- Bio CNG technology can deal with air pollution at 3 levels by curtailing methane emissions, warding off waste burning and phasing out fossil fuel-powered vehicles. Bio CNG, also known as Compressed Biogas (CBG), is an upgraded version of the humble biogas compressed at high pressure in cylinders which is similar in chemical properties to CNG derived from petroleum sources. This is then sent off to filling stations to be used as fuel in vehicles. But despite economic and environmental promises, this industry is slow to pick up. Let us understand why, by studying the challenges faced by Asia’s largest Bio-CNG plant based on municipal solid waste/garbage (the biggest otherwise is in Punjab) in India’s cleanest city, Indore.
This is Devguradiya, earlier known as Indore’s dumping ground for almost 70 years. The particulate matter pollution was visibly high in the area not to forget the foul odour caused due to hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and ammonia. Although the trenching ground was replaced by a city forest and the Gobar Dhan Bio CNG plant. the putrefying odour of garbage still marks the area.
Gobar Dhan plant, built on 15 acres of land with an investment of Rs 150 crores, processes 550 tons of the 700 tons per day (TPD) of biodegradable waste in the city. The plant proposes to improve the city’s air quality by mitigating 130,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Gobar Dhan plant was set up by the Indore Municipal corporation (IMC) in partnership with the private company Ever Enviro Resource Management Pvt Ltd. IMC is supposed to supply 90% segregated waste to the plant for which the company has to pay them an annual royalty of Rs 2.5 crores. The Corporation buys bio-CNG from the plant at a rate that is Rs 5 less than the market price of CNG and uses it as a fuel to run its 146 buses. The Indore Municipal Corporation has already earned Rs 8.5 crores in carbon credits by replacing diesel buses with CNG. Also, half the gas produced is sold to Avantika Gas Ltd, the CNG and PNG supplier of the Indore region, at Rs 56/kg.
Besides bio-CNG, the plant generates 15 tons of carbon dioxide and 100 tons of organic manure as byproducts. While bottling of carbon dioxide for industrial use is still in the pipeline, the company sells their manure at a net rate of Rs 1,800 per ton. There is a plan to inject the compressed biogas produced in Gobar Dhan into Avantika’s city gas distribution network via a pipeline. This will not only cut gas compression costs but also reduce emissions through transportation and the 163 industries in the city
Gobar Dhan has its own share of challenges as it implements a technology that is still nascent in India. Indore is a pioneer in this technology and will have only its own experiences to learn from.

Down to Earth is Science and Environment fortnightly published by the Society for Environmental Communication, New Delhi. We publish news and analysis on issues that deal with sustainable development, which we scan through the eyes of science and environment.
The kind of forward-thinking Indore have in regard to cleanliness, waste managment and sanitization is really compendable. It almost give sense of any european city or american city.
Kudos to Indore Municipal Corporation, these guys are the real heros.
Few American cities not all .
Indories have basic sense of segregating waste into dry and wet waste. Which makes it even more easier for municipal corporation to implement such technology. This civic sense lacks in even the metro cities of our country. Kudos from a gujarat. We need to learn from you. 🙌💯
Indore is City of Devi Ahilya bai holkar, She has re-build all the major temple across Bharat including today's Kashi Vishwanath temple. People of indore consider her as Lokmata and all the her Punya karma are inspiration of common people of Indore. Somewhere we take great pride in her legacy and want to re-establish her legacy. This is one of the main reason why Indore is one 1 clean city for 6 years. There is no city in india which even come close to Indore. We segregate almost 100% wet waste. which make this technology viable. Even if there is small plastic wrapper in our wet waste, then wet collection person will ask us to remove.
Even if we segregate the waste... The municipality sends the same vehicle to pickup the waste into single truck.... I myself segregate waste it... But what the government does is also important.....
🎉
Few years back, Indore also lacked the basic civic sense, just like any other place in India. It is just that political will and public awareness and participation has made it possible now.
Kudos to all the people who envisaged Gobar-Dhan venture and making it successful.
Thank you for sharing such useful info.
This initiative is example for all other municipal corporations in India. Mitigating waste dumping land problem in of prime importance in Indian society becuase of ever increasing waste from metropolitian cities.
Mumbai, Pune and PCMC these corporations can easily afford this plant(even for experimentation pourpose).
Hope all other munciple corporations takes inspiration from this exmaple.
Thank to Down To Erth for making this video.
This is really amazing to see such plants running in India.
Gobar Dhan Bio Gas plants needs to open its branches in New Delhi especially near the mountain sized dumpyards located in the areas like Ghazipur and Wazirabad since these garbage mounds emitts loads of green house gases.
We need this type of plant in every district of the country
Why is this not implemented at mass scale throughout the country?
Money
Vested interests
Public authorities don’t generally think about such projects which improve public lives. They are busy pocketing taxpayer money. The rarity of such projects is the proof.
@@rajatlotw Public authorities work on what Public want them to work on.
Didn't u watch the video??
this channel needs to go international!! the world needs this.
Congratulations from Brazil 👏👏👏🇧🇷
This method should be replicated in all the districts of India... Pollution, Plastic Waste & foul Smell is increasing day by day...
