wait what?
I know it's not the main topic of this video, but thanks for talking about venezuela and shedding light on the horrible economic issues going on right now, I'm one of the lucky ones that never suffered too much with starvation, went to a private school my whole life, and eventually managed to leave my country altogether, but it still pains me that venezuela is in such a horrible position,
I knew a whole family that lived in a small fishing town called barrio de los pescadores in anzoategui, and I don't remember much about it, but I do remember seeing that they lived in makeshift houses made from rusty metal plates and old, rotten wood, they were like 7 or 8 in the whole family, and they could barely eat once a day.
I also remember this time when I went to a pizzeria with my mom and sister and we didn't eat the whole thing so I had the rest in a paper bag, and while my mom was paying 3 kids ran up to me and my sister and begged us to share some of the leftovers, we of course did,I remember that the kids were a boy and a girl of about 11 years old, and a little 6 year old boy. My memory's very fuzzy though, so this might be wrong. I was about 12 and my sister was 14 at the time, so we were nearly the same age. Looking back on it now, I still think about them, and considering that their parents were nowhere, I don't think that they are alive today sadly..
This is real, and it's just getting worse as time goes on.. God fucking damn it
Also, at 16:51 you mention that venezuela's economy was doing great until the oil prices crashed at around 2017, this is not the case, it got a lot worse from that moment on but this has been an issue since before I was even born, since 1999
Incredible, well researched and edited video, spans some really diverse games and topics and ideas. Always quality content from you H2 :)
When you have your viral breakthrough. You will become one of the biggest lore/game explanation youtubers. I can feel it. Your research and editing is great.
Excellent video man. This is such an rich and complex topic and you did really well to explain it in a digestible way for people who may be unfamiliar with the concept. I've traded on and off in TF2 for the better part of a decade, and it has provided me with an an endlessly valuable case study that parallels the real world, and has taught me so many important lessons along the way. Keep up the good content :)
I didn't need a Venezuela history lesson today. Now I am sad and can't tell if I can sleep right now.
worth pointing out that TF2 was so ahead of the curve that almost nobody in the trading community calls their lootboxes, well "lootboxes" they call them crates even though there hasnt been an actual "crate" dropped in years it's all been cases because lootboxes werent even a concept back then
also worth noting that refs sometimes go up in value seemingly at random due to bots with massive amounts of refs getting banned thus reducing supply or sometimes for reasons nobody is quite certain of, the key is currently at 46 refs, which means it dropped by around 45%ish percent from it's highest value
Fantastic use of the resi 7 sound track near the end there
Amazing video. It just hit 5k views, but it's so well made that it will certainly surprass those numbers.
Sinks should especially be highlighted, like this enough scrap metal to make a unusualfier, strangifiers for things that are basically out of the question for normal people to get, like Strange Kritzkriegs. Scrap could be used to bring back out of season items.
*Uses ULTRAKILL music while talking about TF2*
A man of culture I see.
Even though Im well versed on the whole topic of the video, I was thoroughly enjoying every minute of it and can only commend the production value. That EVE Online segment was especially interesting. Really dig the stuff you make
Diablo 2 also has a small economy but the currencies are rings, Stone of jordans. Picked as one due to rarity for sure. Wish it was gold because that'd be more fitting, just like OSRS does.
when the fire is gone
Wow. I thought I was just gonna get a primer on virtual economies, but I got an explanation on how the mere existence of training in video games creates jobs all over the world. I'm stunned
Trading* yeah I'm in shock
I've played all 3 games and interacted with each of the 3 games and by far my favorite has to be EVE's economy (mainly because i've played EVE long enough to know which items are good and which items are bad)
Really underrated video, I have like 30$ worth of skins on my rocket league account and I havent bought any credits, my friends are just amazed at how lucky I am with these lootboxes.
Rocket league is a game with a huge trading economy and it is literally car soccer. Also everything is cosmetic. There are cases of the game giving good reasons to get rid of your credits tho like when they put a 100$ item in the item shop for 10$
i feel like watching to a youtube channel with a 1 million subscribers, love the video!
15:33 but you can automate gold farming
its very easy to set up an neural network in python, kinda "record" yourself doing the task, the neural network learns from it and can do it automatically. You can then set up hundreds of accounts and make a lot of money AFK.
atleast thats how i did it in another game, but i would imagine that it is possible here aswell
How much money with that method would be? Lets say: 1 hour, 100 accounts
You always have something interesting to say h2
I joined back when keys were 8 refined metal each, I thought they were high then!
Thought I would learn about TF2 keys, learned about the Venezuelan economic crisis
Since the world economy is barreling towards total economic collapse, because of inflation, Think it's important to note that they don't have to "print" anything anymore.
A few key strokes on the computer can make money come from nothing.
I love the skating over the socialism subject when talking about Venezuela. The oil production was socialize. The government took the oil production away from the private owners, this is what caused the devaluation
Dude, I love your voice
16:46 That is sad, grinding a game for 15 hours a day to support yourself... I never heard about venezuela's inflation before and that is very sad.
Holy crap coming into this video I didn't know what to expect, atleast you mentioned eve's market... :////, inflating is more like it. Especially for plex
I wish valve added a currency system so you can buy weapons with the points you’ve earned and not get weapons thru chances
I don't thing this is good idea, it would encourage addiction
@@nome1910 not really, tons of other games work that way
@@goto228i Another games having this mechanic doesn't exclude the fact of it encouraging addction
Almost forgot that he was talking about a game when he was talking about eve online
What is your outro music? Sounds familiar
the raindrop that fell to the sky - risk of rain 2 ost
I like tf2 and I like osrs :) good vid
i mean yeah, the supposed minimum wage where i live its less than 200 dollars, so making dollars its really enticing to anyone, because winning 10 dollars in a game might be little to most european or english speaking countries, but here its a lot
Interesting
Ultrakill music
17:46 why do spanish countries keep being in hell after spain died/left?...
can't wait to cash out my tempus points
Hahaha unfortunately tempus points still aren't worth shit on the market. You have no idea what Gorge is keeping from us
I wonder more quantity means more quantity = cheaper
Low quantity = expensive
Then what if someone begins to trade all the 0.55 scrap weapons and turn into scraps? Would people begin to sell and buy weapons for scraps since theres no more bots selling those? Person who does that doesnt lose money but tine
I have an idea
Civilian grade stat click upgrades
Civ>freelance 1 clock 10ref
Freelance>mercenary 3 clocks 50 ref
Mercenary>commando 5 clocks 100ref
Commando>assassin 10 clocks 500 ref
Assassin>elite 50 clocks no ref
So going with this exponential growth
1 elite grade would cost a metric shit ton
A fair trade to make any non strange skin strange
This would also allow users to make tf2's white whale
The strange factory new top shelf minigun
And to avoid inflating the unusual market
Unusual skins cannot gain benefits of the statclocks
Anyone want to do the math?
Because it's a LOT of metal
And clocks
Civ>freelance>mercenary>commando>assassin>elite
0-3-5-10-50
10ref-50ref-100ref-500ref-0ref
Compounded growth to make higher grades more expensive
Good idea but never gonna happen. Mr Valve abandoned game
Bread box tho
ah yes the hypixel skyblock coin
2:19 of course you Brit’s think your money is better 2:30 the u.s dollar is real money
