With the recent arrival of It Chapter 2 in theatres, fans everywhere seem to have even more questions about the origins of the notorious Pennywise The Dancing Clown! While some of us prefer to think of monstrous clown creatures as little as possible, others have delved deep in order to uncover the fascinating backstory of one of our most frightening villains. If you belong to that second camp, we’ve done some serious digging and have come up with some answers about the origin of Pennywise that might just have you running to the movies, or in the opposite direction.
For starters, It has actually been hanging around Earth causing mayhem for upwards of thousands of years, even millions! We know that It came to Earth from another universe and landed in what would later become the town of Derry, Maine. There, he first encountered the First Nations Shokopiwa peoples, and it is believed that it is with them that his habit of eating children for a year and then chillaxing for twenty seven began to form. We know that they tried to defeat him but failed, and then moved to the outskirts of Derry to get away from his evil behaviour. But why does It seem to have to stick to Derry if he is so powerful? Well some believe that he and the town are actually tied together on a much deeper level, that It’s wellbeing is dependant on that of the town. You think I care what some random fanboy thinks... I read the book... and what's better, I remember it well.... it's just something Stephen King made up in his head.

@@celess21 After I read the book further and more time passed, I realized it was more an alien.... just one as sadistic as Satan.
Apparently Pennywise came from something called the Matroverse (probs got the name wrong) which is a whole other universe. Pennywise's only rival of equal strength is a giant turtle. The turtle represents creation and Pennywise represents destruction.
Pennywise apparently crashlanded on earth underneath what is now Derry Maine. The first settlers found Pennywise and he went on a feeding frenzy. Then he needed to hibernate for 27 years, then he woke up and repeat.
It is theorized that Pennywise never leaves Derry Maine as it is where he first crash landed and he cannot leave his home.
Pennywise adapted his look throughout the ages as the world evolved, he would take what is popular and twist it. During the time when the circus was popular he most likely adapted to the form of a clown and from the reaction it drew from the children probably made it his favourite.

Another theory is that Pennywise is an entity from the Todash Darkness. To give an idea of what the Darkness is like, the creatures in the movie The Mist are where they were from and the mist itself is a representation of Todash. And the creatures in the movie were the equivalent of local wildlife. You can use Todash as a 'shortcut' for traveling, but it's hideously dangerous unless you know exactly what you're doing.
Also, It wasn't unique, it was a member of a 'species' called Glamours.

It doesn't prefer kids because they're easy to catch, but because they have a better imagination making them more scared than adults, or other creatures, which is why he prefers earth.
Also, Pennywise makes itself unnoticeable and invisible to adults so it's a lot easier to catch the kids.

B Charron The dark tower series was first started off in 1982. It’s the book series that has an explanation for where It originated from.

The deadlights is, I think, his main form from his original universe. Where there is no real physical form, which is why he said that humans will never be able to understand what he truly is. Our brains, and current knowledge of physics/science is nowhere near the level needed to understand "It's" properties. (Side note: his arch enemy is a giant world turtle like in the neverending story)
Interesting fact, all of Steven Kong’s books take place in the same universe and some say that they’re also in the universe of Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time”

I don't understand why the movie made no real attempt at his origins, because that's the one part that makes him truly freaking horrifying.
According to the director there will be a supercut edition of the movie when it becomes available on DVD. In his own words the movie is almost 5 hours long with the uncut scenes, including more about the deadlights and the backstory of Pennywise from the book. He also says there will be about 2 hours worth of bonus material
Because theres just so much, just a lot of odd detail. We got Pennywise the eldritch destroyer god, his kinder turtle god brother and then their all powerful god quasi dad. Plus all the weird metaphysical stuff. There was just no way to fit it all in.
David B read the book... most of King’s books never explain the origins of his monsters...because monsters don’t need an origin.

Yes from the book I understand that billions of years ago it broke through a dimensional rift in the sky and landed in what was to be Derry Maine it is suspected to come from a monster dimension that is mentioned in other Stephen King books and it is trapped within the boundary of Derry due to its true form stuck underground where the final battle takes place

Pennywise isn't a physcial being, he's a spiritual being who has authority over matter, because matter is temporal, but the spirit is eternal, he's not bound by our Laws, and can even trangress them, and manipulate matter. Pennywise can shapeshift, transform reality, create illusions, Satan too, in the book of Jasher, transforms into 2 different people to fool Abraham, and Isaac, and he even transforms into a swamp, and Isaac almost drowned, but Abraham rebuked Satan, and the swamp disapeared, and their clothes became dry again. Pennywise IS Lucifer.

He comes from the macroverse, basically a lovecraft lookalike universe (King was basically Lovecraft apprentice). In that universe he is not the only God like entity, he acrually says that there is a Turtle god who can actually kill him.

Even if you're only going by the movies, the 1990 version covered why IT haunts Derry - it's home is in the caverns beneath the town, and Derry is it's "territory"... its hunting grounds.