Hope State Govt's will replicate this model..
Indore Is only one city to be developed in technology wise.
Indore municipal corporation has to come forward share technology to various municipal corporation in India, so there will Over all development in country.
Other municipalities should come forward and learn from Indore. It is not Indore's responsibility to improve other districts.
@@dreadfulbodyguard7288 I'm of the opinion that both Indore Corporation and other Metro corporations need to show equal interest in incorporating the demonstrated technologies of Indore.
Awesome!! How many other cities have such facility?? Let's make this a pan India phenomena..
Every city needs one of these. Those with population is above a million desperately needs them.
every state in bharat should do this type of bio CNG plant (on medium and large scale)
Everybody watching this video, write a email to your municipal corporation; tagging MLA and MP and ask them to implement similar system in your municipality. Also, ask your friends, social circle to do. If required, go visit your MP and ask him to implement this system.
Authorities will work on this only if they see public demand for it.
CNG bus transport which comes from Waste..! That's awesome
I think bio CNG is better than hydrogen in many respects.😊
What Indore think today, India thinks tomorrow.
Easily one of the best videos on YT.
Excellent case study on waste management and promoting a circular economy
Man this needs to be implemented in all the cities of India....
It's an eye opener, for other city municipality corporations..., Why other's can't act.
Hope the numbers add up and this is as great as it seems. Good luck with the project!
Chennai had this long back near Koyambedu market. It failed. Hope this succeed in long run.
The real positive impact will come if they use it to extract methane from human excreta collected by sewage departments in every city. The remaining solids left behind after gas expulsion can be mixed with other organic waste to form fertilizer. This will make the gas available in huge volumes for cooking gas or CNG use.
Indore 🇮🇳❤️
Except for few people no one is intrested in environment and ecosystem. Because it's not visible immediately but affects are certain. So only limitations of human activities can prevent emissions.
This was an excellent video. A lot of information. Very nice. I hope a lot of people will watch this and improve their understanding about the world.
Great Initiative by Indian Government.
All major cities which gets huge pile of organic wastes and big dairy farms like Amul can implement Bio-CNG to reduce fossil fuel usage. Less pollution and it's GDP for India.
This should be at least part of all the smart cities.
Good work, hope implement across country
Interesting, something we need here eSpeCially for the die hard ICE powered fanatics . ! Including me with my classic bikes .
Title little misleading, no challenges and issues discussed in the video??? From watching the video, many doubts arised about effectiveness...
Why is it not replicated on large scale in other district's and cities of MP ?
Who is there to share the knowledge ?
I hope MCD in Delhi, which is now controlled by AAP, learns from this and implements it there.
Why not implement this in most cities . Looks like Win Win situation
You are doing a great job guys.
We are setting up this typ plant in each tehsil wich will run on napier Grass instead of municipal waste. More than 850 tehsils are covered....
Interested candidates can contact.
We are Providing funding, technology and machinary support interested person will have to arrange the land of 10 acre and necessary permissions, initial investment
Hi, I am planning to start a CBG plant. Please share your contact number to discuss.
Your contact number sir
Thank you
i love your work.....in love with your magzine.❤
I wish my city has been like this, here people don't care about such things 🥲
Jesa Indore h wesa pura desh saaf kyu nhi ho skta ??
Can this same technique be used to fill CNG gas or LPG gas for cooking if so this could solve some of the problems and for a very lesser rate like rs 400 for house gas cylinders compared to what is sold in the open market
💐❤️Very very Good . We need one for our city Coimbatore .
This should be done in every India's city which has population over 1lac
Every major city, every state ..this type of plant needs more R&D.. investment and promotion
CNG filling station will increase
Because of my car is 50 min in a station this the biggest disadvantage of CNG......
So every Bio-CNG plant becomes India's first Bio-CNG plant? I think there are more than 250 + plants across India at this point.
Yes implement in DELHI NCR PLZ
AAP GOVT DO IT
Plz make more videos on BioCNG Plants
Ahmedabad's dumping ground has become a big mountain of trash, i dont know what amc is doing in one of the richest cities of india, the standards are so low, they should learn from Indore.
There are many bio CNG plants even before this plant in India
Can you cite some examples?
@@olugbengaezekiel8468 In Sweden its common. We have 281 plants to produce Bio-CNG
Even Indore had small capacity plant at vegetable market 500 m from where I live.
But this New 🆕 plant is for #City's wet Waste (not just vegetable market), which is tricky because you have to segregate waste at source of origin @House , every house 🏡
Hotels, restaurants, Garbage bins along the road.
Imagine if this is used in all tier 1 cities
Thank You for this informative video.
Wow... Excellent ✔️🙏
Great beginning now this is called make in india ......
So Bio CNG and Bio CBG is different or same
Hard to tell if this is the right platform for this. But ill try anyways as this is still considered business. Given the present conditions, is it better to invest
into Real Estates or into Stocks? Which would yield better output.
Save Our Planet
Where are the challenges mentioned?
Awesome
Need more setups like this.
Soul of all these process is source segregation of solid waste
The narrator intentionally pronunced the name of company wrong to sound more British.
The name is अवंतिका. It is not अवांतिका .
Kya plant visit kar sakta hu
I think city transport should be electric indore muncipal corporation should provide this cng to state transport
Indore's biodegradable #Wet waste #quality is better than Europe's.
For Bio methanation plant you need top quality waste in which there is barely any mixing of Non biodegradable waste. (As per company which built this plant said, that's why they were interested in more plants in other cities but wanted assured quality waste for it, which others (Local Bodies) failed to provide).
Quite informative.
Great initiative👍🏼
I live in Indore & foul odor is reduced by atleast 90% in this area, it works!!! The only "inconvenience" is that city authority forces us to separate waste at home using 2 dustbin. This is not always possible because people have more important things to do and keeping 2 dustbin everywhere is not possible, lets say car dustbin, study room dustbin, places that rarely see other kind of waste...etc. It requires cleaning (emptying) 2 dustbins each time & doubles the work, also will you turn on the lights in dark sleep (eye hurting) just to throw trash? & many more.... sorting of waste should be done by robots or workers, or why can't we simply allow waste to decompose by bacteria then pick-up non biodegeradable waste...some other waste management strategy?...Two dustbins are an inconvenience single dustbin better...
If we have true sense of giving to the society, environment we can do.Our world,Our INDIA so dont be hesitant to do.If u can do ur are great sons or daughters of India.Hope Chennai City can set a bio cng plant like this and surely i will segregate the waste.
Such an inconvenience, your life is so hard man. They are forcing you to segregate the waste that you yourself generate, how rude of them.
@@kap. bro, your sarcasm is wasted on this self-centred nit.
It's your waste, if you do segregate it immediately at source, everything is smooth afterwards.
Very interesting 🤔
How can I buy west manuare
👍👍
Waste to energy needs govt support
The video says there are challenges and then doesn't specify what is the issue 😂😂
The headline had the word "challenges" but actual content did not tell of any! First it needs a big chunk of peri urban land that is precious for real estate mafia.
Then, there is a social taboo in working with garbage. Our culture does not respect sweepers or scavengers.
Also, people in a bigger city cannot be persuaded to sort their dry, wet and plastic wastes at source. No municipal corporation has such manpower or resources.
Finally, the currently available technology does not make such plants commercially viable.
I want developed india by 2100🙏🙏🙏🙏
Mumbai please implement this and earn crores😂😂😂😂😂😂
Y dont indore reduce CNG price in city ...therby make all cars / vehicles to CNG ...long term effect is u save city from petrol and diseal burning
I have seen in vedio some labour workings without anything safety Covers.
My English poor but im trying to writes.
Not the first in India for sure. I was a part of commissionning team for a large scale compressed BioCNG plant in Rajasthan, 10 years ago. In 2012
Tell me more about your journey. We can all learn from that,.
❤❤❤
#mamtabanejee #tmc do something for Calcutta. Save the dying city. It's becoming synonymous with everything wrong with urban planning, pollution and filth
👍
❤
Daily how much kgs cng produces from this plant ?
14 ton
14,000 kg -17,000 kg (varies according to season, climatic conditions).
The term Bio CNG is wrong. while it is no more CNG. It should be CBG Compressed Bio Gas.
Compressed #Natural Gas - Methane 95% + Hydro carbons.
#Bio gas - Mix of Methane + Not Hydrocarbons - CO2 + Hydrogen sulphide + Nitrogen & compounds + CO etc
(#Indore Plant removes non hydrocarbons like CO2 etc) so it becomes Bio - CNG(Bio -Methane)
LPG - Butane + Propane (heavier Hydro carbons).
3:03
Quintillion and quintillion dollars business in bio cng
Only BJP govt can think of such engineering based solutions to fight pollution problem. We need this in Delhi but sadly the AAP govt is only interested in doing odd even rule which is not the permanent solution.
Aka CBG?
No.
Bio gas is mix of Hydrocarbons and non hydrocarbons.
Natural gas is 95% methane. It's bio originated methane (natural gas) this bio methane.
This video has been "very strangely..." put together! Far too much time focussing on the negatives. This could have started with, "This forest is where a landfill used to be... instead this has been replaced with this Bio CNG plant, which recycles the landfill waste and produces gas to power buses." Then you could have spoken of the benefits to health, and admitted that there are still problems remaining?
Why can't this plant be set up in every State or district. This will cut down oil imports and stop the middle eastern terror.
Can you explain why the air quality of bihar is getting worsen day by day ...
I'm not getting even why Saharsa like town is in the list of top polluted cities of the country
👌🙂
मोदी हैं तो मुमकिन है
Modiji is only doing the initiatives mainly in Ahmedabad or in gujrat regions , this was done by mp government and Indore munciple corporation
Already in Punjab how can it be first
🤔😇
There is Already a smaller one in Indore, but it is fed Vegetable market waste.
This New 🆕 one is fed City wet Waste. Both are different.
Why you people forcefully add poor kids in video. Let me guess, it is just for sympathy.
